No full textNegli ultimi anni i papiri ercolanesi sono stati oggetto di una evoluzione scientifica di grande rilevanza, che prosegue nel solco di una lunga e fiorente tradizione di studi, oggi innovata e arricchita dal progresso tecnologico. Il presente volume raccoglie i contributi della prima conferenza interamente dedicata alla riflessione e al dibattito su questi aspetti della disciplina, con particolare attenzione alla cooperazione passata, presente e futura tra Italia e Germania. La partecipazione di dottorandi, giovani ricercatori e studiosi di rilievo internazionale, di provenienza e profili diversi, ha inquadrato in una prospettiva ampia e interdisciplinare il dialogo sul rapporto tra la papirologia ercolanese e le discipline affini, sulla conservazione dei papiri, sulla loro edizione e sui desiderata per il futuro

No full textIn recent decades, Herculaneum papyrology has undergone an evolution that involves not only the way of reading, interpreting and editing the texts, but also, especially, the way of reconstructing the fragmented rolls. This increasingly raises methodological questions concerning the presentation of results in the editions and the graphical representation of the reconstruction. This paper aims to present some reflections on these two aspects. As for the first one, accuracy and usability of the editions of reconstructed rolls will be taken in consideration, giving particular attention to the numbering of the columns and to the presentation of text coming from papyri characterized by complex stratigraphy.
Then, moving to the second point, after some reflections on the so-called maquettes, we
will present a new software, currently being developed, for the virtual reconstruction of
papyri with complex stratigraphy

No full textThis contribution presents several new readings and a new interpretation of PHerc. 1044, frr. 2, 49 and 3 Gallo (Vita Philonidis). These fragments were long considered unconnected because an Oxonian facsimile represented them misleadingly, and they have been only recently joined by Assante. A new analysis of this text led me to diverge from the interpretation given by the previous editors and to identify a strongly Epicurean context in which the author of the Vita intentionally frames Philonides of Laodiceia

No full textThe paper will present a new interpretation of PHerc. 1044, fr. 7 Gallo, which has attracted the attention of several scholars, for it enlightens us on the impressive productivity of Epicurean philology even in areas far from the Kepos. The fragment presents both syntactical and exegetical difficulties, which have led scholars to come up with different solutions and interpretations. However, almost all scholars who have dealt with it started from the idea that it contains a list of Philonides’ writings. I will suggest that only some of the works mentioned can be attributed to Philonides and that in these lines the author of the Vita is correcting and supplementing its source

No full textThe biographical work on Philonides of Laodikeia on the Sea in Syria (P. Herc. 1044+1715+1746) is not merely a source of information about the life of the philosopher, it also bears witness to both well-known and lesser-known aspects of Hellenistic history and civilization, not to mention the fact that it is an extremely rare and precious example of Hellenistic biography. This paper presents a new edition of a passage of the text in which references to vocabulary and procedures of Greek manumission can be detected, which suggest a parallel with papyrological and epigraphic documentary sources. This parallelism allows, in turn, to understand better the text of the papyrus and to supplement a technical term referring to relatives’ consent to the manumission of slaves

No full textThis paper aims to investigate the complex problem of stratigraphy in Herculaneum papyri. Virtual models will represent examples of sovrapposti and sottoposti with the goal of allowing us to draw logical conclusions, which will have universal validity when reconstructing papyri in which multiple layers occur. This will allow the prediction, to a certain extent, of the trend of the stratigraphy in a given piece. Finally a specific case will be presented (PHerc. 1746, cr 2)

No full textLa riproduzione fotografica dei papiri di Ercolano, a causa del loro particolare stato di conservazione, è stata ed è tuttora un’importante sfida, volta non soltanto a testimoniare fedelmente le condizioni dei rotoli, ma anche e soprattutto a migliorarne la leggibilità e a supportarne lo studio. Fin dagli anni immediatamente successivi all’invenzione della fotografia, numerosi progetti di riproduzione si sono susseguiti. In particolare, l’applicazione di tecniche innovative negli ultimi decenni fa dei papiri ercolanesi un utile exemplum per la digitalizzazione fotografica e la valorizzazione di differenti collezioni manoscritte di tutte le epoche
