No full textI just wrote a few hours ago, a propos of Selected Stories from Panchatantra, that it was curious that the same publisher put out two Panchatantra books by the same author but different illustrators within about four years of each other. Then again, there is yet another Panchatantra book within this series pictured on the back cover of this book! And this is that book pictured on that back cover! It matches its series mate in format: 7 x 9¼. It has the same author, illustrator, and length of 120 pages. It offers 38 numbered fables. There is again a T of C on 3-4. Among many old friends, I have enjoyed reading Jackal Remains Jackal (13). A lioness brings up a jackal with her cubs but notices that the jackal hangs back while the cubs attack an elephant. The lioness tells the jackal what he is and tells him that her cubs will never tolerate the company of a coward. The talkative tortoise here flies with swans (58). The foolish monkeys blow on their non-fire with bamboo pipes (66). La Fontaine's cunning old cat judges between the squirrel and the mouse on 115-18. The curious monkey on 118 loses his tail in the split log. The cover proclaims Illustrated in Colour, and there are one or two larger-than-half-page colored illustrations for each of the stories. Most curious of them may be the detailed presentation of the bedbug and the mosquito on the fat king's bed (29). The most dramatic may be the crab's throttling of the crane in mid-air on 91.Retold by Rashmi Jaiswa

Selected Stories from Panchatantra
No full textIt is curious that the same publisher put out two Panchatantra books by the same author but different illustrators within about four years of each other. Then again, there is yet another Panchatantra book within this series pictured on the back cover of this book! This slightly smaller-format (7 x 9¼) paperback is like Alka's Panchatantra Stories, for which I guessed a date of 2001. It offers 31 numbered fables on 120 pages. There is a T of C on 3-4. This collection features standard Panchatantra stories. New to me is a story prominently pictured on the book's cover: Greed and the Strange Wheel (16) has four friends searching for wealth. The last of them, too greedy to want to share the others' wealth, encounters a man who like him had been searching for diamonds. This man has a wheel revolving around his bloody head. Finding this new searcher at last relieves him of his burden, and now the new victim must wait for another greedy searcher to come. Again here, GGE appears as a Panchatantra story (23), as does MSA (39), again with a washerman as protagonist. On 73, a weaver with a wish to be granted is prevailed upon by his wife to ask for two more hands; the villagers think he is some evil spirit and beat him to death. The second-to-last story involves an iron bar that is allegedly eaten by mice (111). The cover proclaims Illustrated in Colour, and there are one or two larger-than-half-page colored illustrations for each of the stories.Retold by Rashmi Jaiswa

No full textStili del razionalismo. Anatomia di quattordici opere di architettura è un libro sugli aspetti materici e tecnici di quattordici architetture italiane degli anni ’30. Il libro è concepito come un unicum bifronte che offre per ogni opera una doppia lettura: da un lato una ricerca sui materiali e le soluzioni costruttive che contraddistinguono gli edifici, dall’altro l’interpretazione e il contributo propriamente critico con i saggi di vari autori (storici dell’architettura, architetti, studiosi della cultura materiale dell’epoca...). Le opere trattate sono tra le più importanti e note realizzate tra l’inizio degli anni ’30 e i primi anni della guerra (la Casa del fascio di G. Terragni a Como; la Casa della G.I.L. a Roma di L. Moretti, l’Istituto di fisica di G. Pagano e la Scuola di Matematica di G. Ponti alla Città Universitaria di Roma; le Poste a Roma di A. Libera, di M. Ridolfi, di G, Samonà; la casa della scherma a Roma di L. Moretti, il Dispensario antitubercolare ad Alessandria di I. Gardella, Il Palazzo per uffici Montecatini a Milano di G. Ponti; l’Università L. Bocconi a Milano di G. Pagano; il Palazzo dei ricevimenti e dei congressi di A. Libera all’Eur; la Casa a Cernobbio di C. Cattaneo; le Poste di BBPR all’Eur). Il tutto fonda un’unità, in cui si ritrovano le identità dei singoli autori, diversi tra loro nell’impostazione del progetto e nei particolari costruttivi, ma legati da un comune sentire riguardo a forme e materie. Le descrizioni dei caratteri costruttivi e i saggi sono integrati da XXXVI tavole dei particolari architettonici originari relativi sia alle facciate principali che ad elementi, quali i serramenti. Le fotografie, tutte in bianco e nero dell’epoca, illustrano gli scritti e sono un vero e proprio strumento di verifica riguardo ai materiali e alle soluzioni costruttive adottate nelle opere. Gli aspetti materici delle 14 architetture sono anche valorizzati da un ampio glossario dei materiali utilizzati (dagli agglomerati di sughero, al Linoleum, ai profilati Ferrofinestra, a tutte le pietre e i marmi impiegati) e da due bibliografie: sui materiali edilizi (con ben 700 citazioni bibliografiche di manuali e articoli comparsi sulle principali riviste di architettura - Architettura, Architettura ed Arti Decorative, Capitolium, Casabella, Case d’oggi, Civiltà, Domus..... - e di testate patrocinate dalle federazioni e associazioni di categoria specializzate nella presentazione dei loro prodotti - Alluminio, Glaces et verres, Edilizia moderna, Il Marmo, Marmi, Pietre e Graniti, Il Vetro, L’Industria Italiana del Cemento...) e sulle singole opere. Si tratta in sostanza di una “fotografia” delle caratteristiche dei materiali e dei principali processi produttivi in uso all’epoca che ci fa comprendere come in queste architetture convivano due anime materiche con durate di vita assai diverse: materiali che invecchiano bene come i marmi e le pietre e materiali prodotti industrialmente che hanno mostrato nel tempo la loro scarsa resistenza e spesso non esistono più. La convinzione che sottende questa ricerca sui materiali è il ruolo fondamentale che essi hanno nella cultura architettonica italiana e nelle questioni legate alla manutenzione e al restauro. STILI DEL RAZIONALISMO è indirizzato ad un pubblico specializzato (architetti, studiosi...), ma è anche un testo che dovrebbe essere di qualche interesse per le aziende specializzate nel settore dei materiali edilizi: la ricostruzione, seppur parziale, di un sapere tecnico specifico che riguarda i materiali e le soluzioni tecniche degli anni ‘30, è un aspetto che fa parte della storia della nostra cultura materiale e che dovrebbe essere considerato in qualsiasi programma di restauro. The calcium signal for BALB/MK keratinocyte terminal differentiation counteracts epidermal growth factor (EGF) very early in the EGF-induced proliferative pathway
No full textBALB/MK mouse epidermal keratinocytes require epidermal growth factor (EGF) for proliferation and terminally differentiate in response to high calcium concentrations. We show that EGF is an extremely potent mitogen, causing BALB/MK cultures to enter the cell cycle in a synchronous manner associated with a greater than 100-fold increase in DNA synthesis. Analysis of the expression of proto-oncogenes which have been reported to be activated during the cascade of events following growth factor stimulation of fibroblasts or lymphoid cells revealed a very rapid but transient 100-fold increase in c-fos RNA but little or no effect on the other proto-oncogenes analyzed. Exposure of EGF-synchronized BALB/MK cells to high levels of calcium was associated with a striking decrease in the early burst of c-fos RNA as well as the subsequent peak of cell DNA synthesis. Since the inhibitory effect of high calcium on c-fos RNA expression was measurable within 30 min, our studies imply that the EGF proliferative and calcium differentiation signals must interact very early in the pathway of EGF-induced proliferation. Our results also establish that c-fos RNA modulation is an important early marker of cell proliferation in epithelial as well as mesenchymal cells

No full textThe biostratigraphical characteristics of three sequences outcropping in the Simbruini-Ernici Mts. are discussed in order to reconstruct the lithobiofacies evolution of the Central-Western Latium-Abruzzi carbonate platform during the Turonian-? Maastrichtian p.p.. For each section the macro- and microbiofacies are discussed, with the former characterized by the presence of rudists (Hippuritoida). The occurrence in the neighborhood of some fossiliferous beds of particular biostratigraphical value, us to make correlations with other areas. -Author
