    No full text
Abstract: The study assessed domestic violence as predictors of delinquent behaviour among children in Kaduna State. Survey design was employed with two hundred and fifty (250) participants selected using simple random sampling technique drawn from Command Secondary School, Kachia Road, Government Day Secondary School, Kakuri in Kaduna South, and Borstal Training Institute Barnawa, Kaduna with the age ranges from 11-above years who were children both male and female. Questionnaire was used to collect data. Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Independent Sample t-test were used to test the hypotheses. Two hypotheses were tested. Hypothesis one revealed a mean and standard deviation scores for Domestic violence (M= 10.68, SD= 4.536) and delinquent behaviour (M= 12.79, SD= 3.518). Further analysis revealed a statistically significant r(248) = 0.311, P .05). Observation of the means however indicates that children from high socio-economic status families scored slightly higher on delinquent behaviour (M=12.57, SD=2.61) compared to their counterparts from the low socio-economic status families (M=12.03, SD=2.78). This was however not confirmed. We concluded and recommended that relationship between domestic violence and juvenile delinquent behaviour in Kaduna South. Parents and guardians should make sure that they give their children adequate attention at home especially in regard to incidence of violence either from the parents, relatives or peer group (friends) who they mix and mingle with. The study appraised jungle justice on the incidence of crime in Nigeria. The study however focused on perceived police legitimacy (Police effectiveness, fairness and lawfulness) as predictors of support for the administration of jungle justice on criminals. The study was conducted using ninety-two (n= 92) respondents who comprised of market women, motor park loaders (agbero) and commercial drivers. The participants were made up of 60 (65.2%) males and 32 (34.8%) females. The participants’ age ranged from 23 to 49 years with a mean age of 35.67 and a standard deviation of 7.25. Two instruments were used to obtain data: Police Legitimacy Scale and Vigilantism Support Questionnaire. A cross-sectional design was used for the study and Multiple Hierarchical Regression was used to analyze the data. Results showed that Perceived Police Effectiveness (PPE) (β = .076, t = 1.185, p>.05), entered in model 2 of the equation significantly predicted support for jungle justice. Perceived Police Effectiveness accounted for 31% variance in predicting support for jungle justice (R2Δ = .04, p> .05). Perceived Police Fairness (PPF) (β = .076, t = 1.185, p>.05), entered in model 3 of the equation significantly predicted support for jungle justice. Perceived Police Fairness (PPF) accounted for 20% variance in predicting support for jungle justice (R2Δ = .04, p> .05). Perceived Police Lawfulness (PPL) (β = .076, t = 1.185, p>.05), entered in model 4 of the equation also significantly predicted support for jungle justice. Merits and demerits of the study were stated and recommendations were made. Keywords: Crime, Fairness, Jungle justice, Legitimacy, Lawfulness, Police, Punishment

This study examined the impact of rule of law on crime prevention in Nigeria. It focused specifically on the aspect of perceived fairness. Ninety-five (95) participants were surveyed and administered with the questionnaire measure. They include forty-seven (47) males and forty-eight (48) females who are residing in the Kaduna metropolis. The selection of participants was done using convenience sampling.  The age range of the respondents ranged from 22-28 years of age with a mean of 24.94 and a standard deviation of 2.05. Two instruments were used for data collection: Fairness subscale of Attitude towards the Criminal Legal System Scale (ATCLTS) (Martin & Cohn, 2004) and criminal intention subscale of Measure of Criminal Attitudes and Associates (MCAA; Mills et al., 2002). The study used a cross-sectional design and Pearson correlation was used as the statistics. The result showed that perceived fairness showed a significant negative relationship with criminal intention (r = -.70, p< .001). It was therefore recommended that the legislative arm of government should amend certain aspects of the law that are not fair to the common man and encouraged the Nigerian justice system to be free from external influence in order to increase perceived fairness.  Keywords: Crime, Prevention, Nigeria, Perceived fairness, Rule of la

Assessment of Mental Disorder as a Predictor of Criminal Behaviours in Nigeria

The study examined mental disorder as a predictor of criminal behaviours among young adults. Sectional design was adopted and convenience sampling technique was used to draw the sample. A total of 141 participants were used. An average age of 21.50 years (SD = 2.19) was found. One hundred and seven (107) (75.9%) of all participants were male and thirty four (34) (24.1%) were female. Two instruments were used for data collection: NPD subscale of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ-4+) and antisocial behavior questionnaire (ASBQ). It was hypothesized that narcissistic personality disorder will not significantly predict antisocial behavior among young adults. Regression results showed that Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) (β = .570, t = 8.17, p< .001) is a significant predictor of Antisocial Behaviour (ASB) among young adults, therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. In Conclusion, Mental illness is a very broad concept; however, various mental illnesses have been linked to criminal behavior. This implies that individuals with narcissistic personality disorders are predisposed to criminal behaviours. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended were that the services of psychologists should be employed in the law courts to examine the mental health of offenders, to aid the jury in deciding if they should be sent to prison or a psychiatric hospital for rehabilitation. The aim of this research is investigating the personality traits as determinant of institutional misdemeanor behaviour among officer cadets of Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna. The study used both Survey and Experimental Design. A total of two hundred participants (200 officer cadets) were selected for the study through Purposive & simple convenient sampling method. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Version was used to collect Data from participants. Data collected for this research were analyzed qualitatively through simple percentage for demographic and mean of standard deviation was used for the research questions. Independent t-test was used in testing hypothesis, the result reveal that: i. There was a significant difference between Officer Cadets of NDA with misdemeanor/criminal record who scored higher on Extraversion on the Eysenck personality questionnaire revised compared to those who do not have misdemeanor/criminal record ii. There was a significant difference between Officer Cadets of NDA with misdemeanor/criminal record who scored higher on Neuroticism on the Eysenck personality questionnaire revised compared to those who do not have misdemeanor/criminal record. iii. There was a significant difference between Officer Cadets of NDA with misdemeanor/criminal record who scored higher on Psychoticism on the Eysenck personality questionnaire revised compared to those who do not have misdemeanor/criminal record.  In conclusion, the findings show that Personality is a major factor in many kinds of behavior, one of which is criminal behavior. To determine what makes a criminal “a criminal,†we must understand his/her personality. This study tries to identify different personality traits which link crim inals to their personality.
