Hybrid automata dicretising agents for formal modelling of robots

    No full text
Some of the fundamental capabilities required by autonomous vehicles and systems for their intelligent decision making are: modelling of the environment and forming data abstractions for symbolic, logic based reasoning. The paper formulates a discrete agent framework that abstracts and controls a hybrid system that is a composition of hybrid automata modelled continuous individual processes. Theoretical foundations are laid down for a class of general model composition agents (MCAs) with an advanced subclass of rational physical agents (RPAs). We define MCAs as the most basic structures for the description of complex autonomous robotic systems. The RPA’s have logic based decision making that is obtained by an extension of the hybrid systems concepts using a set of abstractions. The theory presented helps the creation of robots with reliable performance and safe operation in their environment. The paper emphasizes the abstraction aspects of the overall hybrid system that emerges from parallel composition of sets of RPAs and MCAs

Haas-Molnar Continued Fractions and Metric Diophantine Approximation.

Haas–Molnar maps are a family of maps of the unit interval introduced by A. Haas and D. Molnar. They include the regular continued fraction map and A. Renyi’s backward continued fraction map as important special cases. As shown by Haas and Molnar, it is possible to extend the theory of metric diophantine approximation, already well developed for the Gauss continued fraction map, to the class of Haas–Molnar maps. In particular, for a real number x, if (p n /q n )n≥1 denotes its sequence of regular continued fraction convergents, set θ n (x) = q 2n|x − p n /q n |, n = 1, 2.... The metric behaviour of the Cesàro averages of the sequence (θ n (x))n≥1 has been studied by a number of authors. Haas and Molnar have extended this study to the analogues of the sequence (θ n (x))n≥1 for the Haas–Molnar family of continued fraction expansions. In this paper we extend the study of (θkn(x))({\theta _{{k_n}}}(x))n≥1 for certain sequences (k n )n≥1, initiated by the second named author, to Haas–Molnar maps

Gender and resilience of the elderly in transitioning to a nursing home

    Get PDF
The master\u27s thesis covers a qualitative and quantitative analysis of gender related resilience of the elderly and the success of transition to a nursing home. The purpose of the paper is to look into the mechanisms that help older persons cope with life changes, risks and losses. In addition, the paper examines how resilient the elderly are in relation to gender, and how that affects the success of transition to a nursing home. The applied methods of data collection were a semi-structured interview and a questionnaire. Ten interviews and questionnaires were conducted among the older persons who had moved to a nursing home in the Podravje region in the year prior to conducting the survey. The key finding of the paper is that gender plays a major role in reference to resilience and the success of transition to a nursing home. Accordingly, the paper establishes that women use different coping mechanisms when facing life\u27s hardships. Compared to men, women are more resilient and make more successful transition to a nursing home. The results with regard to coping with life changes and transitions, risks and losses indicate that women rely on social support systems to cope with life\u27s adversities, whereas men rely more on individual support systems

Freedom, necessity, and the knowledge of God in conversation with Karl Barth and Thomas F. Torrance

"Paul D. Molnar discusses issues related to the concepts of freedom and necessity in trinitarian doctrine. He considers the implications of "non-conceptual knowledge of God" by comparing the approaches of Karl Rahner and T. F. Torrance. He also reconsiders T. F. Torrance’s "new" natural theology and illustrates why Christology must be central when discussing liberation theology. Further, he explores Catholic and Protestant relations by comparing the views of Elizabeth Johnson, Walter Kasper and Karl Barth, as well as relations among Christians, Jews and Muslims by considering whether it is appropriate to claim that all three religions should be understood to be united under the concept of monotheism. Finally, he probes the controversial issues of how to name God in a way that underscores the full equality of women and men and how to understand "universalism" by placing Torrance and David Bentley Hart into conversation on that subject.
