Magnesium alloy strip produced by a melt-conditioned twin roll casting process
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Twin roll casting (TRC) offers a promising route for the economic production of
Mg sheet, but unfortunately, it produces strip with coarse and non-uniform
microstructures and severe centre line segregation. Recently, a novel magnesium strip casting process termed melt conditioned twin roll casting (MC-TRC) was developed that, compared with the conventional TRC process, emphasizes solidification control at the casting stage rather than hot rolling. This was achieved by melt conditioning under intensive forced convection prior to twin roll casting resulting in enhanced heterogeneous nucleation followed by equiaxed growth. In this study the development of TRC and MC-TRC processes and a microstructural comparison of the MC-TRC Mg-alloy strip with that of conventional TRC strip, have been investigated. Emphasis has been focused
on the solidification behaviour of the intensively sheared liquid metal, and on the
mechanisms for microstructural refinement and compositional uniformity in the MCTRC
process. The results of the process development indicate that the MC-TRC process
reduces considerably or eliminates defects such as the centre line segregation, voids and cracks at or near the strip surface that are always present in conventional TRC strip.
The newly-designed homogenization treatment investigated for TRC and MC-TRC magnesium alloy strips was based on microstructural evolution obtained during heat treatment. The results of the MC-TRC strips showed a much faster recrystallization rate with finer recrystallized grains, which are due to more homogeneous and a finer grain size of the as-cast MC-TRC strips compared with the as-cast TRC strips.
During down-stream processing, the effects of MC-TRC process on microstructural
evolution of hot-rolled magnesium strips have been understood thoroughly by accurate control of the hot-rolling procedure during each step of strip thickness reduction. This
study indicates that the MC-TRC strip requires fewer rolling steps when compared to
TRC strip, thus offering reduced processing cost and carbon footprint. Mechanical
properties at room temperature of MC-TRC as-cast and rolled sheets are much improved
when compared with the conventional TRC as-cast and rolled sheets which can result in
a higher quality of final components. The mechanical properties at elevated temperature
shows for the first time that the higher elongation and lower yield strength of MC-TRC
as-cast strips at a temperature close to its optimised hot-rolling temperature results in
better ability for rolling and higher ductility of MC-TRC Mg strip compared with the TRC Mg strip

Hamodes zhipengi Zhang & Wei & Fan & Wang 2023, sp. nov.
Hamodes zhipengi sp. nov. [Chinese name: ṪḂẹãḋ] Figs 1,2,5,6 Type material. Holotype: male, CHINA, Guangdong province, Qingyuan city, Shimentai National Nature Reserve, altitude 126m, 11-Ⅴ-2021, leg. M. Wang (voucher number “ SCAU HA09 ”). Paratype: 1 female: with the same data as holotype (voucher number “ SCAU HA10 ”), 2 male, 1 female: CHINA, Guangdong province, Shaoguan city, Nanling National Nature Reserve, 22- Ⅴ -2021, leg. M. Wang (voucher number “ SCAU HA11 ”, “ SCAU HA12 ”, “ SCAU HA13 ”), 2 males: CHINA, Hubei province, Shennongjia National Park, 13-VIII-2018 (voucher number “ SCAU HA34 ”, “ SCAU HA35 ”), 1 female: CHINA, Guangdong province, Shaoguan city, Ruyuan county, altitude 500m, 22-IX-2018, leg. The new species is morphologically resembled H. pseudobutleri, but the wings ground colour is darker; subapical ventral section of valvae semi-membranous (sclerotized in pseudobutleri); valvae slender (broad in pseudobutleri); ampullae slender and elongated (short in pseudobutleri); ductus shorter and thicker (slender in pseudobutleri); bursa bigger (smaller and rounded in pseudobutleri). However, the Maximum Likelihood (ML) tree of Hamodes (Fig. 9) shows that the new species is most closely related to H. butleri which is unexpected. Within the genus, nine individuals of H. zhipengi are recovered in a clade with strong support (UFBoot= 98). The pairwise Kimura 2-parameter (K2P) distances between the species in Hamodes range from 4.96% to 9.95%, and the distances between H. zhipengi and relatives, H. hainana, H. pseudobutleri and H. butleri are 5.21%, 5.27% and 6.37%, respectively (Table. 2). Description. Male (Fig. 1). Length of forewing 11.8 mm.Antennae filiform, dark brown; labial palpus brownish; thorax brown, tegulae brown; abdomen dorsally brown in 1 st- 4 th segments, black in 5 th- 8 th segments. Forewing ground colour fuscous brown, scattered with tiny black scales; outer marginal area darker than inner area; antemedial line blackish-grey straight and irregular, extending from costa to 1A+2A; medial line black and obscure, extending from costa to vein R 5 and followed by a crescent-like reniform stigma; orbicular stigma black, dot-like; postmedial line black and obscure, extending from costa to vein R 4; submarginal line blackish brown defined with fine ochreous-whitish line at inner side. Hindwing ground colour same as forewing, median line black extending from Rs vein to middle of anal margin, defined by ochreous-whitish inner stripe, discal spot fine, bar-shaped, dark grey. Male genitalia (Fig. 5). Uncus slender and hook-shaped; tegumen narrow; valvae long and narrow, subapical ventral semi-membranous; ampullae slender and hook-shaped, left slightly shorter than right; costa sclerotized; saccus small; aedeagus thick and long, with sclerotized lamellae. Female (Fig. 2). Wingspan 11.2 mm. Compared with the male adult, the ground colour of the wings is lighter, fasciae and stigmata are dimmer; abdomen dorsally brown. Female genitalia (Fig. 6). Anal papillae thick and long; anterior and posterior apophyses slender; ductus bursae long, flattened tubular, dilated anteriorly, partly strongly and smoothly sclerotised; appendix bursae membranous, slightly helicoidal; corpus bursae membranous, finely and irregularly scobinate. Distribution. China: Guangdong, Hubei, Guizhou. Etymology. Developing students' awareness of Global Englishes
Although research on Global Englishes (GE) has demonstrated the potential for a new perspective of ELT, studies of GE in an Asian ELT context are relatively rare. As current mainstream ELT practice in China still largely emphasizes 'native English', university courses related to GE are scarce. This paper aims to unpack the influence of a course on English as a World Language in Chinese university students' awareness of their own English and GE. Data were collected from students taking the optional course at a university in southeast China. After reporting the findings, the paper further discusses the pedagogical implications of integrating GE into English learning and teaching. It also argues for raising students' GE awareness and applying critical pedagogy in ELT for GE-oriented instruction.</p
