Effects of a Bioavailable Arabinoxylan-enriched White Bread Flour on Postprandial Glucose Response in Normoglycemic Subjects

The beneficial effects of soluble fibers on carbohydrate metabolism are well documented. In this regard, we tested an arabinoxylan-enriched white bread flour, obtained by a patented process by which the bran extracted from the milling process is enzymatically hydrolyzed in order to separate the soluble fraction fiber from the insoluble fiber. We recruited 24 healthy normoglycemic volunteers [Age 34-61 +/- 12.5 y; Body Mass Index (BMI) 22.1 +/- 2.5 kg/m(2); Waist circumference (WC) 84.43 +/- 8.0 cm; Fat Mass (FM) 22.7 +/- 8.0%] attending the Dietetics Outpatient Clinic of the Internal Medicine Department at IRCCS Policlinico S. Matteo Foundation, University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy. Subjects acutely consumed arabinoxylan-enriched white bread (weight: 100 g) or isoenergetic control breads, in a double-blind crossover study design. Plasma glucose levels were measured just before bread administration and 30 minutes afterwards. The 30-minute peak postprandial glucose concentrations after arabinoxylan-enriched meals were significantly lower than after the control meal (107+/-4.6 mg/dL vs. 121 +/- 5.2 mg/dL; p < 0.05). The here-reported results show how postprandial glucose responses were improved by ingestion of the arabinoxylan-enriched meal. Further studies are needed to clarify whether daily consumption of arabinoxylan-enriched bread will benefit patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

The Author studies an unknown manual for printing dated 1820 but written earlier. Technical manuals of the "Ancien Régime Typographique" often survived only in manuscript form; they belong to a very rare literary genre, precious and hard to find in European Archives and Libraries. This manuscript text , now in the National Library of Malta, was written by an Italian printer working, in the Eighteenth century, in the small island under the protection of the Knights. The Author traces and recreates the history of that printer, the equipment of his printing shop. She presents and analyses, with a critical apparatus, the major maltese editions and their paratextual elements. The original document is transcribed in full and commented with technical explanations for unusual words; the study encompasses also comparing with other manuals that leads to a social historical analysis of the text. The document is valuable and classified as an element and important witness for the construction of Printers' professional identity in the Modern Age

The paper intends to propose brief reflections on some critical still open questions , which concern the works created by the sculptor David for the episcopal basilica of Siponto and by the workshop of the archdeacon Acceptus for the same ecclesiastical building, as well as for the church-grotto of San Michele in Monte Sant'Angelo, for the cathedral of Canosa and probably also for the episcopal seat of Bari. The considerations presented arise from a comparative look at the material evidence preserved at the cited sites and are offered to the discussion with a character of still preliminary fine-tuning, referring for further in-depth analysis to the subsequent research of the author

Hyponatremia as a predictor of outcome and mortality: results from a second-level urban emergency department population

    No full text
Background Hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte disorder and it has been associated with increased mortality. Aims This study evaluated hyponatremia as a prognostic factor for severity and mortality. Methods We compared the prevalence of hyponatremia among patients who died during the year 2017 (from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2017) with the prevalence of hyponatremia among subgroups of patients, i.e. outpatients, patients hospitalized for more than 2 days and patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU). We also described the mortality rate and the prevalence of comorbidities among hyponatremic patients, according to hyponatremia degree (slight, moderate, severe), basal characteristics, comorbidities and their outcome (discharged, hospitalized or died). Results In our population of a public hospital setting, hyponatremia was present at admission in 17% of deaths, and the comparison between hyponatremic and normonatremic patients in terms of mortality confirms the hypothesis that this disorder is in anyway strictly associated with vulnerability and with a poor prognosis. Conclusions We conclude that hyponatremia is a predictive marker for a bad clinical course, therefore patients with this electrolyte disorder should be carefully monitored

From verbal to physical violence: the different severity perception of stalking behaviors

    No full text
Abstract Stalking is a global spread phenomenon consisting in harassing, annoying, unwanted, and intrusive behaviors, often considered regular in courting. These behaviors are part of the broader range of gender-based violence. In accordance with the theory of ecological systems, this study aimed to investigate the presence of gender differences in the perception of the severity of stalking actions, considering the role of the type of violence perpetrated (physical versus verbal) and the relationship between the author and victim (Resentful ex-partner, Incompetent suitor rejected, Neighbor in dispute). The results showed gender differences in the main dimensions investigated by the questionnaire (Moral Disengagement, Normlessness beliefs, Empathy, and Perception of the Severity of Stalking). In addition, the results show that the perception of severity is influenced by the type of relationship and the type of violence perpetrated, differently between men and women. Results were discussed based on the development of literature on the topic
