Photocatalytic active tiles: a confirmed industrial reality facing a new challenge with LED lighting

Environmental purification is a necessary aspect of scientific research to improve human life quality. Semiconductor photocatalysis, in particular TiO2 in the anatase form, was intensively investigated for its application to environmental pollutants degradation. A TiO2 photocatalyst that exhibits high activity for the oxidation of VOCs offers an economically and technically practical means to clean air and water. As secondary organic aerosols SOA represents one of the main PM constituents, the ability to break down its precursors would certainly lead to a reduction of PM concentration in the air. In literature, several studies propose linear correlations between NOx and PM10 values. Consequently, NOx degradation immediately contributes to PM reduction. New industrially produced photocatalytic porcelaingrés tiles provide very good photocatalytic performance, but also meet standard requirements with respect to hardness, lack of porosity, vitrified surface and durability. In the preparation, a commercial micro-TiO2 was employed to avoid the use of traditional nano-TiO2 and face no drawbacks due to the possible nanorisks of nanopowders. Unfortunately, TiO2 strongly suffers from the low photocatalytic activity if it is used under visible light and not under UV light. Among the various possible modifications, the surface decoration with metal or metal oxides NPs can be a good strategy to increase the potential of TiO2 in the visible range. A sonochemical method that exploits the use of high-energy ultrasounds is here suggested to obtain this surface decoration. Samples were tested on the photodegradation of NOx, toluene and acetone in gas phase systems, using both UV and LED lamps

Pregnancy is a condition characterized by various physiological modifications (placentary and ovarian hormones release) that influence various organic districts, including the oral district. In this review were re-examined the rules about the execution of dental services with the relative indications and contraindications during the different phases of pregnancy, the use of the ionizing radiations and the pharmacologic therapy during pregnancy, considering the metabolic, anatomical haemodinamic modifications to which the gestant is exposed during this condition and considering the various parameters related to it: the pharmacokinetic modifications, the drug toxicity based on its teratogenic potential, indications, side effects and specific effects of drugs administrated, the toxicological aspects of dental amalgams and the use of the local anaesthetics during pregnancy. The authors conclude that pregnancy is not a contraindication for the dental treatment and existing an increase of oral diseases, the woman must be exposed to more frequent controls

To investigate the effects of treatment with Myo-inositol (an insulin sensitizing drug), on circulating insulin, glucose tolerance, ovulation and serum androgens concentrations in women with the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Forty-two women with PCOS were treated in a double-blind trial with Myo-inositol plus folic acid or folic acid alone as placebo. In the group treated with Myo-inositol the serum total testosterone decreased from 99.5 +/- 7 to 34.8 +/- 4.3 ng/dl (placebo group: from 116.8 +/- 15 to 109 +/- 7.5 ng/dl; P=0.003), and serum free testosterone from 0.85 +/- 0.1 to 0.24 +/- 0.33 ng/dl (placebo group: from 0.89 +/- 0.12 to 0.85 +/- 0.13 ng/dl; P=0.01). Plasma triglycerides decreased from 195 +/- 20 to 95 +/- 17 mg/dl (placebo group: from 166 +/- 21 to 148 +/- 09 mg/dl; P=0.001). Systolic blood pressure decreased from 131 +/- 2 to 127 +/- 2 mmHg (placebo group: from 128 +/- 1 to 130 +/- 1 mmHg; P=0.002). Diastolic blood pressure decreased from 88 +/- 1 to 82 +/- 3 mmHg (placebo group: from 86 +/- 1 to 90 +/- 1 mmHg; P=0.001). The area under the plasma insulin curve after oral administration of glucose decreased from 8.54 +/- 0.149 to 5.535 +/- 1.792 mu U/ml/min (placebo group: from 8.903 +/- 1.276 to 9.1 +/- 1.162 mu U/ml/min; P=0.03). The index of composite whole body insulin sensitivity (ISIcomp) increased from 2.80 +/- 0.35 to 5.05 +/- 0.59 mg-2/dl-2 (placebo group: from 3.23 +/- 0.48 to 2.81 +/- 0.54 mg-2/dl-2; P < 0.002). 16 out of 23 women of Myo-inositol group ovulated (4 out of 19 in placebo group). Treatment of PCOS patients with Myo-inositol provided a decreasing of circulating insulin and serum total testosterone as well as an improvement in metabolic factors

Stomatological approach to Sjogren's syndrome: diagnosis, management and therapeutical timing

Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic multisystem autoimmune disease characterized by the exocrine glands inflammation, with subsequent hypofunction. More frequently lachrymal and salivary glands are interested with subsequent xerophthalmia and xerostomia. Sjogren's syndrome can be present in an idiopathic type or in association with other autoimmune diseases as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, schlerodermia, etc. It interests mainly the women (with a ratio F:M=9:1) with an age between 40 and 60 years old. The disease prevalence varies from 0.4% to 4.8%. The glandular lesions determine in the time a volume reduction and a secretum quality alteration. The most frequent oral manifestations are xerostomia, that allows the establishment of caries, gingivitises, periodontal disease and oral candidiasis. The aim of this work was to perform a thorough review of the literature on Sjogren's syndrome, illustrating the most internationally accredited diagnostic criteria, the patient's management and therapeutical approach in the odontostomatological discipline. The Authors conclude that it doesn't exist a resolutive treatment of the disease. The therapy is only palliative, and is turned to the treatment of xerostomia and xerophthalmia, through systemic and aspecific sialogogues drugs. From the odontostomatological point of view, particularly useful results the domiciliary and professional oral hygiene to contrast the xerostomia effect on the oral structures

Propolis is one of the few natural remedies that have maintained its popularity over a long period of timePropolis is bee-produced substance with pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. It is an ingredient of many drugs; it is added to toothpastes as a prophylactic component for periodontal diseases.. The aim of this study is to investigate the antimicrobial properties of propolis in dentistry
