No full textProfessor Alfredo Falcone and Dr Lisa Salvatore speak to Roshaine Gunawardana, Managing Commissioning Editor: Professor Alfredo Falcone is the Director of the Department of Oncology and the Specialization School at the University Hospital of Pisa, Italy. He trained in Pisa and Genoa, Italy, and has held major positions in Italian oncology since 2000. He currently has more than 300 publications, including papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals, book chapters, and more than 600 abstracts of presentations to international and national conferences. The majority of his papers regard clinical and translational research, with a particular focus on metastatic colorectal cancer. Dr Lisa Salvatore is a medical oncologist in the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa. She has been an author on about 40 publications in major peer-reviewed publications and has made numerous presentations in national and international conferences. Her main interest is focused on clinical and translational research in metastatic colorectal cancer

giurisprudenza di Giovanni Falcone, conseguita con lode il 21
giugno 1961 presso l’Università di Palermo, e a quasi trent’anni
dalla strage di Capaci1.
93. L’alto magistrato, come noto, fu ucciso nell’attentato del 23 maggio 1992, nel
quale perì insieme alla moglie Francesca Morvillo, anch’essa giudice, e agli agenti
della scorta, Rocco Dicillo, Vito Schifani e Antonio Montinaro. L’accertamento
delle responsabilità penali a carico dei vertici di Cosa nostra, nell’ambito della
strategia dell’eccidio di Capaci, si è concluso con la sentenza della Corte di Cassazione,
sez. I, del 18 sett. 2008, nr. 1157, che ha confermato la sentenza della Corte
di assise d’Appello di Catania del 23 apr. 2006, nr. 24 con la quale sono state
emesse le condanne all’ergastolo che hanno riguardato l’intero vertice di Cosa
nostra. Con sentenza della Corte di assise d’Appello di Catania del 21 luglio 2020
(nel processo cosiddetto Capaci-bis) sono state confermate ulteriori quattro condanne
all’ergastolo per la strage.

Despite its name, it is neither a work about the issue of hunting with birds of prey, nor a letter exhausting the literary form of a treaty. Although Diplovatatius described it as consilium, it should be rather classified as quaestiones.It should be emphasized that the distinction of consilium, that is a legal advice drew up to consider the specific case from quaestio, theoretical analysis of some case, may be impossible. The more so that the basis for quaestiones were often genuine judicial cases, which were only changed with regards to identifying the parties and adjusting the case to the needs of teaching. Reduced level of the histone deacetylase Sir2 in mRNA decapping mutants leads to silencing defects and premature aging
No full textRNA metabolism directly or indirectly impacts various cellular pathways.
Mutations in factors involved in mRNA decapping result in phenotypic markers of apoptosis and lead to premature aging. These traits are accompanied by elevated histone mRNA levels persisting throughout the cell cycle and defects in S-phase progression.
Here we show that decapping mutants exhibit low levels of Sir2, which reduces silencing and leads to the elevated transcription of rDNA intergenic spacer regions.
We postulate that defects in decapping are associated with the derepression of silencing at heterochromatic-like regions. This, in turn, may affect histone modification and induce loss of silencing at specific loci, as well as recombination within rDNA repeats, both of which have been shown to regulate cellular lifespan.

Endowing robots with self-modeling abilities for trustful human-robot interactions
No full textRobots involved in collaborative and cooperative tasks with humans cannot be programmed in all their functions. They are autonomous entities acting in a dynamic and often partially known environment. How to interact with the humans and the decision process are determined by the knowledge on the environment, on the other and on itself. Also, the level of trust that each member of the team places in the other is crucial to creating a fruitful collaborative relationship. We hypothesize that one of the main components of a trustful relationship resides in the self-modeling abilities of the robot. The paper illustrates how employing the model of trust by Falcone and Castelfranchi to include self-modeling skills in the NAO humanoid robot involved in trustworthy interactions. Self-modeling skills are then implemented employing features by the BDI paradigm
Falcone e Borsellino
No full textLa costruzione dell’immaginario antimafia successivo alle stragi del 23 maggio e del 19 luglio 1992, in cui muoiono Falcone e Borsellino, è profondamente legato a un apparato iconografico (Puccio-Den 2009, 2022) che ruota intorno a un’immagine particolare: lo scatto del fotografo Toni Gentile. La fotografia, in bianco e nero, ritrae i giudici insieme, a mezzobusto, piegati l’uno verso l’altro nell’atto intimo di scherzare, sottraendosi temporaneamente al contesto istituzionale che la scrivania e i microfoni dietro ai quali sono seduti suggerisce. Questa immagine è indicata unanimemente come uno dei principali simboli della cultura della legalità, dell’onestà e del coraggio. A questo titolo, dalla prima pagine de Il messaggero su cui è apparsa per la prima volta, dopo la morte di Borsellino, è stata oggetto di innumerevoli riprese: negli striscioni delle manifestazioni organizzate dalle associazioni del Comitato dei lenzuoli e Palermo Anno Uno dopo le stragi; nei numerosissimi documentari che e reportage che hanno immediatamente conferito il carattere di “presente storico” agli eventi; in opere di arte pubblica, a Palermo e altrove, per la commemorazione del 23 maggio; in infinite rimediazioni, sui social e come nello spazio urbano, che riprendono la struttura plastica e figurativa della fotografia trasferendo il legame che vi è rappresentato su figure di altri attori, sostituendo Falcone e Borsellino o mostrando simultaneamente l’immagine fonte e quella derivata. Tuttavia, la “simbolicità” (Eco 1984) di questa foto, nei suoi usi politici, memoriali, pedagogici, non ha ancora ricevuto spiegazioni convincenti. La più in voga, tanto presso la pubblicistica (Scianna 2017) che nel discorso accademico (Ravveduto 2019: 146-147), è la sua capacità di condensazione di un “momento storico”. In questo intervento, nel rintracciare una genealogia della proliferazione di queste immagini su supporti e contesti discorsivi diversi, cercheremo di dimostrare il contrario: che non è la storia a fare le immagini, ma la proliferazione e la rimediazione (Bolter e Grusin 1999) delle immagini, nonché la loro stratificazione nella “memoria visiva” di una cultura (Mitchell 2015), che determinano le letture storiche degli eventi e dei personaggi che vi hanno partecipato. Nel proporre questa genealogia, oltre a evidenziarne alcune caratteristiche formali (Goodman 1977; Barthes 1980; Floch 1986, 1995) e la permanenza di temi e motivi visivi (Panofsky [1955] 2010; Calabrese [1986] 1992; Marrone 1995), cercheremo anche di differenziare gli ambiti semantici – politici, memoriali, pedagogici – che dominano in ciascuno contesto d’apparizione dell’immagine, mostrando come la sua “aura” e i suoi effetti di sacralità (Benjamin [1935] 1968; Otto [1917] 1923), saldino il testo visivo a particolari forme di circolazione dell’immagine nell’economia simbolica del discorso antimafia
