Creative Collaboration: Providing Inclusive Access to FIU Libraries\u27 Collections

The FIU Libraries Special Collections and Cataloging departments are immersed in a project to make primary source materials more accessible to the South Florida community and internationally. This presentation will demonstrate how archivists and catalogers worked collaboratively to provide access by leveraging traditional approaches and new tools to increase discoverability in Finding Aids and the library catalog. Throughout the years, the archives at FIU Libraries has collected historical records that represent the history of the Hispanic community in Miami. Although Miami is known as having a large Hispanic community, the discovery of collection material represents a challenge for non-English speakers which has led to the under use of collection materials. The archivists and catalogers have identified language as one of the barriers in locating materials in the Finding Aids. As part of the FIU Libraries larger initiative to provide equitable access to our collections, the Special Collections and Cataloging departments have decided to enhance access to collections using the original language of the community documented in addition to English. We will discuss our processes working with specific collections to provide bi-language description, multiple points of access, and full text transcription

Adopting Machine Learning at the FIU Libraries

Over the past five years, the FIU Libraries have developed and implemented various machine learning and AI technologies with the goal of improving discovery and access to materials as well as provide new methods for analysis of content. A sampling of these projects include the development of resource recommendation functionality using machine learning, which is embedded into our digital library system; the use of Microsoft\u27s Cognitive Services AI for transcription of audio files as well as translation of text in over 60 languages; the evaluation of serval AI systems and training data sets for facial recognition in archive photographs; and text analysis within a large corpus of dLOC newspapers. This presentation will provide an overview of these projects, the limitations of these technologies, the inherent issues regarding the biases baked into the decision making in algorithms and of training data sets, as well as the potential privacy issues these projects may raise. The presentation will also cover the ways the FIU Libraries have worked to mitigate these issues, in addition to the benefits these technologies have brought in terms of patron experience, technical infrastructure, and professional development

    No full text
This presentation focuses on the plan for rebuilding the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC)’s Outreach Hub at Florida International University Libraries. As a multi-institutional digital library project, dLOC provides a no-cost, public facing repository in which institutions, many of which come from one of the most climate-threatened regions of the world, can safeguard their digital collections. The presentation focuses on three goals of the new dLOC FIU Outreach Strategy: 1. To increase use and awareness of resources available on dLOC, 2. To promote creation, use, and awareness of scholarship in Caribbean Studies, and 3. To support existing partners in new/continuing initiatives. Present in the discussion of all these goals will be the continued relationship between the dLOC Outreach Hub at FIU Libraries and the dLOC Operations Hub at the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries. This presentation strives to provide continued and potential dLOC collaborators in South Florida with relevant information on how dLOC can help them achieve their own goals. The presenter is Katie Coldiron, the recently hired Outreach Program Manager for dLOC at FIU Libraries
