Guardare a Nord: contributi didattici nello studio dell’area di San Pancrazio a Cagliari
The walled city, with its wall palimpsest, its stratified urban texture and the formal-architectural identity of the intramural
structures, still represents a transversal document of the history of architecture – not only military – and the history of
restoration, with an undoubted international importance. The study integrated between research and teaching started
from the area of the Tower of San Pancrazio, which was the northern entrance to the city and has always represented
the most vulnerable part since it opened directly onto the hinterland. This is why it is one of the most stratified portions of
the city walls, from the Pisan period to the crucial nineteenth-century restorations. Based on this awareness, a systematic
scientific study of the curtain walls started in 2012. The first phase of the research involved the reorganisation of the
many historical sources and the detailed analysis of four sites: the Altamira Urban Gate, the adjacent Dusay bastion,
the ‘Seziate’ Palace and the northern St. Filippo bastion. The overall interest of this study lies in the fact that it provides
a substantial contribution to the definition of a methodology for the study of the growth and transformation of walled
cities and to the critical reconstruction of the local history of restoration, specifically referred to defence heritage
Advances in monitoring of seventh and eighth cranial nerve function during posterior fossa surgery
Objective: This study aimed to illustrate some recent advances in intraoperative monitoring of the seventh and eighth cranial nerves (i.e., direct recording of cochlear nerve action potentials [CNAPs] and facial nerve action potentials [FNAPs]). Study Design: Reports of representative cases and average postoperative results obtained in subjects submitted to cerebellopontine angle surgical procedures are examined. Results obtained in patients with direct recording techniques are compared with those obtained with the classical monitoring techniques (auditory brain stem response [ABR], electrocochleography [ECoG], facial electromyography [EMG]). Setting: The study was conducted at an Ear Nose and Throat Department, University of Verona, Verona, Italy. Intervention: Intraoperative monitoring during cerebellopontine angle surgery was performed. Results: Patients monitored with direct audiomonitoring techniques presented better postoperative auditory functions compared to patients monitored with ABR. The FNAP and EMG groups showed FN outcome that did not differ significantly. Conclusions: Intraoperative monitoring of cranial nerves furnishes a valid tool for identification of neural structures, prevention of damage, understanding of the pathophysiology of damage, and prediction of postoperative function. The fundamental prerequisite for obtaining optimal benefits from monitoring is the use of techniques of direct and continuous electrophysiologic recording with instantaneous feedback to the surgeon, such as CNAPs and FNAPs
Metodologie e strumenti per la conservazione e il riuso del patrimonio militare: la base aerea di Cagliari-Elmas | Methodologies and tools for the protection and the reuse of military sites: the Air Force Base of Cagliari-Elmas
On 28 March 1923, the Italian air force was founded as an independent service with the name of 'Arma Azzurra' (Blue Army). Fascism always held it in the maximum importance, as an Italian excellence among the national armies. In 1934, an important exhibition on Italian Aviation was held in Milan to celebrate the exceptional innovation reached in this field. In the same exhibition, some models of the modern airport were showed. The first Italian airport built according to Milan's models was the seaplane base of Cagliari, quickly transformed into a modern aviation base, completed in 1935. The historical
buildings, still preserved, show a clear futurist character together with rationalistic elements, avantgarde for the contemporary European context. The military area has very recently been decommissioned, turned into civilian use and outsourced to the company responsible for civil airport management (So.G.Aer. SpA). The University of Cagliari, together
with the local offices of the National Ministry for Cultural Heritage, is carrying out a scientific research on the ex-military area, with the specific aim of inserting the entire site in the list of protected monuments, since it represents an important witness of the Italian military history of the 20th century. The research follows the rigorous protocol of investigation generally used for historical monuments and includes the indirect analysis, through the recognition of bibliographic, archival and graphic sources, and the direct survey of the structures, carried out through photographic, architectural and material
surveys, with non-destructive diagnostic techniques. Based on the in-depth knowledge, the research drafts a first proposal for a sustainable reuse
