    Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia

    The most recent clinical trials on adult acute lymphoid leukaemia (ALL) have shown complete remission and disease-free survival (DFS) rates of 80-85% and 30-40%, respectively (Annino, et al, Durrant, et al, Kantarjian, et al, Larson, et al, Ribera, et al, Rowe). Intensified consolidation, particularly with high-dose methotrexate and high-dose cytarabine, may be one of the reasons for the improved outcome in recent series (Bassan and Hoelzer, Hoelzer and Gokbuget, Kebriaei and Larson). In addition, risk-adapted and subtype-oriented therapy may have contributed to this better outcome. However, the long term outcome of adult patients is still dismal, with approximately one third of the cases only being cured. At present, therapeutic options include conventional chemotherapy (CHT), high dose therapy with autologous and, especially, allogeneic stem cells transplantation (SCT) and, for certain subsets, such as BCR-ABL1+ ALL, specific targeted therapy (Piccaluga, et al). Although SCT has been used in adult ALL for more than 20 years, its role remains controversial as demonstrated by conflicting results in various studies. Previous casecontrolled studies did not show that allogeneic SCT (alloSCT) provided any advantage over CHT (Horowitz, et al, Zhang, et al) while in some studies there was an advantage, but restricted to young adults (Oh, et al). The number of controlled published or ongoing trials is remarkably small and some of them did not include both standard-risk and high-risk patients. Thus, it is difficult to draw definitive conclusions from their results. In fact, while some authors did not report any differences between alloSCT and chemotherapy or autologous SCT (ASCT)(Gupta, et al, Labar, et al), others only found differences favouring allogeneic SCT in standard risk (Goldstone, et al) or high-risk ALL patients (Sebban, et al, Thiebaut, et al, Thomas, et al).     Follicular lymphoma: still six characters in search of an author?

    Follicular lymphoma (FL) is regarded as a distinct entity in the literature as well as in the 2008 edition of the WHO classification of tumours of haematopoietic and lymphoid tissues.Nevertheless, there are still several issues that are matters of controversy such as the grading system or the exact biological location of grade 3B FL. This makes FL somewhat like the Six characters in search of an author of Pirandello's comedy. Here, we revise the morphology and pathobiology of FL by highlighting both the areas remaining critical and future perspectives. This review was inspired by the reappraisal of Professor Lennert's personal archive that represents a unique legacy for the entire scientific community

    From knowledge to impact. An investigation of the commercial outcomes of academic engagement with industry

    The multifaceted issues regarding university-industry relations are an increasing focus of attention of both scholars and practitioners, as a means of enhancing current knowledge transfer practices and policies. One of the central questions is whether and how the mechanisms underlying different types of university-industry collaborations (collaborative research, contract research, consulting) influence universities’ research commercialisation outcomes (patenting, licensing, spin-off generation). Results of six negative binomial models in Generalized Estimating Equations based on longitudinal panel data on Italian universities, reveal that while collaborative research with industry leads to an increase in patenting activities and spin-off generation, contract research and consulting boost licensing opportunities. Results also reveal complementarities between different types of university-industry linkages, fostering all the types of research commercialisation outcomes. Managerial and policy implications are discussed at the end of this paper

    Operational challenges and ST's proposed solutions to improve collaboration between IP and R&D in innovation processes

    The implementation of a change in IP strategy represents a challenging task for firms, because organizational resources and capabilities (procedures, routines, and know-how) that are required in the new strategic context may be lacking. This article examines the operational solutions adopted by the semiconductor manufacturer STMicroelectronics to successfully accomplish an IP strategy shift. It shows how the implementation of the new strategic approach required a stricter cross-functional integration between IP and R&D through the arrangement of cross-functional teams, the development of proper IP management procedures, and the diffusion of an IP culture throughout the organization. © 2013 by The Regents of the University of California.     Universities and Intellectual Property Rights in Southern European Countries

    This paper analyses and discusses the patenting activity of Public Research Organizations (PROs) in Southern European countries. Despite the importance of the topic, studies about the European experience are rare. By using an original database of “American” (USPTO) and “European” (EPO) patents held by PROs in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece, we observe that the number of university patents in these countries has not increased dramatically during the last years, despite a growing interest at both European and national level during the same period. However, differences do exist among countries in terms of number of granted patents and regulative frameworks. With regard to PROs patenting strategies, we argue that PROs should be progressively able to adopt a “balanced” approach, in order to achieve co-existence between the traditional mechanisms of the so-called “open research system” and the more recent concerns about intellectual property protection, technology transfer and regional development
