The article subjects to analysis selected motifs from Zbigniew Herbert’s poem “Mr. Cogito and the Imagination” based on the draft copies of the work that are stored in the poet’s archive. An analysis of the manuscripts, which reveals a different, hidden aspect of the final text, allows for the investigation of what was omitted in the process of creation, such as the motif of Daedal and the reference to the Upanishads, and traces the development of the significant themes of the poem: a concept of identity and the notion of tautology

Inspired by the methodology of genetic criticism, this book traces the genesis of sixteen poems by Zbigniew Herbert. The author guides the reader through the world of manuscripts, which serve as an intimate space of freedom, revealing the stratification of the work and the scene of rhetoric, and indicating alternative paths of the creative process. We delve into the mysterious matter of the poet's laboratory, which uncovers the routes leading to Herbert's biography and literary influences, opening up the kaleidoscopic richness of threads still alive in the files of the Herbert Archive, preserved in the National Library of Poland. Herbert's manuscripts question the finished work, testifying to what was removed yet shaped the text equally with what entered the final version. The individual chapters of the book examine significant case studies, showing not only the process of creation of single works but also the formation of important Herbertian themes within the dynamic flow of texts composing the mosaic of genesis. The monograph also includes illustrations and a comprehensive annex with manuscript transliterations, available online

"The anatomy of joy in the archive". A destabilizing, unpredictable, and ephemeral emotion, laden with ethical dimensions, joy can also manifest as a consequence of intellectual engagement (Misrahi, Lénoir). "Pleasure, joy, happiness" are recurrent themes in the literature of scholars delving into the intricate realm of "recalcitrant" manuscripts. Drawing upon examples from Agamben, Corti, Farge, Grésillon, and Zweig, this article delineates a phenomenology of joy within archival contexts. From the anticipation of receiving the "living material" of a manuscript to the "slow and unprofitable" process of transcribing the "intimate signs" of writing, and through the act of reading where "passion and reason" intertwine, the experience of joy can astonish those who immerse themselves in the traces of others' words, within the perpetually unfolding vistas of archival papers, akin to a "universe in miniature.

A writer’s manuscripts reveal the text in statu nascendi. They represent the space in which textual identity is constructed, and reveal specific moments of interaction between the writer’s biography and the text. Herbert’s drafts and notes are a space of dialogue with himself and tradition, they contain notes on his reading and shed light on the palimpsestic dimension of the poet’s work. A key phenomenon in the dynamic of writing are the deletions, which can tell us much about the subject and his aesthetic choices. To study the drafts is to broaden the field of interpretation, to pose new questions, to multiply doubts and to unveil the face of Herbert’s work. Fornari draws on French theories of genetic criticism to present these problems with reference to specific examples from the materials in the Zbigniew Herbert archive at the National Library of Poland
