Illicit trades and smuggling activities on the island of Stromboli, 1808–1816: gender roles during a commercial crisis
This article examines the impact of the Continental Blockade upon a local fishing and agricultural economy in the Mediterranean by focusing on the illicit trades that flourished on Stromboli. The island became a strategic location for smuggling between the warring kingdoms of British allied Naples and French ruled Sicily. This paper argues that the Blockade allowed Stromboli to join the network of maritime traffic that had been dominated by the two biggest islands in the archipelago. Although equally integrated into agriculture and fishing, women participated in the fraudulent sale of prize goods but were excluded from large-scale smuggling operations.L'étude examine l'impact du Blocus continental sur l'économie locale de la pêche et de l'agriculture en Méditerranée.

A two-sided kingdom: a Sicily of export and urban grain supply
The Sicilian provisioning system sought to guarantee both the subsistence of cities and the income of the great aristocratic landowners interested in the wheat market. A set of economic mechanisms, social practices and political conflicts unfolded around the urban Annonas, dealing with wheat and flour distribution, bread production, contracts for the procurement of supplies, and the price system of the mete, run by political élites. North-eastern Sicily was exclusively consumer, while the west central area produced surpluses for the foreign market and for the rest of the island, including the capital Palermo, and Messina, a rich and hungry city. The centralized office of the Maestro Portulano granted exports through the fiscal and commercial infrastructure of the caricatori, and export permits were traded in a highly dynamic speculative market
Women and movable goods in a maritime border economy in 19th century Sicily (Aeolian Islands)
This chapter focuses on women possessing material goods, and on their informal administration, use, production, maintenance, and transformation in a small Sicilian island, Stromboli in the Aeolian Archipelago, in the first half of the 19th century. To explore this diverse social practices such as work, assistance, personal and familial relationships, and the informal management of money in transactions should all be taken into account. In areas such as Southern Italy, where Roman Law heritage predominated in Medieval and Early Modern age, women’s property rights were quite strong: although they were subject to special restrictions, they enjoyed, at the same time, special protections, as in the case of the dowry system. The new Bourbon Civil Code enacted under the Restoration was quite flexible and allowed to balance the transmission of property to women and men. Archival sources such as judicial proceedings, marriage contracts, wills and post-mortem inventories give the possibility to shed some light on the everyday life of women of the lower classes and on their relationship with movable goods, personal objects, household goods, and working tools. Women in Stromboli owned and used objects for agricultural and fishing activities and fully participated to the economic life of the island with its licit and illicit trades

Scansar le frodi. Prede corsare nella Sicilia del decennio inglese (1808-1813)
This essay discusses the topic of fraud linked to the prizes taken by corsairs in the Mediterranean during the period of the Continental Blockade, from the viewpoint of the Kingdom of Sicily, where the Bourbon court was sheltering under the English protectorate. The Tribunale delle prede (1808-1813) judged the legitimacy of the prizes taken by armed Sicilian corsair vessels from ships flying enemy or neutral flags, in a complex juridical framework which also involved the Health and Police authorities, at a time when in the rest of Europe similar institutions were being created. The documents produced by the Tribunale offer a penetrating insight into the dynamics of the fraud and into the practices, set up by the parties involved (judges, ship-owners, corsair captains and crews, merchants, buyers, consuls and official port authorities) which governed the capture, commercialization and evaluation of the prizes. The economy of fraud was not in conflict with the regular economy, but rather a part of it. Corsairing, for its institutional, juridical, diplomatic, political and economic aspects, became a paradigm of commerce, protected by the country of origin and hostile to rivals; and fraud was just one of its possible options
