Method and system for establishing an internet access by using a wireless local area network communication protocol from a mobile client station
A method for establishing an Internet access by using a WLAN protocol from a mobile client station, via an access point to be chosen from a set of identified access points, includes: providing a general database of the identified access points with connection information; requesting Internet access using the protocol, successively moving through browsing through, selecting, associating, authenticating and configuring; establishing the Internet access of the mobile client station via the selected access point. Before and independently of the requesting the Internet access, connection information of at least a portion of the access points of the general database is downloaded into an onboard database of the mobile client station. The browsing through and selecting are carried out based on the downloaded connection information, without soliciting the general database and the identified access points
Car-Fi: Opportunistic V2I by exploiting dual-access Wi-Fi networks
The need for Internet access from moving vehicles has been steadily increasing in the past few years. Solutions that rely on cellular connectivity are becoming impractical to deploy due to technical and economic reasons. Car-Fi proposes an approach that leverages existing home Wi-Fi access points configured in dual-access mode, in order to offload all data traffic from the congested and expensive cellular infrastructure to whatever Wi-Fi network is available. Thanks to an improved scanning algorithm and numerous optimizations to the connection setup, Car-Fi makes downloading large amounts of data from a moving car feasible
Research Infrastructures and Tools for Collaborative Networked Systems Research (Dagstuhl Seminar 24462)
This report presents the program and outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar "Research Infrastructures and Tools for Collaborative Networked Systems Research" (24462). The seminar brought together experts from the network and distributed systems testbed community, scientists who rely on testbeds for their research, and representatives from funding agencies. It focused on bridging the gap between the services provided by large-scale testbed infrastructures and the needs of researchers conducting cutting-edge experiments. Discussions centered on enhancing the value and impact of research infrastructures by improving collaboration, streamlining experiment workflows, and developing testbed-agnostic tools. The goal was to make experimental research more modular, adaptable, and reproducible, ensuring that experiments and evaluation software can be easily modified, extended, and ported across different testbed environments. Key topics included strategies to improve research quality, reproducibility, and reusability, enhance the discovery process, and maximize the efficient use of research infrastructure resources

LERU Roadmap for Research Data
LERU believes that the era of data-driven research has arrived, and acknowledges the potential for making research data open and available for re-use. Building on LERU’s earlier Roadmap to research publications, the new LERU Roadmap for Research Data explores in particular the benefits of making data open and provides a guide for European universities who wish to embark on this exciting and challenging journey. In a series of chapters, the Roadmap charts a course through a number of issues (e.g. advocacy for the benefits/challenges of sharing and re-using research data, technical infrastructures and standards needed to support this move, the likely costs of such developments, the skills and knowledge needed …) and uses a series of Case Studies to illustrate how research-led universities in LERU are currently tackling issues around data management. The Roadmap ends with a series of recommendations which suggest ways in which researchers, LERU universities, support services and the European Commission can make a contribution
