An overview on modelling approaches for photochemical and photoelectrochemical solar fuels processes and technologies
Get PDFPhoto-electrochemical and photocatalytic technologies are promising solutions for solar fuel production and involve a number of physical and chemical phenomena. We provide an overview of numerical and analytical tools to describe such phenomena occurring at disparate time and space scales within devices such as photo-electrochemical cells and photo-chemical reactors. On one hand, chemical phenomena include photo-induced electron transfer, charge separation, recombination, equilibrium reactions between species in solutions and adsorption reactions. On the other hand, examples of physical phenomena are the transport of chemical species or self-assembling of molecular structures. In this respect, we critically review macroscale continuum models for transport phenomena combined with kinetic descriptions including their possible coupling with models at even lower scales. We specifically focus on atomistic and coarse-grained models able to represent the local environment of the reactive interfaces such as photoelectrodes or supra-molecular assemblies. The critical role of the latter structures on photochemical conversion is highlighted: Therefore, morphological structure of self-assemblies, such as micelles and monolayers, in solution and at the solid–liquid or gas–liquid interfaces are also discussed. Finally, important scientific gaps are identified and possible perspectives for future research outlooked
Extracellular Vesicles of <i>Pseudomonas</i>: Friends and Foes
Get PDFExtracellular vesicles (Evs) are small spherical vesicles capable of transporting molecules (such as proteins, nucleic acids and lipids) from one cell to another. They have been implicated in processes such as cell-to-cell communication, pathogenicity, biofilm formation and metabolism. In parallel, Evs have been proposed as interesting biotechnological tools. In recent years, antibiotic resistance has become a major problem for human health worldwide. A pathogen singled out as among the most lethal antibiotic-resistant organisms is Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an important Gram-negative bacterium that has been extensively studied for the production and characterization of Evs. Here, we describe the advances made in the last decade regarding understanding of the role of Evs in the pathogenicity of Pseudomonas. We also examine the potential of Evs for the development of new treatment strategies
Expression and Role of Heparan Sulfated Proteoglycans in Pancreatic Cancer
Get PDFPancreatic cancer is a lethal condition with poor outcomes and an increasing incidence. The unfavourable prognosis is due to the lack of early symptoms and consequent late diagnosis. An effective method for the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is therefore sought by many researchers in the field. Heparan sulfated proteoglycan-related genes are often expressed differently in tumors than in normal tissues. Alteration of the tumor microenvironment is correlated with the ability of heparan sulfated proteoglycans to bind cytokines and growth factors and eventually to influence tumor progression. Here we discuss the importance of glypicans, syndecans, perlecan and extracellular matrix modifying enzymes, such as heparanases and sulfatases, as potential diagnostics in pancreatic cancer. We also ran an analysis on a multidimensional cancer genomics database for heparan sulfated proteoglycan-related genes, and report altered expression of some of them
Les données bancaires volées par Falciani divisent les tribunaux
No full textEn 2008, Hervé Falciani, ex-employé de HSBC, a volé les données de 120,000 clients de la banque et les a remises au fisc français. Ces données ont ensuite été partagées avec divers gouvernements étrangers, provoquant une série de demandes d'entraide internationale à la Suisse. Cependant, l'acceptation de ces demandes, basées sur des données bancaires volées, n'est pas uniforme. Le Tribunal fédéral suisse a d'abord refusé de fournir une assistance à la France, mais a ensuite accordé de l'aide à l'Inde malgré des preuves d'informations bancaires volées. En matière de droit pénal, le Tribunal pénal fédéral a généralement refusé de fournir de l'aide si la demande est basée sur des données volées. Ce positionnement a été confirmé lorsqu'une demande grecque basée sur les données de Falciani a été rejetée. Le Ministère public de la Confédération pourrait chercher à clarifier ces conditions d'assistance, notamment en tentant d'harmoniser la politique en matière d'entraide pénale avec celle de l'assistance fiscale. Cependant, les différences fondamentales entre les deux pourraient justifier une approche plus stricte en matière d'entraide pénale. L'évolution de cette situation est à suivre.</p
