The tree model of a meromorphic plane curve

    No full text
We associate with a plane meromorphic curve f a tree model T(f) based on its contact structure. Then we give a description of the y-derivative of f (resp. the Jacobian J(f, g)) in terms of T(f) (resp. T(f, g)). We also characterize the regularity of f in terms of its tree. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Italia.Abhyankar S. La costruzione degli assi principali delle superfici quadriche

    No full text
The study proposes a concise method to construct the principal axes of a quadric surface, starting with a generic segment. The construction of the axes of a quadric is part of a classical problems of descriptive geometry, and is particularly complex if tackled using graphic representation methods. The proposed method, concise and therefore graphic, is elaborated using three-dimensional digital drawing. The descriptive construction, applied to a quadric cone, is generalized and extended to all other quadric surfaces

Excavator arms: Numerical, experimental and new concept design

    No full text
The aim of this work is to design the arms of a specific excavator adopting unconventional materials and comparing the machine performance due to components lightweight. A real excavator is numerically studied under specific load conditions; subsequently a series of experimental tests were performed in order to quantify the dynamic effects induced by moving load. On the basis of the actions determined by the load diagram and the inertia ones, a structural evaluation was performed on the arms in their original configuration. The results obtained were assumed like minimum performance for new design components using aluminum alloy and composite material with carbon fibers instead of structural steel. The geometry developed by adopting the composite material has an elliptical section instead of a classical rectangular section. With the adoption of the new solutions there is a total weight reduction up to 64.1% for the solution made of composite materials

Law and order on the Anglo-Scottish Border 1603-1707

    No full text
For centuries the Borders were notorious for their lawlessness and were regarded as beyond redemption by those in London and Edinburgh. Undisturbed, the landowners had assumed extensive powers and the population organised themselves into virtually autonomous clans. For James VI and I, however, the Borders symbolised the Union of the Crowns, for 'be the happie union' they were now 'the verie hart of the countrey'. It was thus, intolerable that the Borders should remain in their old state and so from 1603 there was a new drive to. pacify the region. Previous studies have either considered the region from one side of the frontier only, or have stopped at some date within the seventeenth century. It is however, important that the Border counties of England and Scotland be considered as a whole, for although divided by man-made divisions, they were united geographically, topographically, economically and socially. It is equally vital that the seventeenth century be regarded in its entirety, for the pacification of the Borders was a gradual process, of which the final stages were not reached until the last quarter of the century. In order to examine the whole process of the pacification and how the region gradually adapted to its new role as the Middle Shires of Britain, the thesis looks at the whole range of law courts operating in the area - from the central courts in London and Edinburgh, down to the local burgh, franchise and ecclesiastical courts. A chapter is devoted to each level of court and examines the role of a particular type of court in the judicial hierarchy of England and Scotland - its methods, procedure and personnel and the type of offender and offence dealt with. Perhaps the most important chapter in this respect is that on the Border Commissioners who were the body most intimately concerned with pacifying the region and who made a lasting impression upon every aspect of Border society. The Commissions have spanned over 80 years and more than any other judicial body shaped the Borders into the Eiddle Shires, yet no detailed study of them has ever been undertaken before. The combined effect on the inhabitants of all the law courts operating in the Borders, is measured in the Conclusion, where it can be seen that the life and ways of the Borderers had changed significantly between the Unions of the Crowns

Dataset on the use of metal hydroxides, instead of flue gas desulfurization residues, to stabilize fly ash by using bottom ash

    No full text
Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) provides significant benefits on waste treatment technologies. Nevertheless some by-products such as fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (Ash) are produced in the incineration plant. Indeed, FA is considered a toxic waste due to the presence of leachable heavy metals (i.e Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg) and metalloid (like As). This data article aims to investigate the reactivity of Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2 as possible substitute of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) residues by mixing with FA, BA and silica fume through a low cost technology. To assess the immobilization process of heavy metals and metalloid, three different samples' compositions were prepared for Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2 series, respectively. Elemental chemical analysis of leaching solutions were carried out by Total reflection X-Ray Fluorescence spectroscopy (TXRF). Data revealed that mixing municipal solid waste ashes with Mg(OH)2 decrease significantly Pb and Zn leachability after two months, and reduce their environmental impact in landfill

Intersession reliability of a posturo-stabilometric test, using a force platform

    No full text
To evaluate the intersession reliability of a posturo-stabilometric examination. METHODS: Single blind clinical trial conducted in two sessions over two weeks. 44 healthy volunteers free from postural and temporomandibular disorders. All the subjects complied with the criteria for completing the study. All the subjects underwent two sessions of posturo-stabilometric examinations in different visual and mandibular conditions. Sway area, sway length and the coordinates of the center of pressure were evaluated and statistically analyzed using the Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: All the posturo-stabilometric parameters seemed to have an excellent reproducibility with overall ICCs higher than 70% and good confidence intervals except for the sway area (ICC 0.422 with CI 0.283-0.560 with open eyes and ICC 0.554 with CI 0.424-0.683 with closed eyes). CONCLUSIONS: The posturo-stabilometric examination carried out using a force platform has a good intrasession and intersession reliability, especially considering sway velocity, COP X and COP Y parameters. The force platform usefulness in analyzing static posture is confirmed in any medical field

Advances in urothelial bladder cancer immunotherapy, dawn of a new age of treatment

    No full text
Urothelial bladder cancer displays a high number of somatic mutations that render these tumors more responsive to immunotherapy. Several immunotherapeutic agents were examined in patients with advanced stage urothelial bladder cancer and recently atezolizumab - an (PDL-1) immune checkpoint inhibitor antibody - was approved for the treatment of patients with metastatic disease progressing after platinum combination therapy. Despite the great success, there are still some unanswered questions and ongoing trials that are in progress to define the role of combination therapy and sequencing strategies. The objective of our manuscript is to summarize the most recent data on immunotherapy in advanced urothelial cancer. Current challenges and future perspectives of immunotherapy as a monotherapy or in combination strategies will also be analyzed
