The correspondence between the mathematician Francesco Brioschi (1824-1897) and Quintino Sella (1827-1884) highlights aspects of their political and cultural activity during the period of the unification of Italy. Both played a significant role not only in the ministerial commissions of public education, finance and public works, but also in local and national academies and scientific societies. The letters show their commitment to the organization of education in technical schools, universities and higher education institutions. Noteworthy was their project to create a single large national academy of mathematical, physical and natural sciences and of moral, historical and philological sciences ‒ the Lincei academy – capable of competing with European and world ones, although few scientists belived at the beginning
Among the most important periodicals in the nineteenth century, «Il Politecnico»,
as well known, made a decisive contribution to the renewal of the Italian literaryscientific
and technical culture. Right from the first year of publication, it also
showed early attention to the problem of restoration, a discipline born recently, at
the beginning of the XIX century and still in the phase of conceptual definition, as
a specific architectonical activity to make the conservation of monuments to pass
them on to the future. The topic, with no regular frequency, was dealt with in the
pages of the magazine, sometimes as the subject of specific Memories, most often
recognizable in the watermark, indirectly, in the articles on topics related to
history, antiquities and fine arts. In the «Il Politecnico», from Carlo Cattaneo
(1839) to Francesco Brioschi (1866-1868), we can see the path of Italy from the
Risorgimento towards national unity. At the same time, we can know the
evolution of the discipline theory, from the vision of the first operational
theories and experiences, aimed at restoring the ‘proper and native character’
of the monument, to be traced back to an alleged original state, to the idea of a
monument as a document of a progressive history, no longer reversible, which
is the prodrome of the concept of ‘philological restoration’, enunciated a few
years later by Camillo Boito
Connessioni energetiche sulla Via della Seta
Beyond the rhetoric of global prosperity and win-win partnerships, the Belt & Road Initiative is key to strengthening and securing China’s energy supplies. Based on this simple assumption, the author traces the “Chinese energy road” in four chapters: China and its energy needs, energy security, climate change, energy transition, by accompanying the description with anecdotes of life, been in contact with the Chinese energy institutions when he headed the Europe-China Clean Energy Center in Beijing, between 2011-2015
