Heroes: Kate Fagan on Joni Mitchell (on The Music Show with Andrew Ford)
Singer, songwriter, painter, collaborator - Canadian Joni Mitchell is a wearer of many hats, including being one of the most influential female artists in the last 50 years. She developed a distinctive sound as she explored more harmonically and rhythmically complex styles, incorporated jazz, classical and R&B, working with the likes of Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. One person she inspired is musician and academic Kate Fagan, who says it's hard to call Joni's music rock, or folk, or jazz, or pop, or poetry - "it's something of all of those." Kate comes in to The Music Show to show us how Joni became "one of the great character songwriters of the late 20th century." 'A fable for now' : Kate Fagan interviews Lyn Hejinian
In July, 2014, the American poet Lyn Hejinian visited Australia to participate in two events – the ‘Women’s Writing and Environments: 2014 Contemporary Women’s Writing Association Conference’ at the State Library of Melbourne, where she headlined alongside fellow keynotes Alexis Wright, Chris Kraus and Deborah Bird Rose; and ‘Experimental’ at the University of Sydney, where she appeared alongside Carla Harryman and Barrett Watten. She also visited the Poetry and Poetics Project within the Writing and Society Research Centre at Western Sydney University, where she gave a long poetry reading followed by a conversation with poet and musician Kate Fagan. The discussion focused on several of Hejinian’s most recent works including The Book of a Thousand Eyes (Omnidawn, 2012), Saga/Circus (Omnidawn, 2008) and The Grand Piano: An Experiment in Collective Autobiography (Mode A/This Press, 2010)

This Big Big Love, Time to Come Rambling Home
Poet and singer songwriter Kate Fagan performs some songs from her new album Inner Nature
Evening Devotional
This poem appears in the music score 'Winnowing Light: for Clarinet and Marimba' published by the Australian Music Centre. The music follows Kate's poem, in dialogue with symbolism surrounding swifts and their evening flights above the clouds. Author Helen Macdonald refers to what are known as 'vesper flights,' and Kate Fagan has woven this idea into her poem with references to the Magnificat, from Evensong or evening prayers
