Supervised learning of soliton X-junctions in lithium niobate films on insulator

    No full text
In this Letter, the first implementation, to our knowledge, of X-junctions between photorefractive soliton waveguides in lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) films is reported. The experiments were performed on 8 μm thick films of congru- ent undoped LiNbO3. Compared with bulk crystals, the use of films reduces the soliton formation time, allows more con- trol over the interaction between the injected soliton beams, and opens a route to integration with silicon optoelectronics functions. The created X-junction structures show effective supervised learning, directing the signals propagated inside the soliton waveguides into the output channels highlighted by the control assigned by the external supervisor. Thus, the obtained X-junctions have behaviors analogous to biological neurons

L’industria in epoca preindustriale? Riflessioni su “L’industrie au village” di Catherine Verna

    No full text
The book published by French medievalist Catherine Verna L’industrie au village (2017) raises a double question: on the one hand because it uses the term industry in reference to the Middle Ages, and on the other because it associates the same term with the village, i.e. rurality, whereas medieval industry – at least for those who think it is possible to talk about industry during these times – is traditionally associated with cities rather than the countryside. In the introduction of the book, Verna conducts a historiographical review of the concept of industry, limited to only French medievalists. This paper endeavors a similar review but focused on Italian historiography, illustrating how the concept of industry appears no clearer to Italian medievalists than it does to French ones. In addition, it discusses the definition of industry proposed by Verna – in order to determine whether it is appropriate or not to talk about “industry in the pre-industrial times” – and analyzes what the author means by the expression “industry in the village”. In particular, it pays attention to the concepts of small town and industrial district developed by Verna within her case study (the Pyrenean village of Arles-sur-Tech and the Vallespir localities in the 14th and 15th centuries), i.e. two concepts that constitute valuable interpretive keys for the history of medieval and modern Italy

L'impatto dell'attività tintoria sull'ambiente. Firenze alla fine del Medioevo

    No full text
The author aims to examine and categorize the range of dyeings materials used in the Florentine wool and silk textile industries in the late Middle Ages, focusing mainly on those produced within the regional space in order to evaluate the impact of the Florentine dyeing activity on the natural environment and the productive landscape of the Tuscan countryside. In particular, the author establishes a line of demarcation between cultivated and uncultivated resources in order to verify which constitutes an indication of the level of industrial development of medieval textile production. This further focuses on how the transition from the exploitation of wild resources to the exploitation of cultivated resources could reflect a greater degree of economic integration between the countryside and the city and contribute to the formation of a regional economic space

Emotional Artificial Intelligence: Detecting and Managing Customer Emotions in Automated Customer Service

2019 - 2020Among the distinctive features of the human race are the ability to feel emotions and to be empathetic with others. These features are strictly related to the concept of emotional intelligence (EI). In this thesis, the skills of EI have been explored in the context of automated customer service, to achieve effective customer engagement through the emotional reading of their needs and moods. Contact center operators are often trained to detect different emotional states and connect empathically with customers, to engage them in new commercial offers or solve their main problems both in the presales and post-sales processes. Frontline employees (FLEs) use their empathetic skills to prevent negative emotions and transform complex issues into positive solutions for the customer. Emotional awareness and empathy are important assets in customer relationship management (CRM) to establish the customer’s loyalty and advocacy towards the firm in a logic of value co-creation. Customer service automated systems see artificial intelligence (AI) become part of this scenario with a consequent loss of empathic capacity in the interaction between customers and firms due to an incorrect reading and managing of customer emotions. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate how a customer service AI technology called chatbots affect this interaction and detect customer emotions, expectations, and service quality perceptions effectively. This work develops a new conceptual framework that combines the skills of emotional intelligence (EI) with those of current AI-powered chatbots already operating in many customer service systems. The emotional artificial intelligence (EAI) framework represents a possible way for a chatbot to know when a human agent must intervene to handle a complicated conversation with the customer without a loss of empathic capacity of the firm. .. .. Myth: Europe is in need of a “Finalité Politique”

A finalité politique is at odds with the nature of European integration. There is no end goal, and that is how it ought to be. By definition, the Europe of European integration is a volatile and hybrid institution, a temporary fix. A temporary fix that has to prove itself as an appealing and convincing version of that big post-war Western experiment with capitalism and democracy. Capitalism and democracy the European way, if you wish. Key to its attraction is that is never set in definite form, nor believes in such a thing

Exposure-Tolerant Imaging Solution forCultural Heritage Monitoring

    No full text
This paper describes a simple and cheap solution specifically designed for monitoring the degradation of thin coatings employed for metal protection. The proposed solution employs a commercial photocamera and a frequency-domain-based approach that is capable of highlighting the surface uniformity changes due to initial corrosion. Even though the proposed solution is specifically designed to monitor the long-time performance of protective coatings employed for the restoration of silver artifacts, it can be successfully used also for assessing the conservation state of other ancient metallic works of art. The proposed solution is made tolerant to exposure changes by using a procedure for sensor nonlinearity identification and correction, does not require a precise lighting control, and employs only free open-source software, so that its overall cost is very low and can be used also by not specifically trained operator
