Non-Markovianity quantifier of an arbitrary quantum process

Focusing on the entanglement-based measure of non-Markovianity we propose a numerically feasible quantifier for finite-dimensional systems. We define the non-Markovianity measure in terms of a class of entanglement quantifiers named witnessed entanglement which allow us to write several entanglement based measures of non-Markovianity in a unique formalism. In this formalism, we show that the non-Markovianity, in a given time interval, can be witnessed by calculating the expectation value of an observable, making it attractive for experimental investigations. Following this property we introduce a quantifier base on the entanglement witness in an interval of time; we show that measure is a bonafide measure of non-Markovianity. In our example, we use the generalized robustness of entanglement, an entanglement measure that can be readily calculated by a semidefinite programming method, to study impurity atoms coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate
Review of: Pathfinders by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto
Reviewing a work that has received so much praise over the past two years always presents a difficult task. One only has to turn to the back cover of the current paperback to see the many accolades bestowed upon Felipe Fernández-Armesto's latest work. Most prominently, his Pathfinders received the prestigious World History Association Prize in 2007, an honor that openly acknowledges the global reach of the work under consideration. Moreover, although the book lists him as teaching at Tufts University, Fernández-Armesto's prolific output was recently honored by an appointment as the William P. Reynolds Professor of History at Notre Dame University. The teaching and research of world history has experienced a glut of introductory texts in recent years and novel approaches from which to tell a global narrative are becoming rare. Fernández-Armesto's work succeeds in this regard as he selects a particular topic – exploration – that carries transnational overtones. To fashion such a global framework for exploration Fernández-Armesto builds on his extensive work in the Iberian expansion and the Atlantic Ocean. Exploration, the author argues, is after all, a human affair and can thus be engaged for a global human narrative. According to the author, human global history is about two major stories: "The first is the very long one of how human cultures diverged … The second is the main subject of the book: a relatively short and recent story of convergence..." (p. 1) On the surface such a statement might be unsurprising. Placed in the context of exploration, however, the issue of divergence and convergence transcends hemispheric or continental histories that seemingly favor certain parts of the globe over others. His story, however, is truly global in that it follows the divergent expansion of Homo sapiens out of Africa in his first chapter (stretching) before turning to the subject of human convergence.Review of: Pathfinders by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. geschichte.transnational & H-Soz-u-Kult.
Este conceito será um dos caminhos para defendermos nossa hipótese de que é possível verificar o ceticismo como um método crítico em Memórias do SubsoloThis work investigates the use of skepticism as critical method in the work Notes from Underground, written by the russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. This route will be contextualizing the work and discussions of the time, showing how Dostoevsky has a religious perspective on the human that clashes with the materialist theories in the russian socio cultural environment in 1860. With the main interlocutor of these discussions, the thinker Nikolai Chernyshevsky, Dostoevsky nourishes intense years of discussion, culminating in the book studied in this dissertation. Then, we will present the skeptical pyrrhonean philosophy, as well as the skepticism of proximity to the literature. The link between Dostoevsky and skepticism is made from the work Critique and Prophecy written by Luiz Felipe Pondé in which the author points this feature through the concept of equipollence of voices. This concept is one of the ways to defend our hypothesis that you can check skepticism as a critical method in Notes from UndergroundCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
El "Nuevo diccionario italiano-español / Nuovo dizionario spagnuolo-italiano" de Felipe Linati y Delgado
This chapter contributes to the reconstruction of the Italian-Spanish lexicography in the 19th century with an in-depth study of Felipe Linati’s “Nuovo dizionario spagnuolo-italiano” (1887 first edition). This dictionary has been mentioned before but so far no one has studied it in detail nor made researches about its author and the sources that he could have consulted.
The study presents a new contribution on Felipe Linati’s life and lexicographic work, and on the two publishers that published the Spanish and the Italian editions. The detailed philological comparison of the two editions known till now has led to the discovery of a third unknown edition and to the Spanish and Italian sources of the dictionary. The latter do not exactly match those given by the author in the preface and question the date of the first and second edition. Therefore, the study illustrates not only the lexicographical work of the author of “Nuovo dizionario” but also a a chapter in the history of publishing in the late 19th century
Quantum correlations between each qubit in a two-atom system and the environment in terms of interatomic distance
The quantum correlations between a qubit and its environment are described quantitatively in terms of interatomic distance. Specifically, considering a realistic system of two two-level atoms and taking into account the dipole-dipole interaction and collective damping, the quantum entanglement and quantum discord are investigated during the dissipative process as functions of the interatomic distance. For atoms that are initially maximally entangled, it turns out that there is a critical distance at which each atom is maximally quantum correlated with its environment. Counterintuitively, the approach of the two atoms can maximize the entanglement between each one and the environment and, even at the same distance, minimize the loss of entanglement between the pair.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Abdus Salam Int Ctr Theoret Phys, Miramare Trieste, ItalyUniv Mohammed V Agdal, Phys Theor Lab, Fac Sci, Rabat, MoroccoUNESP, Dept Fis, Fac Ciencias, BR-17033360 Bauru, SP, BrazilSohag Univ, Dept Math, Fac Sci, Sohag 82524, EgyptTaif Univ, Fac Sci, Dept Math, At Taif, Saudi ArabiaUNESP, Dept Fis, Fac Ciencias, BR-17033360 Bauru, SP, Brazi

Factorization and criticality in the anisotropic XY chain via correlations
In this review, we discuss the zero and finite temperature behavior of various bipartite quantum and total correlation measures, the skew information-based quantum coherence and the local quantum uncertainty in the thermal ground state of the one-dimensional anisotropic XY model in a transverse magnetic field. We compare the ability of the considered measures to correctly detect or estimate the quantum critical point and the non-trivial factorization point possessed by the spin chain.National Institute for Science and Technology of Quantum Information (INCT-IQ, Brazil)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Faculdade de Ciências, UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista, Bauru, SP, 17033-360, Brazil;Faculdade de Ciências, UNESP - Universidade Estadual Paulista, Bauru, SP, 17033-360, BrazilNational Institute for Science and Technology of Quantum Information (INCT-IQ, Brazil): 2008/57856-6CNPq: 474592/2013-8FAPESP: 2012/50464-0FAPESP: 2012/18558-5FAPESP: 2014/20941-
