Letter from C. J. Murphy to Attorney General Langer Regarding E. F. Meier, September 25, 1919
Letter dated September 25, 1919 from C. J. Murphy, attorney for North Dakota (ND) for the United States Railroad Administration, to ND Attorney General William Langer, regarding recently dismissed railroad employee E. F. Meier. This letter is a reply to Langer\u27s letter of September 16, and outlines Meier\u27s activity regarding enforcement of prohibition law. Murphy writes that Meier appointed himself a sort of detective but a poor grade one, who on suspicion opened and separated shipments to a local druggist named Knoll, confiscating medicines that contained alcohol, causing problems for Knoll.

In lieu of the planned running of the Harris line, Murphy reaffirms his willingness to give military assistance if it became necessary to secure Ohio's northern border. Governor Mason and W. Lucas Gov & Comd in chief, D Sir, As the period is near at hand when you prepare to run Harris line, I take the liberty of again reassuring the tender of my services to you in such capacity as you may deem fit. Affirming you of my most sincere endeavors to aid you in the protection of your view towards the final adjustment of the interesting question which agitates this people. The late outrage at Toledo, committed under the eye of Gov. Mason himself has incited in the heart of community feelings of indignation not easily described. At which time with hardly we eradicate. But they will stand by you through good & through evil … And the efforts of W. Thos. Morris & others to make it a political question and as vain & … as they are weak … I have the Honor to be … Yours … W. L. Murph
