Thermally induced irreversibility in the conductivity of germanium nitride and oxynitride films

    No full text
We report the evidence for irreversible changes in the conductivity, σ(T), of a-Ge3Nx (3.7<4.6) and quasi-stoichiometric a-Ge2OyNx thin films occurring at T≳630K, under high vacuum conditions. We have found that σ(T) curves not only depend on the material properties but also on the thermal history undertaken by films. The irreversibility in σ(T), during heating in vacuum, is correlated to the transformation of the native GeO2 into volatile GeO. Thermal annealing in N2 atmosphere, on the contrary, results to extend film stability up to 973 K. At higher T, domes and pits are formed onto the film surface, due to the strong effusion of N-rich volatile species. Unstable N-Ge bonds can explain both the nitrogen thermodynamic instability and the Ge nano-crystallisation process occurring in a-Ge3Nx films, upon heating until 1023 K. Compared to a-Ge3Nx, quasi-stoichiometric a-Ge2OyNx is both more insulating and more stable upon heating up to 1023 K under N2 flow, that makes it a suitable passivating layer material for the fabrication of electronic devices

Undifferentiated connective tissue disease: the diagnoses critically revised-experience of a single center

    No full text
Although anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) are considered the main entry criteria for a diagnosis of undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD), many patients show different rate of ANA positivity and questionable diagnoses. Aim of the study was to revise the UCTD diagnoses and analyse the main predictors of evolution in a monocentric cohort. We retrospectively revised the diagnoses of 331 ANA positive patients, with at least one year of follow-up, classified as UCTD from 2009 and 2017. The diagnosis of UCTD was confirmed in 180 cases (54.4%). The evolution occurred in 18% of cases, after a follow-up of 6.9 (SD: 4.4) years. Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) (OR: 2.39), puffy hands (OR: 6.3), anti-ENA (OR: 2.34), anti-Topoisomerase I antibodies (OR: 4.93), rheumatoid factor (RF) (OR: 2.86) were associated with evolution. Evolution in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) occurred in 5 patients (2.78%) and associated with the addition of new autoantibodies, compared with other evolutions (p: 0.034; OR: 12; 95CI: 1.4-103.4). Evolution in Systemic Sclerosis and pSS was found in 14 (7.8%) and 8 cases (4.4%), respectively. Puffy hands and RF positivity as the predictors of SSc and pSS evolution, respectively. A confirmed diagnosis of UCTD, according with the available criteria, was assessed in about a half patients. The occurrence of puffy hands since the onset defines a patient with a potential evolution into SSc, while the addition of new specific autoantibodies represents a typical "fingerprint" of patients developing SLE. The Meyer-Neldel rule in the conductivity of insulating germanium nitride and oxynitride films

    No full text
Electrical conductivity, σ(T ), of a-Ge3Nx (3.7 < x < 4.6) and quasi-stoichiometric a-Ge2OyNx films has been investigated as a function of the temperature. Layers present a highly insulating behavior with conductivity and thermal activation energy rapidly rising, increasing T from room temperature to 600 K. Depending on the film composition, the conductivity can vary up to six orders of magnitude. Data analysis of σ(T) revealed a clear relation between the pre-exponential factor and the thermal activation energy, suggesting the validity of the Meyer- Neldel rule. For all investigated films, typical Meyer-Neldel parameters assume values in a narrow range: 10−8 < σ00 < 10−6 (Ωcm)−1 and 41 < EMN < 51 meV. To account for this behavior we have considered a model based on a sta- tistical shift of the Fermi level upon the temperature raise. Our study is the first experimental evidence of this kind of electrical behavior in this class of materials

Bridging the Diagnostic Gap for Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders: Evidence of a Common Extracellular Matrix Fragmentation Pattern in Patient Plasma as a Potential Biomarker

    No full text
Diagnosing hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), common overlapping multisystemic conditions featuring symptomatic joint hypermobility, is challenging due to lack of established causes and diagnostic tools. Currently, the 2017 diagnostic criteria for hEDS are used, with non-qualifying cases classified as HSD, although the distinction remains debated. We previously showed extracellular matrix (ECM) disorganization in both hEDS and HSD dermal fibroblasts involving fibronectin (FN), type I collagen (COLLI), and tenascin (TN), with matrix metalloproteinase-generated fragments in conditioned media. Here, we investigated these fragments in patient plasma using Western blotting across diverse cohorts, including patients with hEDS, HSD, classical EDS (cEDS), vascular EDS (vEDS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and osteoarthritis (OA), and healthy donors, uncovering distinctive patterns. Notably, hEDS/HSD displayed a shared FN and COLLI fragment signature, supporting their classification as a single disorder and prompting reconsideration of the hEDS criteria. Our results hold the promise for the first blood test for diagnosing hEDS/HSD, present insights into the pathomechanisms, and open the door for therapeutic trials focused on restoring ECM homeostasis using an objective marker. Additionally, our findings offer potential biomarkers also for OA, RA, and PsA, advancing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in these prevalent joint diseases

Germanium nitride and oxynitride films for surface passivation of Ge radiation detectors

    No full text
This work reports a detailed investigation of the properties of germanium nitride and oxynitride films to be applied as passivation layers to Ge radiation detectors. All the samples were deposited at room temperature by reactive RF magnetron sputtering. A strong correlation was found between the deposition parameters, such as deposition rate, substrate bias and atmosphere composition, and the oxygen and nitrogen content in the film matrix. We found that all the films were very poorly crystallized, consisting of very small Ge nitride and oxynitride nanocrystallites, and electrically insulating, with the resistivity changing from three to six orders of magnitude as a function of temperature. A preliminary test of these films as passivation layers was successfully performed by depositing a germanium nitride film on the intrinsic surface of a high-purity germanium (HPGe) diode and measuring the improved performance, in terms of leakage current, with respect to a reference passivated diode. All these interesting results allow us to envisage the application of this coating technology to the surface passivation of germanium-based radiation detectors

Retinal microvascular alterations in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis without cardiovascular risk factors: the potential effects of T cell co-stimulation blockade

    No full text
Background: The evaluation of microvascular alterations might provide clinically useful information for patients with an increased cardiovascular (CV) risk, such as those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), being the small artery remodeling the earliest form of target organ damage in primary CV diseases, such as arterial hypertension. The evaluation of retinal arterioles is a non-invasive technique aimed to identify an early microvascular damage, represented by the increase of the wall-to-lumen ratio (WLR) index. Abatacept (ABA), a T-cell co-stimulator blocker, is used to treat RA. A CV protective action was hypothesized for its peculiar mechanism of action in the modulation of T-cells, potentially involved in the pathogenesis of CV comorbidity. The study aimed to non-invasively investigate morphological characteristics of retinal arterioles in a cohort of RA patients treated with ABA. Materials and methods: Seventeen RA patients [median (25th-75thpercentile) age = 58 (48–64) years, baseline 28-joint Disease Activity Score DAS28-C-reactive protein (DAS28-CRP) = 4.4 (3.9–4.6), body mass index (BMI) = 24.2 (23.4–26) kg/m2, rheumatoid factor positive:52.9%, anti-citrullinated peptide autoantibodies positive:76.5%] without known CV risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, previous CV events, smoking) were evaluated by the adaptive optics imaging system of retinal arterioles before and every 6 months of therapy with ABA (T0, T6 and T12). Office blood pressure evaluation, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and tissue-doppler echocardiography were also performed. Results: A progressive significant reduction of the WLR of retinal arterioles was observed [T0 = 0.28 (0.25–0.30), T6 = 0.27 (0.24–0.31), T12 = 0.23 (0.23–0.26); p T0 vs. T6 = 0.414; p T6 vs. T12 = 0.02; p T0 vs. T12 = 0.009], without significant variations in other parameters. The T0-T12 reduction of WLR was correlated with that of DAS28-CRP (r:0.789; p = 0.005). Moreover, a significant reduction of diastolic office blood pressure and a trend for reduction of daily pressure measured by ambulatory monitoring were observed. Conclusion: In a cohort of RA patients without known CV risk factors, a reduction of retinal microvascular alterations was demonstrated after treatment for 12 months with ABA, in parallel with the reduction of disease activity. These results might suggest the possibility of microvascular abnormalities regression induced by the immune system modulation
