Talon Noir: utility of dermoscopy for differential diagnosis with respect to other acral skin growths
The oncogenic potential of human papillomavirus (HPV)
Current advances in knowledge of the biology of human papillomavirus (HPV) is reviewed. The evidence of its role in the genesis of carcinoma of the cervix is presented as a model of the oncogenic potential of HPV. A common theme of HPV prevalence, transmission and importance of cofactors is presented at the epidemiological level. This is also considered at the molecular level with the role of the E6 and E7 ORF and their interaction with P53 and Rb. Cofactor effects at this level are discussed
Juvenile pemphigus vulgaris: efficacy of moderate doses of deflazacort
A 13-year-old girl with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) had clinical features of chronic stomatitis. The histologic and immunologic findings were typical of a diagnosis of PV. Good therapeutic results were obtained with moderate doses of deflazacort, 1 mg/kg/day slowly tapered to 0.1 mg/kg every other day. The patient had no significant side effects
A case of furuncular myasis from dermatobia hominis [Un caso di miasi foruncoloide da dermatobia hominis]
A case of subdermal myasis due to dermatobia hominis is reported in a 45 year-old forestry engineer from Germany who had been in Guatemala 30 days before. The skin disorder is characterized by the presence of a nodular-ulcerative lesion, located on the forehead, painful and of hard-elastic consistence. Both the removal of the parasite, obtained by simply squeezing the lesion, and a local and systemic antibiotic treatment, led to the disappearance of the disorder in three weeks. The vital cycle of this parasite is described
New aspects of genital human papillomavirus infections [Aspetti attuali delle infezioni genitali da papillomavirus umani]
In the past decade the application of molecular biology techniques to the study of the genomic structure and function of human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has produced much new data on the epidemiology and biology of these viruses. The attention of many scientists has been captured by genital HPV mainly because: enormous increase in incidence, the broad spectrum of diseases caused by these viruses, the large asymptomatic population harbouring latent infections and the oncogenic potential of certain HPV types. General epidemiology, 'molecular epidemiology' and experimental data indicate that some HPV types are etiological agents of genital squamous cell carcinoma. HPV16 DNA has been found in more than 80% of in situ and invasive cervical carcinomas and integration of the viral DNA into the hostgenome seems to be a crucial step in HPV induced transformation. The transforming activity of HPV seems to be linked to uncontrolled expression of viral E6/E7 proteins that are able to complex with cell polypeptides (p53 and p105RB) involved in down-regulation of cell division. All this has caused radical revision of the diagnostic criteria to be used for the complete and correct management of HPV infections
A case of connective tissue naevus [Un caso di nevo connettivale]
A case of connective tissue naevus is reported. The skin lesions appeared during puberty and were widely distributed on the trunk. Histologically, the disease was characterized by a considerable increase of elastic fibres in the middermis. No fragmentation of elastic fibers was noted
