Essential dimension of cubics
No full textIn this paper, we compute the essential dimension of the functor of cubics in three variables up to linear changes of coordinates when the base field has characteristic different from 2 and 3. For this, we use canonical pencils of cubics, Galois descent techniques, and the basic material on essential dimension developed in [G. Berhuy, G. Favi, Doc. Math. 8 (2003) 279–330] which is based on Merkurjev's notes [Essential dimension, 1999]

No full textL'autore, sulla base di Theoph. Par. 2.1.14, in tema di occupazione dei favi prodotti dalle api e almeno per quanto concerne l'età giustinianea, sostiene la tesi per cui il proprietario del fondo, una volta proibito in generale l'ingresso nel proprio terreno, impedisce a chiunque l'acquisto per occupazione dei favi medesimi, di cui pertanto, in tal caso, si può impadronire egli solo. Si tratterebbe dell'unico caso in cui il trasgressore del divieto d'ingresso non fa proprio l'oggetto di apprensione e ciò sarebbe dovuto alla particolare natura dei favi, che non sono cose semoventi come tutti gli altri oggetti di occupazione venatoria di cui si occupano le fonti giuridiche romane.

No full textEpicarmo (ca. 530–440 a.C.) è il primo poeta comico della letteratura greca a noi noto. L’influenza della sua opera nel mondo antico non fu però limitata al solo ambito drammatico. Per via della presenza di temi morali, discussioni linguistiche e parodia filosofica all’interno delle sue commedie, dopo la sua morte a Epicarmo fu attribuita un’effettiva competenza in tali ambiti, con la conseguenza che un numero di sentenze e di trattati in versi di argomento morale, filosofico e scientifico, noti come scritti pseudo-epicarmei, furono redatti da altri autori allo scopo di dare corpo e mettere in circolazione le dottrine che si facevano risalire a Epicarmo. In questo volume vengono raccolti e discussi i riscontri per la presenza di argomenti seri offerti dai frammenti delle commedie di Epicarmo, quindi si fornisce uno studio analitico dei frammenti degli scritti pseudo-epicarmei e dei frammenti ex Alcimo; di questi ultimi si accoglie l’interpretazione quali esempi di parodia filosofica autenticamente epicarmei. Tutti questi materiali sono presentati con un testo rivisto criticamente e con un dettagliato commento filologico ed esegetico

No full textIt is generally believed that two passages in Diomedes and ps.-Probus testify to the existence of a theatre in Syracuse at the time of the Deinomenid tyrants, Hiero and Gelo. It is, however, more likely that the Hiero and Gelo of these grammatical sources are to be identified with the third-century tyrants Hiero II and Gelo II. Moreover, the abovementioned passages belong to a group of testimonia on the origins of bucolic poetry, and in the same vein they manipulate both mythological and historical material in order to achieve their primary goal, without aiming for an historically verifiable reconstruction
Hypothermic machine perfusion in kidney transplantation: back to the future?
No full textStatic cold storage is currently the most used method of organ preservation worldwide. However, cutting edge technology and dramatic changes in the donor pattern have lately renewed the interest toward hypothermic machine perfusion. Marginal and cardiac death donors show higher rates of primary non function and delayed graft function compared to standard criteria donors. In this setting, machine perfusion may offer several theoretical advantages such as improved organ preservation, continuous graft evaluation, and ex-vivo conditioning of the graft before implantation. These topics have been recently reassessed by several studies. In particular, perfusion characteristics (renal resistance) and perfusate biomarker concentrations (lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, heart-type fatty acid binding protein, and IL-18) during machine preservation, proved to be reliable tools to rule out graft viability and predict outcomes after transplantation. Treatment strategies acting on tissue repair, cell metabolism, and allorecognition pathway are also under investigation with promising results. Machine perfusion has finally shown its real potential however, stronger evidences and updated cost-effectiveness analysis are needed to fully support its role for the next future

Differently from what is generally believed, it is very unlikely that a group of non-Athenian women accompanying Lampitò, the Boeotian, and the Corinthian enters the orchestra following two other groups of Athenian women, which in turn form the chorus. On this new reconstruction, which is more faithful to the text of the play, a number of otherwise puzzling details fall into place
