The city of care. Strategies to design healthier places

    No full text
The major challenges facing the planet, such as extreme poverty, climate change, environmental degradation and health crises, have pushed the UN member countries to include cities among the key players of the Sustainable Development Goals to find common solutions. COVID-19 pandemic impact has increased the vulnerability perception, not only of the weakest sectors of the population such as slum dwellers, persons with disabilities, elders, migrants and refugees, women and children, but also a general vulnerability of cities and megacities, which proved particularly inadequate to prevent contagion diffusion and to provide healthy psychophysical conditions. At the same time, looking to the pandemic in a better perspective, COVID-19 seems to re-balance the design role, returning to consider it as one of the most effective tools to solve the real problems of a society, beyond an approach often too much connected to stylistic and aesthetic elements. The lesson learned is the need for global cooperation and solidarity for a transition to a healthier and more sustainable world, which should take into account the concept of health as a fundamental human right. The book explores care as a transition strategy to be addressed to bodies, minds, cities and nature. Endorsing the care system as a female knowledge based on complexity, flexibility, management of the unexpected, sense of responsibility, the project culture can extract this paradigm from the domestic perimeter, bring it outside and make it accessible to all in work, politics, relationships, places and communities

Designing behaviours for well-being spaces. How disruptive approaches can improve living conditions

Spaces and their views are changing. The perception of physical and mental well-being is also shifting, especially because of the pandemic. We are experiencing a transitional time where new needs and requirements emerge, affecting human behaviour and the space definition at the macro and micro levels. New dynamics and perceptions are recognized, leading architects and designers to focus on studying and applying innovative methods. The book explores the radical transformation of living and working spaces, in which the hybridization of interior and exterior requires a new vision able to interpret renewed people’s behaviours and needs, a challenging issue for the design discipline that has a multidisciplinary nature as well as a multiscale approach for both research and practice. Many examples today demonstrate the importance of the therapeutic contribution of architecture and design, to redevelop places of hospitality and care, and create environments in which there is a deep harmony of space, light, and beauty. The interest in research concerning the quality of life has also increased a lot of studies on the complex question of the environmental perception and the importance of natural stimuli for health in interiors, in which the physiological effects of light and colour are fundamental to balance the of human beings’ equilibrium. In the book, we present testimonies of international researchers and designers who propose disruptive scenarios and methodologies to improve wellbeing and mental health conditions overall life quality at the urban and personal living level through several examples: the city and the relations with the environment, commercial and hospitality areas, personal spaces, as well as outer space, in microgravity and confined environment, where the astronauts’ experience living in confined environments can be compared to the domestic space and office interiors. Our ambition is to re-launch an aesthetic, sustainable, design-based approach to improve dwelling conditions, trying to implement care into different well-being dimensions – mental, physical, social, and global – looking at the new people’s behaviours, or even, generating new behaviours, through desig

The relevance of color in post COVID-19 interior design

The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of thoughtful use of colors in post COVID-19 interior design and architecture, through the analysis of relevant case studies that challenge the definition of residential, work and hospitality spaces. Houses used to provide a private retreat from working and social activities, but in 2020 they abruptly took on new functions that once were prerogative of hotels and workspaces. This resulted in an extreme blurring of private and public spaces in the home, that can potentially have detrimental effects on the mental health and well-being of its occupants. Reconsidering essential elements of design practices, such as the chromatic definition and acoustics, could therefore help soothing the popular insecurities of the fruition of public places, well remark the role of private ones and further define new hybrid spaces, as shown by the research “Living, Working and Traveling”, curated by E. Elgani and F. Scullica
