Elis Gruffydd and the Welsh Historical Tradition

    No full text
Elis Gruffydd’s Cronicl is the longest piece of original prose ever written in the Welsh language, and the first example of writing by a Welsh author for a Welsh audience produced on the Continent. In 2018, Elis’s Cronicl was added to the prestigious UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register, one of only five such recognitions in Wales, giving the Cronicl globally recognized status. Despite this, Elis’s Cronicl is understudied, a “forgotten gem” most of which has never been transcribed, translated, or published in book form. Elis lived and wrote in the British military center and staple port, Calais, which attracted a variety of nationalities, cultures, publishers, and independent thinkers. Elis is the first known Welshman to convert to Protestantism and write about his experience. He gives an eyewitness account of important events like the Field of the Cloth of Gold, the coronation of Anne Boleyn, and hearings at the Star Chamber. Most significant to me, however, is that he used the Welsh language for this document, which allowed him to create a document for the preservation of his native culture and language. Unlike his contemporary chroniclers, Elis did not write for a patron or monarch. The first-person insight of a soldier in the field is rare, especially in this period. Few scholars have examined this document, and the text has not been edited or translated in full, meaning access is greatly reduced. Only small portions of the Cronicl have ever been analyzed or published. This text, particularly the Tudor portion, is understudied, and my research provides a new historical reading of a source that has much left to reveal

The author spent the period from March 22 to July 10, 1987, at the GAMMA 10 tandem-mirror experiment at the University of Tsukuba in Tsukuba, Japan. The purpose of this extended trip was to install on GAMMA 10 one of the end-loss-ion spectrometers (ELIS) used on TMX-U (Tandem Mirror Experiment-Upgrade) at LLNL and to make plasma measurements there with this diagnostic instrument. This report discusses the considerable planning and preparations that preceded the trip, the actual experience with the ELIS equipment at GAMMA 10, data and results obtained while the author was there, GAMMA 10 experimental procedures, the scientific and technical support during the stay, and some final comments and suggestions concerning an international exchange such as this one. The data acquired on GAMMA 10 while there, along with earlier data, present an encouraging picture of a plasma in a thermal-barrier mode in a tandem-mirror, magnetic-fusion machine. 6 refs

The diffusion and influence of theoretical models of information behaviour : the case of Savolainen's ELIS model

To ascertain the diffusion and influence of Savolainen's ELIS model and its use as a theoretical and/or methodological basis for research. A context citation analysis was made of the work where this researcher published his model. Analysis covered the year of publication, the type of work and the subject-matter of the citing documents concerned. In-context citations were analysed for their frequency in each citing text, style, location and content cited. The ELIS model received 18.5 cites/year. 20.2% of them corresponded to papers published in journals in other areas, mainly computer science. The average of cites per paper was 1.8; 64.5% of the citing works cited them only once. 60% of the cites were considered essential. Only 13.7% of these cites appear in theory or methods. 37% of the citing documents contained no concept relating to the model. The method used focuses on the most direct context of a cite (sentence or paragraph), but isolates it from the general context (full document, other documents by the author or their social capital). It has however allowed this research issue to be dealt with under laboratory conditions, and revealed nuances hidden by the absolute number of cites. It has become evident that the dissemination and influence of the ELIS model is less that what the total number of cites indicates, and that it has scarcely been incorporated into research design. Despite its popularity, it is not being validated and/or refuted by way of empirical data

The Hirsch spectrum: a novel tool for analysing scientific journals

    No full text
This paper introduces the Hirsch spectrum (h-spectrum) for analyzing the academic reputation of a scientific journal. h-Spectrum is a novel tool based on the Hirsch (h) index. It is easy to construct: considering a specific journal in a specific interval of time, h-spectrum is defined as the distribution representing the h-indexes associated to the authors of the journal articles. This tool allows defining a reference profile of the typical author of a journal, compare different journals within the same scientific field, and provide a rough indication of prestige/reputation of a journal in the scientific community. h-Spectrum can be associated to every journal. Ten specific journals in the Quality Engineering/Quality Management field are analyzed so as to preliminarily investigate the h-spectrum characteristic

The aim of this thesis is to study the neological creations of a semantic field related to the Amazonian context present in the poetry of João de Jesus Paes Loureiro, whose poetic thought dialogues with the myths, beliefs and the native imaginary of that region. Through his style, the author seeks to express a differentiated relationship with the Portuguese language, using neologisms that mark a geographical and cultural location, seeking to subvert the language in a work of craftsmanship that seeks the renewal of the word, transmuting it of its daily use to acquire varied semantic loads, poetizing what the author calls \"mundamazônico\". From the dialogue between the theories of lexical stylistics and formal poetics, in addition to the aesthetic thought of the author himself in his essays, the research collects the lexical inventions of the Amazonian context distributed throughout the literary production of Paes Loureiro, creations that raise questions about the modernization and financial exploration of northern Brazil. The collection of the corpus, therefore, is not intended to be extensive. We seek to analyze only the neologisms that express intimate questions about amazonicity and the regional aspect. The research also seeks to verify how the author\'s style develops a \"river language\", a revealing word for the work of poetry while \"enchanting the language\", as the author points out. The books analyzed for the research were Porantim; Deslendário; Altar em Chamas; Para ler como quem anda nas ruas; As Encantarias; Artesão das águas; O ser aberto; A loba; Cinco palavras à Virgem de Nazaré; Pentacantos; Epístolas e Baladas; Cantigas de Amar e de Amor; e Tarefa all included in volumes I and II of the Obras Reunidas e Água de Fonte, Romanceiro do Quem são eles e Iluminação/Iluminuras, in order to trace the expressive profile that such creations have in order to compose the style of the author

Nejasan učitelj neorealizma: simboli i mitovi u književnosti Cesara Pavesa

This thesis represents a thorough analysis of the life and most significant works of Cesare Pavese, one of the most prominent writers of the Italian post-war generation. The principal theme deals with the symbolism and myths typical of the narratives written by this emblematic author of the Italian Neorealismo. We have identified and outlined the historical and cultural features of the 20th century as well as the evolution of the artist himself. His works are always characterized by symbolism and myths which alienate him from the poetry of the Italian Neorealismo and conceal his thoughts. Pavese is widely regarded as one of the foremost figures of the Italian Neorealismo, an author who marked that period with both his novels and poetry. His literary works are permeated with immense loneliness and ambiguity, revealing at the same time an absolutely innovative prospective of Italian literature. Njegova književna djela su prožeta neizmjernom usamljenošću i dvosmislenošću, time otkrivaju jednu potpuno novu perspektivu talijanske literature u to vrijeme

The diagnosis of evil in Chuck Palahniuk\'s work: the lexicon of the grotesque as a transgressive thread - a sociological stylistic analysis

Haunted: A Novel of Stories was originally published in 2005 by american author Chuck Palahniuk (1962-). The work has a complex narrative structure that parodies the Decameron, by Giovanni Boccaccio, The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, and The 120 days of Sodom, by Marquis de Sade. By emulating the three authors, Palahniuk builds his narrative at the moment and in the context in which we, subjects of contemporaneity, live: guided by a neoliberal capitalist system of consumption. He is an author with a controversial artistic production, but which, in addition to shocking, has a greater purpose, that of: exposing the wound and diagnosing social evil from what he calls Transgressive Fiction. And Haunted would be one of the works that most represents this diagnosis, given its rich thematic diversity. For the analysis of the novel, we opted for the theoretical writings of the Bakhtin Circle, with greater emphasis on his Theory of the novel vol. I (2015), II (2018) and III (2019) since in it the theorist seeks to present a stylistics of the novel, taking it for what it is: a literary genre with a poetic discourse which the researcher must analyze starting from its specificum, since, for the theorist, the novel is an artistically organized social heterodiscourse, and being it as a verbalized whole, it is a pluristylistic, heterodiscursive and heterovocal phenomenon. The objective is to analyze the object in the eyes of a sociological poetics, in which form and content are not separated, since they are undivided in the discourse when it is conceived as a social phenomenon - social in all fields of its life and in all its elements. Under this sociological perspective we seek to demonstrate, at first, how the author-creator builds the discourses within the novel to show that 1) the characters\' discourse is the artistic representation of the discourse of a neoliberalized subject; 2) the voice of the narrator, through indirect and free indirect discourse, fulfills the function of undermining, through parodization, this neoliberal discourse, corroding it from the inside out in an ambivalent way. In a second moment, bearing in mind that transgression is one of the elements of the author\'s artistic production, being present in his theme, in his content and, mainly, in his linguistic structure, we proceed to analyze how the author makes use of the field lexical-semantic scope of the grotesque for specific aesthetic purposes, this lexicon being one of the threads that weave what we call in this research the transgressive veil

Lexicon and social denunciation: an approach to Negrinha tale portuguese language classes

Considering the proficient reader formation in Portuguese Language classes, this study proposed to develop an activities sequence and applies it in a 9th grade class of Second Elementary Teaching, in a State Public School. After that was made an analysis, with the goal to demonstrate how lexical choice conveys the author´s ideology, taking a several times a critical feature and a social denunciation. To this, Monteiro Lobato´s tale Negrinha, was used as a base to a classroom study. The reading practices and developed analysis sought to clarify how some words and expressions get differentiate the characters and their behavior, characterizing them as the dominant and dominated, including in a historical and social context. In this sense, it sought to show how the author Monteiro Lobato took advantage of lexical choice to demonstrate the permanence of the Negrinha´s tale slavery regime ideology, even after the abolition. As a result, it shows that the comprehension of these choices lead the students to develop their reading and writing skills in a critical and reflective way, preparing themselves for further reading, beyond the scholar context

Voices of peripheral resistance: lexicon, discourse and ideology in Rodrigo Ciríaco´s work

Por meio de um tom provocativo e crítico, é criada uma ilusão de realidade que marca a existência e a resistência da periferiaThis thesis presents a study regarding the lexical-discursive-ideological construction of the work of the writer Rodrigo Ciríaco - author of Brazilian Marginal and Peripheral Literature. The research addresses the author\'s lexical selection as a manifestation of his expressiveness, considering his intentionality, experiences and worldview reverberated in literary discourse. In this sense, the purpose is to understand how lexical choices and the composition of lexical-semantic fields are structured in the poems, short stories and mini-stories of the works analyzed - Vendo Pó...esia!, Te Pego Lá Fora, Sem Mágoas and a separate short story \"Um novo brinquedo\". We consider that these works bring the Portuguese language into use in contemporary peripheral literary discourse. Thus, we seek to reflect critically on the use of the Brazilian Portuguese lexicon in its different aspects, as well as on the construction of the literary text in dialogue with the socio-historical context. The research methodology is qualitative, based on lexical-discursive-ideological analysis to verify the lexical patterns used. As a theoretical basis, we used leading researchers in the fields of Lexicology, Semantics, Stylistics, Sociolinguistics, Discourse Analysis, and Contemporary Literature, with a view to composing an unprecedented study that provides and expands reflections on the use of the Portuguese language by the writer Rodrigo Ciríaco. As results of the analyses, we can highlight the formation of expressive lexical-semantic fields, the creation of lexical games, the use of slang, and the presence of orality. The phraseological-discursive constructions and the author\'s ideology for composing the literary text are responsible for its style and expressiveness. Rodrigo Ciríaco\'s characters represent a plurality of peripheral voices and also his alter ego as a peripheral subject, leaving clues of the idealistic teacher who democratizes not only access to literature as an object of reading and enjoyment, but also authorship as an artistic creation. Therefore, the author grants voice and visibility to peripheral subjects through a dialogical relationship with the periphery, in order to reach students, readers, and society in general. Through a provocative and critical tone, an illusion of reality is created that marks the existence and resistance of the peripher
