Stock Market Reactions to Industrial Disasters: Evidence from Incident Firms and Their Competitors
My paper analyzes the impacts of chemical disasters on both incident firms and non-incident firms. I consider a sample of 58 explosions in chemical plants in the U.S. over the period 1990-2017. Using event study, I find that incident firms on average experience a statistically and economically significant drop in market value following chemical disasters, and the negative impacts are permanent. In addition, my paper finds that on average the equity value of competitor firms suffers significant losses stemming from contagion effects; however, competitive effects dominate when accidents are minor. Using cross-sectional analysis, I show that the loss is significantly related to the severity of the incident as measured by causalities and by chemical pollution. Therefore, my research can be used to promote and justify the cost of safety mechanisms in the petrochemical industry
Solar-powered wireless sensors network - transmission part
Solar-powered wireless sensor network: A wireless power transmission system is designed to
integrate a photovoltaic charging module into the inside facade of a facility or building and use
it to power a few LoRa sensor nodes distributed in that region. It can be used to directly power
an array of sensors or an RF transmitter to indirectly power a network of sensors within the
room. The need to replace batteries in sensor nodes is entirely eliminated. The energy that is
usually lost to the environment is reused, therefore enabling the wireless sensor network to be
carbon neutral.
It is aimed at being used in a live environment that has ambient light, such as an office. Once
the light is on, the small solar panels will convert the ambient light energy into DC power
through some energy harvesting components and store the energy in the battery. Then the
battery will power up the transmitting devices, in turn powering up the LoRa sensors. The
hardware core of the transmitting part uses a power bank charging module, a transmitter device,
an RF antenna, and an evaluation board. The power bank charging module is used to transmit
the power in the battery to the transmitter in the form of a USB port. The transmitter is used to
convert the DC power to RF energy and wirelessly transmit the power to the evaluation board.
The evaluation board is used to convert the RF energy back to DC power.
The technologies involved are as follows: Wi-Fi network communications, RF harvesting
technologies, low-powered LoRa protocol communications, and database programming. With
the help of an abundance of open-source libraries, the development time to completion is much

A Tool for Concept Validation: From Brand to Concepts
There is an increasing number of products in the market. Many of them get copied the second they launch. In the end, everything looks identical. Digitalization is the main reason behind, causing the commoditization of the products (van Erp, 2011). Eventually, a brand becomes the only thing creating difference among competitors. However, instead of blaming the digital revolution, it is possible to take a step back and find a way out by designing from the brand perspective. So, what is the brand experience? Brand experiences can be defined as the overall experiences that cover customers’ sensations, feelings, thoughts, and actions lived within a certain brand. These experiences cause customer responses through brand-related stimuli (Brakus et al., 2009). Designers play an important role in the creation of brand experiences by translating the brand into the design. A touchpoint is considered as the final version of a design that is made for a certain brand. It can be a website, mobile application, packaging or a tangible product. Therefore, the design of the manifestation is a quite similar process with the standard user-centric design processes. The only difference is that while the user-centric design processes have the focus of the user, in this design process the focus is the brand. During the brand experience design process, there are many difficulties that designers face. The main reason behind is that in the literature, there are no inductive or deductive methods for designing for brand experiences nor is there a process for making a product or a service ‘on brand’. Think the brand out loud is a tool designed for validating the concepts if they are ‘on brand’ or not. The tool consists of a manual, card set and two boards. The card set is a selection of brand values, personalities, and emotions, and boards (explained in the manual) help both to define the brand’s core elements and to select concepts according to those core elements. While the tool guides the design team to discuss and reach a consensus, at the same time, it reveals the strengths and weaknesses of each design concept and helps to define directions for the final design.Design for Interactio
Positive Strategic Design: The development of a design tool that facilitates positive organizational and business development
This report is the result of a self-initiated design graduation project that regarded positive design in a strategic design context. The goal of the project was to design and develop a tool or method that integrates positive design knowledge into strategic design processes. To get to the bottom of this, desk research and user research into the domains of strategic and positive design were conducted. Research presented opportunities to apply happiness interventions on multiple strategic levels of a product-service system. These opportunities were developed into an overview, the positive strategic design (PSD) framework. Research also presented several strategically viable implications to communicate the happiness interventions. The chosen strategy was one that was directed at design students. The students are the bridge between theory and practice and can potentially improve engagement with positive design in both areas. The strategy was to create a solution that included principles from both strategic design and positive design and incorporated the PSD framework. The final design included a tool in the form of website and a printable card set and were developed to give users the same value independent of the format that they use. Back to the ground life: Reconsidering the shift of living conditions for urban poor during the chawl redevelopment in Mumbai
Mumbai has seen the rapid urbanization in recent years. A large influx of migrants look for business and employee opportunities in the city, which led to the issue of over-population. It is estimated that there is a population of more than 21 million in Mumbai in 2018, while over 40 percent of people live in the informal settlements in extremely poor conditions. Meanwhile, construction activities have been carried out by both government and private developers to provide more affordable housing for the urban poor. However, there is a tendency that what a megapolis should look like is judged mainly by its form rather than the process, which gives chance to the real estate construction industry. High-rise and mid-rise towers have been built for slum dwellers, mainly migrants, which completely ignores their existing living habits and economical features. The 'modern' life differs from original rural life of migrants, leading to the social isolation as well.
