Qrayeh Rural Tourism Strategy - UNDP mechanisms for social stability
The development of this strategy comes within the process of the Mechanisms for
Social Stability (MSS), a joint project that, since 2014, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been working on in partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs (MoSA) all over Lebanon.
Through the MSS, UNDP aims at providing a safe, common space for community groups to discuss their concerns, and to develop strategic mechanisms, in partnership with the municipalities, to prevent and reduce tensions. Funded by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and with the technical support of NAHNOO Organization, the project was implemented in Qrayeh during 2017 – 2019.
The MSS local working group (LWG), established within the MSS process, identified their
strategic goal, within MSS, to advance the following: “Qrayeh has the human and technical
resources to develop its proper rural tourism sector”. Accordingly, LWG developed a mechanism to reach the expected change through a rural tourism action plan. A strategic vision that if the village succeeds in implementing by equipping local families with the necessary skills, and organizing activities that attract visitors, then the community will be brought together more often, social cohesion with neighboring communities will be fostered, and basic family income will be improved. An action plan with specific objectives and relevant activities were, therefore, drafted to guide the process towards achieving the MSS goal.
In this context and with the support and expertise of Dr. Farah Makki from NAHNOO, the LWG
developed the rural tourism strategy by adopting a participatory approach that engaged all
concerned parties of the local community in Qrayeh. The process followed four main phases
including capacity building, mapping, designing and promoting. In addition, an action plan
2019 -2022, with eight strategic goals, was outlined to guide local actors in defining a new
competitive rural destination in Qrayeh.
Currently, and after launching a successful piloting event that hosted more than 250 persons
from the village and the neighboring communities in southern region, the Rural Tourism
Committee (MSS LWG) will be working closely, and in partnership with the municipality
of Qrayeh, a key partner in the process, to promote the strategy, network with private and
public stakeholders including ministries as well as connect with potential actors for funding
opportunities. Eventually, the proper management plan of this significant initiative is expected
to promote social stability in the village and move towards the vision that the community
developed earlier for Qrayeh.

« Culture as a transformational pathway for a just transition - Sdg 13 » Chapter 4 of the Voices of Culture Structured Dialogue report with the EU Commission on “culture and the sustainable development goals”.
« Karmouz SAWP Culture Walks report » - a methodological report on participatory Culture-led mapping for urban regeneration.
“Culture Walks” is the first phase of SAWP - Spaces for
Arts, Welfare and Progress- a strategy conducted within a
partnership between Urbego and ElMadina and supported by
the Tandem Shaml and Idea Camp programs. This collaboration
project between Europe and the Arab world worked on exploring
new venues in the Alexandrian neighborhood, Karmouz, to
promote them as spaces for arts and culture. This strategic
concept, initiated in 2013 by ElMadina, aims to support creative
economies of culture, which can assist sustainable development
and raise citizens’ awareness on how to use local resources
for start-up social enterprises and social image enhancement.
Urbego supported and facilitated the implementation of the
strategy’s first step by delivering an urban expertise on cultural
mapping and spaces activation to promote a valuable image
of Karmouz and set a possible “open-up” strategy for the
neighborhood.
"The central question of this project is about
how culture and human potentials can become
a tool to empower the local community and
a way for visitors to discover the character
of the place".
This cultural mapping results from a participatory workshop
that took place in Alexandria in April 2016 and involved
25 participants from 5 different southern and northern
Mediterranean countries (Egypt, Lebanon, France, Greece, and
Italy). The participants had different professional backgrounds
ranging from architects, urban planners, artists, researchers,
civil society activists. The process also involved inhabitants of
Karmouz neighborhood and community-based organizations
such as ElSarh Association
Performing on Cultural Routes: a handbook for the activators and promoters of less-known heritage in cross-cultural geographies
The handbook's curation stems from a participatory action research process conducted between September and December 2021. All materials and findings have been carefully collected, treated and interpreted throughout the Performative Journey project, reporting observations and lessons-learnt from implemented experiences in Demre (Türkiye), Elbasan (Albania) and Edessa (Greece). Performative Journey is supported under the “Grant Scheme for Common Cultural Heritage: Preservation and Dialogue between Turkey and the EU–II (CCH-II)” implemented by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism with the financial support of the European Union
Urban pocket : reclaiming the public in leftover open spaces
The Yes we can! Reinvent public space is IFHP’s participation to the third Biennale of Public Space in Rome 2015. Two initiatives combined have formed this cooperation: The International Laboratory on Self-Built Community Spaces and the Exhibition “Co-creation of Public Spaces”. These interventions form an important part of the IFHP Community activities for 2015 and we have been thrilled with the engagement and enthusiasm of our partners during the development of both interventions. In our minds co-creation and community engagement are key words to the success of future city development and we hope that you will find it inspiring to read about the findings of these actions
