For a semiotics of culture as a critique of culture*
The text aims at investigating the vitality of Lotman's thought, focusing on its theoretical specificities (compared to other methodological approaches), on its recurring themes, but above all on its analytical, somehow "operational" utility. In particular, the authors reflect on the critical scope of Lotman's thought and on how the traditional unveiling vocation of semiotics finds in Lotman an adequate renewal for the problems posed by the contemporary world (populisms, new media ecosystems, new forms of collective subjectivity...)
Dario Mangano, Franciscu Sedda, a cura, Simboli d’oggi. Critica dell’inflazione semiotica, Milano, Meltemi, 2023 (pp.546)
In their edited volume Simboli d’oggi. Critica dell’inflazione semiotica (2023), Dario Mangano and Franciscu Sedda address the proliferation of symbols in contemporary culture, exploring their function and transformative power. Building on the legacy of semiotic theorists like Charles S. Peirce, Ferdinand de Saussure, Roland Barthes, and Umberto Eco, the book revisits the concept of the symbol, once sidelined in semiotic studies, and analyzes its resurgence in popular discourse. Through nineteen essays, the contributors examine diverse cases — from Charly Brown and the European flag to the Gioconda and QAnon — investigating the socio-cultural processes that elevate objects, people, or phenomena to symbolic status. Central themes include the temporal dynamics of symbols, their capacity for identity construction, and their strategic use in marketing and cultural narratives. The volume not only addresses the "semiotic inflation" of symbols but also underscores their enduring relevance as tools of meaning-making in the contemporary world, offering a fresh methodological approach for understanding their evolving significance
At Different Speeds: Cancel Culture and Temporality
For a long time, Lotman’s theory of culture was read in the light
of eminently spatial criteria and metaphors: boundaries, inner and
outer space, spheres... However, Lotman’s contribution
in considering the temporal dynamics that characterise
semiospheres is fundamental. The points of attention, in Lotman's view of temporality, are in my opinion two: on the one hand, temporal rhythms differentiate and characterise
the life forms (some life forms, such as fashion, have a faster rhythm;
other life forms, such as folklore, have a slower rhythm of change).
But beyond this, the different rhythms come into conflict with each
other, because each semiosphere simultaneously hosts more than
one life form.
The contemporary topic of cancel culture is studied under this light, as a matter of temporal conflict

La semiosfera fra il pensiero e la vita
Il saggio situa il lavoro di Lotman sulla semiosfera all'interno della cultura del suo tempo e ne traccia la significatività in rapporto ai vissuti dello stesso Lotma
