Dimensions. d= 4–7 mm, juvenile around 2.5 mm; s=32–48 (+s), juvenile 24. Description. Phaceloid corallum; corallites circular in outline; costosepta compact, straight; S1 and some of S2 reach center of calice, where their inner ends may fuse with trabecular or substyliform columella; remaining septa alternate in length and thickness; anastomoses common; wall septothecal. Remarks. According to Morycowa & Roniewicz (1990: 168) as well as based on the study of topotypes by the author, Cladophyllia furcifera Roemer has 3 cycles of septa in 6 systems, with the beginning of a fourth one. However, in the Jamaican specimens the number of septa can be slightly larger, corresponding to 4 complete cycles in 6 systems, but otherwise they agree well with Cladophyllia furcifera Roemer, 1888. Type locality of species. Albian of Texas. Distribution. Upper Aptian-Lower Albian of Mexico and northern Spain, Albian of Texas, Maastrichtian of Jamaica (this paper). New Material. Postcolonial writers. An attempt to identify the work of Astrid Roemer

Teza. Wyniki i wnioski. Astrid Roemer, a writer from Suriname who has lived in the Netherlands for many years, belongs to the so-called postcolonial writers. Literary scholars point at the difficulty in determining the identity of such writers. The question of assigning Astrid Roemer to a particular generation of immigrants is also problematic. The writer addresses her works to black women although she creates them in Dutch, which in Suriname exclusively is an official language. Thus, her novels are read by a small percentage of the community. In the article the author puts forward the thesis that Astrid Roemer's works should be included in multicultural literature. The concepts discussed. The author refers to the sociological concept of the first and second generation of immigrants as well as the historical and literary study of Urszula Topolska devoted to writers with double cultural roots who create their works in Dutch. He also recalls the concept of transculturalism of Wolfgang Welsch and the multicultural identity of Jerzy Nikitorowicz. Results and conclusions. Both in the biography and in the literary output of Astrid Roemer one can find signs of transculturalism and cultural hybridization. Originality / cognitive value of the approach. Astrid Roemer is a laureate of the P. C. Hooft Award, the Dutch state prize, considered the most important literary prize in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, she is a niche author. Her name was only mentioned once in the textbook for learning Dutch literature

Anatomical distribution of synovitis in knee osteoarthritis and its association with joint effusion assessed on non-enhanced and contrast-enhanced MRI

Purpose: To describe the anatomical distribution of synovitis and its association with joint effusion on non-enhanced and contrast-enhanced (CE) MRI in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).Methods: Baseline MRI was performed at 1.5 T using axial proton density (PD)-weighted (w) fat suppressed (fs) and axial and sagittal T1-w fs CE sequences. Synovial enhancement was scored in nine articular subregions. Maximum synovial enhancement was grouped as absent (0), equivocal (1) and definite (2 and 3). Effusion was scored from 0 to 3 on the axial sequences. We described the anatomical distribution of synovitis, its association with effusion and compared assessment of effusion on T1-w fs CE and PD fs sequences. Results: 111 subjects were included and examined by MRI. 89.2% of knees exhibited at least one subregion with a minimum grade 2 and 39.6% at the maximum of a grade 3. The commonest sites for definite synovitis were posterior to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in 71.2% and in the suprapatellar region in 59.5% of all knees. On T1-w fs CE, 73.0% of knees showed any effusion. Definite synovitis in at least one location was present in 96.3% knees with an effusion and in 70.0% without an effusion. Higher grades of effusion were scored on the PD fs sequence. Conclusion: Definite synovitis was present in the majority of knees with or without effusion with the commonest sites being posterior to the PCL and in the suprapatellar recess. Joint effusion as measured on PD fs images does not only represent effusion but also synovial thickening.<br/

A Study of Roemer\u27s Method for Determining the Velocity of Light

    No full text
Data taken by the author during August to December 1988 on eclipses of the first major satellite of Jupiter are compared with data taken by Roemer and Picard 300 years ago. Both sets of data are analyzed by the same method, or as nearly the same as possible, to determine whether the speed of light has changed. The conclusion depends on, and is rather sensitive to, whether or not Io\u27s mean daily motion has changed in the 300 years

    Value and Politics

A brief, historical review of the study of the interdependency between politics and economic distribution is offered. While the impact of economic interests on politics has been acknowledged for thousands of years, and the impact of politics on distribution for hundreds, it is only in the last thirty years that formal models of the interdependency between economic distribution and politics have been formulated. A general model of political-economic equilibrium is proposed, in which political competition and economic distribution jointly determine each other. Several examples are given. The author proposes that political economy, conceived of as studying this process of joint determination, is in its infancy.Political-economic equilibrium
