Giovanni Fantoni a Genova (1779-1800)
The essay examines the relationship between the city of Genoa and the literary production of Giovanni Fantoni, focusing above all on the collection of odes that Fantoni published in the Ligurian city in 1800, shortly before the beginning of the siege of Genoa by the troops of the Second Coalition, in which Fantoni fought
The Motor Action Mood Induction Procedure Affects the Detection of Facial Emotions
Fantoni and Gerbino (2014) showed that subtle postural shifts associated with reaching can have a strong hedonic impact and affect the actor's global experience. Using a novel Motor Action Mood Induction Procedure (MAMIP), they adapted participants to comfortable/uncomfortable visually-guided reaches and obtained consistent mood-congruency effects in the identification of facial emotions: a face perceived as neutral in a baseline condition appeared slightly happy after comfortable actions and slightly angry after uncomfortable actions. Here, using a detection task, we showed that moodcongruent effects following MAMIP included sensitivity changes, indicating that action affected perception, rather than simply biasing participant’s responses. Such results suggest that models of perceived facial emotions should include action-induced mood as a predictor and support strong links between body feelings and valence of the social environment
Weight function theory and variational formulations for three-dimensional plane elastic cracks advancing
The weight function theory for three-dimensional elastic crack analysis received great attention after the
work of Rice (1985, 1989). Several applications have been considered since then, particularly in the context
of configurational stability, crack path prediction, stress intensity factor expansions, perturbation
approaches. In all cases, a specific hypothesis has been made on the variation of crack shape, in order
to formulate the problem in terms of Cauchy principal value. In the present note, such hypothesis is further
investigated and consequences discussed. A variational statement given in Salvadori and Fantoni
(2013a) is thus rephrased in terms of weight functions. Its discrete formulation shows the potential to

On a 3D crack tracking algorithm and its variational nature.
The crack propagation problem for linear elastic fracture mechanics has been studied by several authors exploiting its analogy with standard dissipative systems theory (see e.g. Nguyen (2000), Mielke (2005) and Francfort and Marigo (1998)). In recent publications Salvadori and Carini (2011) and Salvadori and Fantoni (2013) minimum theorems were derived in terms of crack tip “quasi static velocity” for two- and three-dimensional fracture mechanics. They were reminiscent of Ceradini's theorem Ceradini (1965, 1966) in plasticity.
Such an incremental picture naturally leads to explicit methods for integration in time, with well know drawbacks in terms of accuracy and stability. The present work introduces an implicit Newton–Raphson based crack tracking algorithm which is endowed with a variational formulation

High order boundary and finite elements for 3D fracture propagation in brittle materials
The quasi-static propagation of fracture in brittle materials was studied in several recent publications. A variational formulation (Salvadori, 2008; Salvadori and Carini, 2011; Salvadori and Fantoni, 2013) led to three-dimensional crack tracking strategies (Salvadori and Fantoni, 2014 [2,3]; Salvadori and Fantoni, 2016). One of the complexities of this new class of algorithms is the evaluation of high-order terms of the expansion of the crack opening and sliding. In this paper, new types of finite and boundary elements are formulated that capture the near crack-front asymptotical displacement behavior up to the order 3/2
. The use of these elements with the quasi-static crack propagation algorithms of the above references is demonstrated for a simple crack configuration

Visual interpolation is not scale invariant.
According to the scale-dependence hypothesis, visual interpolation depends on the retinal separation of end- points: as retinal size increases, the interpolated contour deviates from the shortest path and approaches the unoccluded angle. In the field model (Fantoni & Gerbino, 2003) as the retinal size increases good continuation increases while minimal-path decreases. We ran two experiments using the probe localization technique. Retinal size was manipulated by changing viewing distance. Observers were asked to judge if a probe, briefly superposed on the occlusion region, was inside or outside the amodally completed angle. Retinal size strongly influ- enced the penetration of interpolated trajectories in the predicted direction. We modified the field model and generated model-based trajectories that fitted empirical data closely
Giovanni Fantoni en exil à Grenoble (1799)
Lauro Rossi, Giovanni Fantoni during the exile in Grenoble (1799).
Giovanni Fantoni was one of the most active of the Italian patriots who made their base in Grenoble in 1799 after the fall of the republics of Northern Italy. He was linked to the so-called « French anarchists » and to the « Generals' party », both of which were opposing the politics of the Directory in France. Giovanni Fantoni committed his life to quickly liberating the Italian lands occupied by the austrian-russian coalition. After Joubert's death, Giovanni Fantoni allied himself with Championnet, with whose help he hoped to start a new united Italian republic.Lauro Rossi, Giovanni Fantoni durante l'esilio a Grenoble (1799).
