Catalogue of the late Pleistocene-Holocene fossil mammalian collection from "Canale delle Acque Alte (Canale Mussolini)" (Natural History Museum, University of Pisa). The catalogue of the paleontological mammalian collection of "Canale delle Acque Alte (Canale Mussolini)" (Agro Pontino, Latium) stored at the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa is presented. Besides the mammal remains (456 specimens), the collection includes 3 fossil wood fragments and 27 molluscs (gastropods and bivalves). The present catalogue also includes the description of material referred to newly determined taxa. For each recognized taxon, the collection number(s), the description of the specimen(s), and the stratigraphic provenance (when available) are herein reported

The upgraded catalogue of the paleontological collection of «Grotta Cucigliana» (Monte Pisano, Italy) is presented. The recovery of the material permitted to discover specimens that were previously considered dispersed. The catalogue includes all the determined species of the paleontological collection of Cucigliana (920 specimens). For each taxon, the collection number, the description of the specimen and the number of specimens (in parentheses) are reported

The classification of the fossil mammalian remains from the "Canale delle Acque Alte" collection is here revised. The stratigraphical provenance of the fossil material has now been reconstructed based on paleontological and sedimentological evidence derived from analyzes of the faunal assemblage and the sediment residue that specimens still preserve within bone cavities. Many species such as Hippopotamus amphibius, Dama dama dama, Megaloceros giganteus, Ursus spelaeus, Vulpes vulpes, Bos taurus longifrons and Capra hircus are recognized for the first time within the material sampled from this locality. The data obtained allowed assessment of the relative abundance of taxa based on calculation of the minimum number of individuals present. Hypotheses regarding the environmental conditions under which the fauna lived are also proposed based on the results and the ecology of the species identified. The fauna is attributed to a time interval between the end of the MIS 5a and MIS 3, while the specimens within the topmost level are Holocene in age

Catalogue of the Late Pleistocene fossil mammalian collection from "Grotta Parignana" (Natural History Museum, University of Pisa). The upgraded catalogue of the paleontological collection of "Grotta Parignana" (Monte Pisano, Italy) is presented. The recovery of the material and the discovery of isolated tags referred to the old Canavari inventory permitted to re-associate some tags to the corresponding specimens. The catalogue includes all the determined species stored at the Natural History Museum and the description of the specimens stored at the Department of Archaeological Sciences of the University of Pisa. For each taxon, the collection number, the description of the specimen and the number of specimens (in parentheses) are reported

Late Pleistocene mammals from Grotta Cucigliana (Monte Pisano, Italy)

The study of the fossil mammals from the «Grotta Cucigliana» collection is here updated. The standard taphonomic parameters NISP, MNE and MNI were established to evaluate the relative frequencies of the taxa. Hypotheses regarding the environmental conditions under which the fauna lived are also proposed on the basis of the results and the ecology of the species identified. Mammals are dominated by Crocuta crocuta spelaea and Cervus elaphus but the presence of Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, Equus ferus, Bos primigenius, Rupicapra rupicapra and Dama dama is also significant. The study permits to hypothesize the occurrence of two faunal assemblages (Cucigliana A and B). The biochronological correlations herein proposed indicates that the Cucigliana A assemblage should be referred to the end of the MIS 5a or the beginning of MIS 4, and Cucigliana B to the beginning of the MIS 3

Late Pleistocene mammals from «Grotta Parignana» (Monte Pisano, Italy): Biochronological implications

The classification of the fossil mammalian remains from «Grotta Parignana» is updated. Of the many taxa represented in the sample, some have never before been reported. These include Felis silvestris and Cricetus sp. Basic information allowed to assess the minimum number of individuals and to make assumptions on the environmental conditions under which the fauna lived. The study permits to hypothesize the occurrence of two faunal assemblages (Parignana A and B). A comparison of the Parignana fauna with several other past mammal associations from central Italy indicates that it should be dated to an interval spanning the end of the MIS 5a or the beginning of MIS 4 (Parignana A) and the MIS 3 (Parignana B)

This paper describes the zoological specimens collected by Giuseppe Raddi during the Franco-Tuscan expedition to Egypt (1828–1829) held in the collection of the Museo di Storia Naturale dell’Università di Pisa. Twenty-two specimens exist, including four amphibians preserved in alcohol, and 18 taxidermy specimens (16 birds, 2 mammals). Among these is a specimen of the taxonomically controversial Canis lupaster (African wolf) and one of the first specimen of Oenanthe xanthoprymna (Kurdish wheatear) held in European museums

The study of a prime adult female skeleton of brown bear, Ursus arctos, found in "Abisso Oriano Coltelli" cave is here reported. A new bone formation on the thoracic vertebrae was investigated by x-ray examination suggesting a longitudinal ligament injury caused by a circumscribed trauma, with ossified hematoma. The specimen was dated providing a conventional age of 6480 ± 40 14C ka BP (Holocene). The bear died from non-violent causes, probably during hibernation. The "Abisso Oriano Coltelli" mammal assemblage also includes Capra hircus, Martes foina and indeterminate small mammals. Standard archaeozoological parameters (NISP, MNI) have been used to calculate the relative frequency of each taxon identified in the faunal assemblage
