Solid State NMR Spectroscopy: A multiscale "lens" for understanding complex materials
Complexity is an intrinsic feature typical of the most attractive innovative materials in many different research and application fields, as chemistry, optoelectronics, energy, recycling, medicine. Complexity arises from the coexistence of different chemical components, interfaces and phases, as well as from structural disorder and/ or heterogeneity. Complexity often hinders a detailed characterization of advanced materials, which, on the other hand, is crucial for understanding the functional performances and orienting the design and optimization of innovative materials. Solid State NMR spectroscopy (SSNMR) is an extremely powerful technique, which can effectively bridge this gap. Indeed, it can be applied to substantially every kind of soft and hard material and, by exploiting many nuclear probes and properties, it allows structural and dynamic properties to be characterized on very wide spatial (0.1-100 nm) and frequency (Hz-GHz) scales [1]. In this contribution I will show case studies of advanced materials characterized in the ICCOM-CNR/UNIPI joint lab [2], which, with the acquisition within the year of a last generation SSNMR spectrometer, will be the largest Italian laboratory for the study of materials by SSNMR. Hopefully this contribution will further increase the opportunity for the DSCTM community of taking advantage of this technique.

Quaerite primum regnum Dei in d Antiphon Fassung Padre Martini
This article investigates the role and meaning of practices of erasure in contemporary Italian street art culture. Taking Blu's choice of cancelling all his graffiti in the city of Bologna as a case study, I will investigate the limits and possibilities of this artistic performance in both political and social terms. Given the antagonist yet dialogic and dynamic relationship that connects street artists, civic institutions and urban spaces, I will argue that practices of erasure are a key component of the particular form of communication occurring among these actors. Through the analysis of #OccupyMordor, one of Blu's most famous works, I will describe the relationship the author entertained with the city of Bologna highlighting, at the same time, the structural problems raised by institutional museification projects

Tuberculosis in Genoa: The contribution of edoardo maragliano (1849-1940) and the medical school of the university of Genoa
Between nineteenth and twentieth centuries, medicine knew the beginning of an incessant development: the birth of new medical specialties (radiology, for instance), the introduction of new devices in medical and surgical wards, and the discovery of bacteria represented important milestones in that first historical period. The Medical School of the University of Genoa, head by Edoardo Maragliano, full professor of internal medicine, took on a relevant role in the battle against tuberculosis, through the experimental demonstration of the existence of an immune response against M. tuberculosis and the production of an inactivated vaccine. During his career, Maragliano surrounded himself with graduate assistants and students, who would later become full professors of internal medicine in prestigious universities and excellent physicians. In order to allow the correct diagnosis and educate his young colleagues, Maragliano endowed his clinic laboratories of haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and radiology. Under his supervision, the assistants of the Genoa University Medical Clinic issued over two thousand scientific publications

Calculating the power of permutation tests: A comparison between nonparametric estimators
In this paper we compare nonparametric estimators of the power curve of the one-sample permutation test. These estimators work when is unknown, as in standard nonparametric frameworks. The asymptotic normal approximation is compared with the conditional expectation of the test and the bootstrap power. Two bootstrap estimators are considered: the classical bootstrap power estimator, derived from the plug-in of the classical empirical distribution function, and the smoothed bootstrap power estimator, obtained from a smoothed estimate of the distribution function. The behavior of these four estimators is compared on the whole power curve by a simulation study which considers five different distribution functions and three different sample sizes. The simulation study shows that the smoothed bootstrap provides the best results in order to estimate high power values for determining the experimental sample size
“Chi l’ha detto?”. Un caso emblematico di errata attribuzione
This article discusses the real authorship of a sentence erroneously attributed to Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771) but actually by the French physician François Joseph Victor Broussais (1772-1838). This exemplary case shows how a single erroneous attribution risks being reproposed over time, consolidating itself in the scientific literature, so much to replace the original authorship with an erroneous one. It follows the absolute necessity to always and rigorously verify the accuracy of a sentence attributed to a certain author, both in form and in content, as well as in its real authorship.
