Computational understanding of image memorability
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2015.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. In this thesis we investigate the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect image memorability. First, we find that intrinsic differences in memorability exist at a finer-grained scale than previously documented. Moreover, we demonstrate high consistency across participant populations and experiments. We show how these findings generalize to an applied visual modality - information visualizations. We separately find that intrinsic differences are already present shortly after encoding and remain apparent over time. Second, we consider two extrinsic factors: image context and observer behavior. We measure the effects of image context (the set of images from which the experimental sequence is sampled) on memorability. Building on prior findings that images that are distinct with respect to their context are better remembered, we propose an information-theoretic model of image distinctiveness. Our model can predict how changes in context change the memorability of natural images using automatically computed image features. Our results are presented on a large dataset of indoor and outdoor scene categories. We also measure the effects of observer behavior on memorability, on a trial-bytrial basis. Specifically, our proposed computational model can use an observer's eye movements on an image to predict whether or not the image will be later remembered. Apart from eye movements, we also show how 2 additional physiological measurements - pupil dilations and blink rates - can be predictive of image memorability, without the need for overt responses. Together, by considering both intrinsic and extrinsic effects on memorability, we arrive at a more complete model of image memorability than previously available.by Zoya Bylinskii.S.M
Computational perception for multi-modal document understanding
Thesis: Ph. D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2018.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 171-192).Multimodal documents occur in a variety of forms, as graphs in technical reports, diagrams in textbooks, and graphic designs in bulletins. Humans can efficiently process the visual and textual information contained within to make decisions on topics including business, healthcare, and science. Building the computational tools to understand multimodal documents can have important applications for web search, information retrieval, captioning and summarization, and automated design. This thesis makes contributions on two fronts: (i) to the development of data collection methods for measuring how humans perceive multimodal documents (i.e., where they look, what they find important), and (ii) to the development of computer vision tools for automatically parsing and making predictions about multimodal documents (i.e., the subject matter they are about). Specifically, the crowdsourced attention data captured from our novel user interfaces is used to train neural network models to predict where people look in graphic designs and information visualizations, with demonstrated applications to thumbnailing, design retargeting, and interactive feedback within graphic design tools. Separately, our models for detecting visual elements and parsing text elements in infographics (information graphics) are used for topic prediction and to present a system for automatic summarization. This thesis makes contributions at the interface of human and computer vision, with applications to human-computer interfaces and design.by Zoya Bylinskii.Ph. D

The Fluidity of Iranian-Armenian Identity in Zoya Pirzad’s Things Left Unsaid
In Things Left Unsaid, Zoya Pirzad creates characters that invalidate the concept of a unified and coherent identity. Pirzad arms these characters with the ability to reshape their selves and emerge as new subjects—all as a result of integration in an Iranian cultural system. Clarice Ayvazian, Pirzad’s Iranian-Armenian female protagonist, demonstrates a full range of diverse characters. Clarice represents an incoherent subject with clashing identities that pull her in different directions. Some of Clarice’s concerns are gender-specific, while others are culture-specific. Since Clarice is both the narrator and the protagonist, and the story is narrated in the first person, there can arguably be an association between the narrator, Clarice, and the author. After all, Pirzad determines Clarice’s behavior, language, and characteristics. It is Pirzad who created a distinct linguistic and syntactic structure for the novel to represent Clarice’s inner predicament with maintaining her Armenian identity and her hesitations about assimilating within the Iranian Muslim community through Parvin Nurollahi’s invitation. Clarice’s struggles are suggestive of Pirzad’s endeavors in reconciling the two sides of her identity and negotiating her Armenian self through writing in Persian

ABSTRACT
The buying decision-making process for everyone is basically
the same, but the decision-making process cannot be separated from
prices such as money, time, cognitive activity, behavioral effort, value
and pricing. Consumer satisfaction that has no limits, is used by hijab
manufacturers to create hijabs that suit the wishes and needs of
consumers. Efforts that need to be made by companies to survive and
win business competition is to understand consumer behavior that will
influence consumer purchasing decisions. The purpose of this study
was to determine the effect of price, product diversity, and product
quality on purchasing decisions which were analyzed partially,
simultaneously, r determination, and Islamic economic perspective.
The type of research used by the author is field research, which
is a field research that is directly carried out in the field or to
respondents. The associative research that is intended in this study is
whether there is a positive and significant influence between Price,
Diversity of Models, and Product Quality on Zoya Jilbab purchasing
decisions.
Based on the results of the statistical test, it shows that there is a
positive relationship between the price variables, product diversity,
and product quality on purchasing decisions with the highest
regression coefficient value being the price variable and the lowest
regression coefficient being the product quality variable. These results
indicate that each variable in the marketing mix, price, product
diversity, and product quality has a significant influence. The size of a
significant value greatly affects the dependent variable, the greater the
value of a significance, the stronger the influence on the dependent
variable. According to the results of observations and interviews with
the ZOYA Brand Hijab Industry, especially in Sukarame District,
Bandar Lampung, they have implemented Islamic principles which
are clarified by the statement, a). The principle of truth and honesty,
b). The principle of trust or responsibility, and c). The principle of
justice.

SUBJECTIVITY OF THE CHILD IN INTERACTION WITH SOCIETY AS A CONDITION OF THE PERSONALITY’S SUCCESS IN LIFE
The article is related to the concept of subjectivity; features of formation of a subject position in childhood are determined; the idea is substantiated that implementation of the child’s subjectivity in relationships with the society is an essential condition for the personal success in life. The author reveals the strategies of formation of social subjectivity through the development of social interest, social intelligence and social leadership skills. The possibilities of social hardening in implementation of a subject position of the child are demonstrated
Gate Set Tomography on the Nitrogen-Vacancy Center
In this thesis, gate set tomography (GST) has been conducted on the nitrogen vacancy center (NV). Gate set tomography is a protocol for characterization of logic operations (gates) on quantum computing processors. The NV’s electron served as a qubit. The quantum circuits were run both experimentally as well as on an NV-simulator. GST is different from its predecessors in the sense that it estimates all aspects of the processor simultaneously, without assuming any of its parts to be ideal. However, it does assume that the gates are Markovian. This allows to analyse the gate errors more precisely via their error generators. In addition to this, the diamond norm and a measure of the amount of model violation were used to examine the results. The electron qubit can couple to the nearby nitrogen nucleus, which can cause non-Markovian dynamics. The nitrogen nucleus (𝑆 = 1) can be initialised using nuclear spin polarization. The effects of different initialisation procedures on GST’s results wereresearched. Furthermore, a dynamical decoupling XY-4 echo sequence could be employed to protect the quantum state of the qubit. How the presence of the echo affected the estimated gates and their errors was probed. It was discovered that the echo was extremely good at decreasing the amount of model violation, most likely by preventing the electron from coupling to the nitrogen, which can lead to non-Markovian dynamics. Without the echo, GST’s estimates were satisfactory only if the nitrogen nucleus was initialised with a high enough fidelity, at least 0.95. Another topic for further research would be to perform GST on the electron and the nitrogen system, by modelling the nitrogen nucleus asa qutrit.Applied Mathematics | Applied Physic
