Air and Water Flowrate Optimisation for a Fan Coil Unit in Heat Pump Systems
The degradation in efficiency of auxiliary components in heating/cooling systems when operating at part load is frequently reported. Through the use of variable speed components, the supplied capacity can be reduced to match the required load and hence reduce unnecessary energy consumption. However, for fan coil units, difficulties can arise when optimizing fan and pump speeds at part load. Practically locating optimal water and air flow rates from readily available information and for varying supplied capacities is necessary, in order to reduce the fan coil power consumption. This research attempts to identify whether optimal fan and pump speeds exist for a fan coil unit and how they can be implemented, in a practical manner, in a system control applications. Using an empirical fan coil and pump model, the total power consumption (fan and pump) for different combinations of fan and pump speeds over a range of capacities was calculated. It was observed that, for a given capacity, an optimal combination of fan and pump speeds exists and there was a significant change in power consumption for different combinations of fan and pump speeds supplying the same capacity. A control strategy is described that utilizes a simple fan coil capacity estimation model, coupled with air and water flow rates, along with nominal design data. The pump speed is optimized using PID control to maintain the space temperature at the chosen set-point, which matches the supplied capacity to the required capacity. At set-time intervals, the capacity estimation model is utilized to optimize the water and air flow rates for the required capacity. The control strategy is evaluated, using a full building simulation model for a daily load profile and is compared to two baseline conditions: for no control of the fancoils/pump combination and for PID circulation control of the pump only. The optimal fan and pump speed control resulted in a 43% and 24% decrease in power consumption with compared to the no control baseline and the PID controlled circulation pump strategy, respectively

Thecobathra longisaccata sp. nov. (Figs. 3, 10) Type material. Holotype: ɗ, CHINA: Ruili [24 °00'N, 97 ° 50 'E], Yunnan Province, 1000 m, 6.viii. 2005, coll. Yingdang Ren, genitalia slide no. FXM06051. Diagnosis. The new species can be recognized by the large triangular male valva, an apically rounded large projection near the base of the costa, and the length of the saccus, which exceeds the phallus. Description. Adult (Fig. 3): Wing expanse 16.0 mm. Head white, with sparse scales. Antenna with scape white, flagellum white and pale brown alternately. Labial palpus with basal and second segments white, third segment pale brown mixed with white. Thorax and tegula white. Forewing silvery white, somewhat pale yellowish; costal margin with basal 1 / 8 black, distal half pale yellow; cilia brownish yellow except distal 1 / 4 black. Hindwing silvery white, tinged with yellowish brown distally; cilia white. Legs white; hind tibia with a yellowish brown dot at end of each side, hind tarsus pale yellow except black at apex. Male genitalia (Fig. 10): Socius slender, horn shaped, arched on dorsal edge, with a sclerotized tooth apically. Tuba analis membranous. Ventral plate of gnathos large and heart-shaped, blunt and sclerotized apically. Valva subtriangular; uprising, forming a broad right angle ventrally; basal 1 / 3 broad, almost naked; distal 2 / 3 triangular, densely setose, oblique on outer margin, pointed at apex; costa curved at middle, with an apically rounded projection basally. Sacculus narrow, indistinct. Saccus long, Y-shaped, anterior 1 / 3 gradually narrowed, curved distally, rounded at apex. Phallus slender and straight, shorter than saccus, with a row of curved dentation ranging from basal 1 / 5 to apex. Female: Unknown. Distribution. China (Yunnan). Etymology. Thecobathra latibasis sp. nov. (Figs. 4, 11) Type material. Holotype: ɗ, CHINA: Jinxiu County [24 °08'N, 110 ° 11 'E], Guangxi, 550 m, 13.iv. 2002, coll. Shulian Hao and Huaijun Xue, genitalia slide no. FXM06049. Diagnosis. The new species can be separated from other congeners by the small, short socius, and by the valva, which has a broadly expanded base and an extremely long and curved, spine-shaped inner process basally. Description. Adult (Fig. 4): Wing expanse 14.0 mm. Head white, with appressed scales on frons and long rough scales between antennae. Antenna with scape white, flagellum pale brownish yellow. Labial palpus white, third segment yellowish distally. Thorax and tegula snow white. Forewing white sparsely tinged with brown, with a brown spot at below distal 1 / 3 of fold; costal margin with basal 1 / 4 black, distal 1 / 4 dark brown; cilia white but grey distally. Hindwing and cilia white, pale yellowish brown distally. Legs white except tarsi black at apex; hind tibia with a dark yellowish brown dot at end of each side. Male genitalia (Fig. 11): Socius small and short, finger shaped, with a sclerotized tooth-like process apically. Tuba analis membranous, basal half widened. Ventral plate of gnathos large trapezoidal, edge sclerotized, with a triangular process at middle apically. Valva large, uprising; basal 2 / 5 extremely broadened by roundly expanding ventrally; distal 3 / 5 narrow, nearly parallel sided laterally, rounded at apex; costa weakly sclerotized in basal half, curved at middle; a sclerotized, long and curved, spine-shaped inner process arising from base. Sacculus narrow, indistinct, somewhat arched ventrally. Saccus Y-shaped, curved distally, rounded at apex. Phallus short, slightly longer than saccus, strong and curved, with a small triangular tooth at 2 / 5, distal 3 / 5 dentate on one side. Female: Unknown. Distribution. China (Guangxi). Etymology. Thecobathra basilobata sp. nov. (Figs. 1, 8) Type material. Holotype: ɗ, CHINA: Mt. Baxian (Pahsien) [24 °09'N, 121 °01'E], Taizhong, Taiwan, 800– 900 m, 16.viii. 2006, coll. Houhun Li and Xicui Du, genitalia slide no. FXM06123. Paratypes: 1 ɗ, same data as holotype (NSU); 1 ɗ, Sikanshui, Taizhong, Taiwan, 550–600 m, 4.viii. 2006, coll. Houhun Li and Xicui Du. Diagnosis. This species is similar to T. anas (Stringer) in the male genitalia, but can be distinguished easily from it by the socius bluntly angled at 1 / 4 on dorsal edge, the ventral margin of valva with distal 3 / 5 obliquely blunt, and the sacculus nearly straight ventrally. In T.anas, the socius is somewhat acutely angled at 1 / 4 on dorsal edge, the distal half of the ventral margin of the valva is roundly arched outward, and the sacculus is deeply concave inward ventrally. Description. Adult (Fig. 1): Wing expanse 12.5–13.5 mm. Head white, with appressed scales on frons and rough scales tufted between antennae. Antenna with scape white, flagellum pale yellow. Labial palpus white, ascending. Thorax and tegula white. Forewing with apex rounded, termen bluntly oblique; white with scattered brown scales; distal 1 / 5 of costal margin and termen brown, forming a thin arched line; an oblique brown spot set at about 2 / 3 of fold; cilia white with greyish brown tip. Hindwing and cilia grey. Legs white; tibiae and tarsi pale yellow; hind tibia laterally with dark brown dot on end. Male genitalia (Fig. 8): Socius bluntly angled at 1 / 4 on dorsal edge, slightly narrowed to apex; apex pointed and hooked. Tuba analis membranous. Ventral plate of gnathos with fine spines apically. Valva narrow at base, slightly widened to about 2 / 5, distal 3 / 5 gradually narrowed to rounded apex; ventral margin with distal 3 / 5 obliquely blunt, distinctly protruding at 2 / 5, forming a corner with a spine. Sacculus narrow, almost straight, only gently arched, with a large hairy lobe basally. Saccus with posterior half large U-shaped, anterior half gradually narrowed to bluntly rounded apex. Phallus about 1.5 times length of saccus, slender and straight, dorsal edge with distal half and ventral edge with distal 1 / 5 dentate, apex narrowly pointed. Female: Unknown. Distribution. China (Taiwan). Etymology. Thecobathra paranas sp. nov. (Figs. 6, 13) Type material. Holotype: ɗ, CHINA: Ruili [24 °00'N, 97 ° 50 'E], Yunnan Province, 1000 m, 7.viii. 2005, coll. Yingdang Ren, genitalia slide no. FXM07040. Diagnosis. This species is similar to T. anas (Stringer) in the male genitalia, but can be distinguished from it by the ventral plate of gnathos, in which the anterior margin is spined and concave inward medially, and by the valva, in which the ventral margin roundly protrudes between the apex of the sacculus and the tooth. Description. Adult (Fig. 6): Wing expanse 13.0 mm. Head white, with long rough scales on vertex. Antenna white. Labial palpus white, pale yellow on ventral surface of second segment, upturned. Thorax and tegula snow white. Forewing white, tinged with greyish brown; costal margin with basal 1 / 7 black; cilia white. Hindwing pale brown; cilia white. Legs white except tarsi somewhat pale yellowish and hind tibia with a black dot at apex of either side. Male genitalia (Fig. 13): Socius somewhat footlike in shape, slightly narrowed at base; dorsal edge expanded outward at 1 / 3, forming a blunt angle, then straight to near apex, apex pointed and curved down; ventral edge gently arched. Tuba analis membranous. Ventral plate of gnathos more or less trumpet shaped, anterior margin spined, concave inward medially. Valva broad, uprising; basal 1 / 4 uniformly narrowed, widened at 1 / 4, then gradually narrowed to rounded apex; costa curved medially; ventral margin gently arched, with a tooth near middle, roundly protruding between apex of sacculus and the tooth. Sacculus narrow, concave inward. Saccus with posterior half widely V-shaped, anterior half long triangular, rounded at apex. Phallus about 1.5 times length of saccus, slender and slightly curved; with two rows of dentation: one row from 2 / 5 to apex, the other from distal 1 / 3 to apex. Female: Unknown. Distribution. China (Yunnan). Etymology.
