    Sexual orientation discrimination in hiring

    No full text
Little research has been done to examine discrimination against gays and lesbians in the labor market. Badgett (1995) conducted the only previous study investigating labor market outcomes of gays and lesbians using a random data set. However, due to the structure of the data, the wage differential between heterosexuals and gays and lesbians that is found can not be directly assigned to employer discrimination. Some gays and lesbians might deploy passing strategies to hide their sexual orientation on the workplace which lower their productivity. Consequently, the measured wage differential is a conglomerate of employer discrimination against "out" workers and lower productivity of those employees trying to conceal their sexual orientation. To investigate whether lesbians’ unfavorable labor market outcomes are due to discrimination or result from passing strategies, a labor market experiment is conducted. Job applications of candidates, who are equivalent in their human capital but differ in their sexual orientation are sent out in response to job advertisements. Furthermore, since it has been suggested that gender non-conformity is one of the reasons why lesbians are disliked, the applicants differ in their perceived gender identity. While results show a strong negative effect for lesbian orientation, gender identity does not have a significant overall impact on hiring chances.sex-discrimination; experimental economics; sexual orientation

Nonlinear maneuver autopilot for the F-15 aircraft

    No full text
A methodology is described for the development of flight test trajectory control laws based on singular perturbation methodology and nonlinear dynamic modeling. The control design methodology is applied to a detailed nonlinear six degree-of-freedom simulation of the F-15 and results for a level accelerations, pushover/pullup maneuver, zoom and pushover maneuver, excess thrust windup turn, constant thrust windup turn, and a constant dynamic pressure/constant load factor trajectory are presented

Estudo de viabilidade de uma representação em PDDL do teste de integração. Os exemplos aplicados na modelagem são sistemas procedimentais retirados de Myers (2016). Os cenários 1 e 2 representam a estratégia top-down. Os cenários 3 e 4 representam a estratégia bottom-up. Os planos indicam uma ordenação de integração e teste das unidades conforme estabelecido pelas estratégias de integração. Referência Myers, G. J., Sandler, C., & Badgett, T. (2011). The experiences of male gay business owners in the UK

    No full text
The article reports on a qualitative study of the motivations for and experiences of business ownership amongst 11 male gay entrepreneurs in the UK. Included in this analysis is a comparison with issues identified throughout the extant literature for other minority groups, particularly women. Corroborating previous studies, the male-gay-owned firms studied here were concentrated in the service sector and catered to diverse markets. While homophobia is reported in both employment and business ownership it is indirect and implicit rather than direct discrimination or harassment and is not cited as an entrepreneurial motivator. The findings are of importance insofar as they provide new knowledge and consequently, further our understanding of the diverse phenomena of entrepreneurship. Further, the article illustrates that heteronormativity and the gendered nature of most employment contexts also extends to the entrepreneurship domain. <br/

Observation of Top Quark Production in ¯pp Collisions with the CDF Detector at Fermilab

    No full text
We establish the existence of the top quark using a 67 pb \Gamma1 data sample of ¯ pp collisions at p s = 1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Employing techniques similar to those we previously published, we observe a signal consistent with t ¯ t decay to WWb ¯ b, but inconsistent with the background prediction by 4:8oe. Additional evidence for the top quark is provided by a peak in the reconstructed mass distribution. We measure the top quark mass to be 176 \Sigma 8(stat:) \Sigma 10(sys:) GeV/c 2 , and the t ¯ t production cross section to be 6:8 +3:6 \Gamma2:4 pb. The CDF Collaboration F. Abe, 14 H. Forming Participant Teams in Simulation Games

    No full text
Several options are available to administrators in forming participant teams in simulation gaming. These options include: (1) random selection, (2) participant selection, and (3) balanced-selection procedures. The key evaluation criteria in choosing a selection strategy include: (1) competitiveness, (2) peer relations, and (3) realism. This paper postulates that balanced- selection procedures yield significant advantages as compared to alternative methods
