Serum leptin levels in acromegalic patients before and during somatostatin analogs therapy

GH excess is characterized by alterations of body composition such as decreased body fat mass; however, scant data are present regarding its effect on serum leptin levels. To better elucidate this topic, leptin secretion was studied in 20 acromegalic patients, before and after 6 months of treatment with somatostatin analogs (SR-lanreotide 30 mg and octreoticle LAR). Basal GH, IGF-I, insulin, blood glucose and lipid levels were measured and the area under the curve (AUC) for insulin and glucose and oral glucose insulin sensitivity (OGIS) during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were calculated. After 6 months of somatostatin analogs therapy, a significant reduction in GH and IGF-I plasma levels was observed (p<0.0005, both) with a significant increase of leptin levels (7.4 +/- 1.3 vs 13.2 +/- 1.6 ng/ml; p<0.05). Interestingly, the typical correlation of leptin with body mass index (BMI) was not present in active acromegaly, whereas it was restored after somatostatin analogs treatment; moreover, the gender difference in leptin secretion between men and women was preserved in active and controlled acromegaly. In conclusion, the gender-based leptin differences are preserved and leptin secretion/BMI ratio is normalized in acromegalic patients after somatostatin analogs therapy. (C) 2003, Editrice Kurtis

Salient networks: A novel application to study brain connectivity

    No full text
Extracting meaningful structures and data, thus unveiling the underlying base of knowledge, is a common challenging task in social, physical and life sciences. In this paper we apply a novel complex network approach based on the detection of salient links to reveal the effect of atrophy on brain connectivity. Starting from structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data, we firstly define a complex network model of brain connectivity, then we show how salient networks extracted from the original ones can emphasize the presence of the disease significantly reducing data complexity and computational requirements. As a proof of concept, we discuss the experimental results on a mixed cohort of 29 normal controls (NC) and 38 Alzheimer disease (AD) patients from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). In particular, the proposed framework can reach state-of-the-art classification performances with an area under the curve AUC = 0.93 ± 0.01 for the NC-AD classification

Dimensione letteraria e ragioni storiografiche. Il caso dell’Historia Langobardorum di Paolo Diacono

    No full text
The essay, starting from the general characteristics of Latin and literature in Latin in the Middle Ages, questions the character and functions of the historiographical work, through the example of Paolo Diacono's Historia Langobardorum, seeking its links with the school that is necessarily behind the author, with the subjective experience of the latter, with the historical and cultural reality of which he speaks and to which he addresses

This thesis examines the role of pain in the life and works of the Lombard author Paul the Deacon (c.720 - c.799). Through a linguistic, pragmatic, and hermeneutic analysis, it explores the different conceptualizations, modes of expression, and functions attributed to pain in relation to three factors: the characters involved in the scene, the author's aims, and the goals of his patrons. The research also attempts to understand whether Paul the Deacon used the same expressions and representations to communicate and conceptualize pain in his works, or if he tailored them to different target audiences. Additionally, the thesis investigates the role of the pain of others in Paul’s works, which categories of individuals he recognized as worthy of compassion and help, and why
