A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Mechanical characterization and interfacial enzymatic activity of AISI 316L stainless steel after surface nanocrystallization
Shot peening is a well-known surface severe plastic deformation treatment widely used for improving the mechanical performance of metallic materials. It was revealed that applying severe shot peening, which is characterized by high kinetic energy, has an effective role in surface nanocrystallization of metallic materials. In this study, firstly the effects of different shot peening treatments using conventional and severe parameters were investigated on the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of the 316L stainless steel. Microstructural analyses and measurements of grain size, microhardness, residual stresses, surface roughness, surface wettability as well as fatigue tests were performed. Then for the first time, the interfacial enzymatic activity of Laccase multicopper oxidoreductase enzyme was investigated on the nanostructured and rough surface of the shot peened samples. The surface nanostructured 316L samples exhibited considerable improvement in terms of mechanical properties and fatigue behavior and also showed increased enzymatic activity. These results can promote the application of surface nanocrystallized samples for biochemical and biomedical applications
New Era, New Criteria for City Imaging
Despite many dramatic changes in last fifty years, urban designers still try to measure "city imaging" with same criteria as was described by Kevin Lynch in his landmark volumes. However, city imaging increasingly is supplemented by exposure to recent progresses in communication infrastructures. It seems that once again we need to re-ontologize concepts of city imaging for twenty-first century as his ideas were theoretically created when digital evolution was not such widely affected our world. This paper aims to identify effects of these new digital actors on city imaging. Consequently, we propose that with emergence of Softerial Era and infospherization of almost everything, another kind of landmarks have been evolved (linkmarks) which are highly referenced to a self and relative to his destination and necessities in real-time. Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
An Evaluative Review of Mondly: A Mobile Language Learning Application
[EN] Mobile-Assisted Language Learning is a thriving research area in the field of Second Language Acquisition. Hand-held devices such as smartphones are increasingly and widely being used for second language teaching and learning purposes nowadays. With the great variety of language learning applications entering a competitive market comes a need for studies to evaluate these applications critically so that teachers and learners can choose wisely. The present study aims to evaluate a language learning application called Mondly through a framework proposed by Reinders and Pegrum (2016). The evaluation was carried out by six experienced English language instructors. Modelling the potential distribution of the Bridled Skink, Trachylepis vittata (Olivier, 1804), in the Middle East
The Bridled Skink, Trachylepis vittata, is widespread in the Middle East and eastern coastal Mediterranean areas and inhabits foothills throughout the arid regions of the Middle East. With the help of more than 146 distribution records from Iran, Turkey, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Egypt, Lebanon and Libya, we analysed the influence of climate on the distribution pattern. According to the Maximum Entropy model, the most influential factors that determined T. vittata distribution are: precipitation of coldest quarter, Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and precipitation in the warmest quarter. The model suggests that the western slopes of the Zagros Mountains in Iran and slopes in the southern regions of Anatolia around the Mediterranean Sea are suitable for this species. The species is associated with areas with intermediate NDVI (150-180) (a measure of primary productivity), high winter precipitation (>300 14;mm) and dry summer (<50mm). The association with rainy winter limits the presence of the species in lowlands. The Zagros Mountains may act as a biogeographic barrier that limits the species dispersal eastward, because of their scarce precipitation
Dissipative Range Scaling of Higher Order Structure Functions for Velocity and Passive Scalars
Differently to Kolmogorov's second similarity hypothesis, we find that the 2n-th order velocity and scalar structure functions scale with n-th order moment of the energy dissipation and the scalar dissipation, respectively. The origins of this scaling are analyzed by the transport equations of the fourth order velocity and scalar increment moments and by direct numerical simulations
