Depression, anxiety levels and general psychological profile in Behcet's disease
No full textBackground: Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem disease with unknown etiology. Until today, the role of emotional stress and the real incidence of psychiatric symptoms in this disease have not been clarified yet. Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the general psychological profile of the patients diagnosed as having BD as well as their depression and anxiety levels in order to investigate the psychiatric aspects of this disease. Material and Methods: Twenty-three patients with BD and 17 patients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis who made up the control group were examined by the Beck Depression (BDI), Beck Anxiety (BAI) and Brief Symptom Inventories (BSI). Results: The mean BDI score of the BD group was 11.69 +/- 6.93, and the corresponding value was 9.11 +/- 7.34 for the psoriasis group. The mean BAI score of the BD group was 21.39 +/- 13.68 and this level was 12.41 +/- 10.70 for psoriasis patients. The mean BSI score of the BD group was 61.30 +/- 43.66 and it was 30.41 +/- 28.77 for the control group. The mean BDI, BAI and BSI scores of the patients diagnosed as having BD were significantly higher than those of the control group (F = 0.234, F = 0.508, F = 0.549 and p < 0.05). Conclusion: BDI, BAI and BSI scales are useful to evaluate the psychiatric aspects of BD. The results of our study revealed that the collaboration of a dermatologist and psychiatrist is essential for the follow-up of patients with BD. Copyright (C) 2001 S. Karger AG, Basel
NEIGHBORHOOD-LEVEL SOCIOECONOMIC POSITION DURING EARLY PREGNANCY AND THE RISK OF GASTROSCHISIS
No full textBackground: Studies have shown that pregnant women in low socioeconomic neighborhoods are at a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including birth defects. However, few studies have explored this association with gastroschisis. Using data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS), we investigated the association between neighborhood-level socioeconomic position (nSEP) during early pregnancy and the risk of gastroschisis, and evaluated whether nSEP modifies the associations between maternal age at conception and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gastroschisis. Methods: We analyzed data from singleton case infants diagnosed with gastroschisis and singleton non-malformed control infants delivered between 1997 and 2011. To characterize nSEP, two principal component analysis (PCA)-derived indices were constructed including the Neighborhood Deprivation Index (NDI) and a Neighborhood-level Socioeconomic Position Index (nSEPI). Maternal neighborhood was defined as the self-reported address mothers lived at the longest between one month prior to conception to the third month of pregnancy. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), and relative excess risks due to interaction (RERI) were calculated to assess modification by nSEP on the additive scale. Results: Mothers in moderate (NDI aOR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.49 and nSEPI aOR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.49) or low SEP neighborhoods (NDI aOR; 1.27; 95% CI: 1.05 1.54 and nSEPI aOR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.61) were more likely to deliver an infant with gastroschisis compared with mothers in high SEP neighborhoods. Residing in low SEP neighborhoods sub-additively modified the association between maternal age at conception and gastroschisis. Young mothers (< 20 years) in high SEP neighborhoods had double the risk of having an infant with gastroschisis (aOR: 6.55; 95% CI: 4.59, 9.35) compared with young mothers in low SEP neighborhoods (aOR: 3.13, 95% CI: 2.59, 3.78). However, nSEP did not modify the association between pre-pregnancy BMI and gastroschisis. Regardless of nSEP, young maternal age at conception and normal or underweight BMI were consistently associated with elevated odds of gastroschisis. Conclusions: Future studies of nSEP should consider examining potential mechanisms through which contextual factors may influence individual-level characteristics and/or its association with gastroschisis.Doctor of Philosoph
The entrepreneurial university and academic discourses: The meta‐synthesis of Higher Education articles
No full textThe innovative teaching, knowledge and technology production and societal service activities of academics are largely discussed within the entrepreneurial university discourse in Higher Education journals. Therefore, this research focuses on a meta-synthesis of Higher Education articles to better understand the concepts of the entrepreneurial university and entrepreneurial academic. After the systematic elimination based on keywords and titles, 25 articles have been selected from the top 10 Higher Education journals in the SCImago Journal Rankings. Content analysis was performed on these articles to highlight the common operational areas in entrepreneurial universities and activities of entrepreneurial academics. The meta-synthesis shows that, both for universities and academics, entrepreneurship is overwhelmingly characterised by the commercialisation of scholarly activities that enrich institutional income revenue as well as academics' personal income. However, such an approach can distance universities from their mission of public good; so Higher Education administrators should create mechanisms that would allow both to take place in a balanced way

However, evidence on factors predicting mortality is limited.Research Question: Are there any useful markers to predict mortality in COVID-19 patients with COPD?.Study Design and Methods: A total of 689 patients were included in this study from the COPET study, a national multicenter observational study investigating COPD phenotypes consisting of patients who were followed up with a spirometry-confirmed COPD diagnosis. Patients were also retrospectively examined in terms of COVID-19 and their outcomes.Results: Among the study patients, 105 were diagnosed with PCR-positive COVID-19, and 19 of them died. Body mass index (p= 0.01) and ADO (age, dyspnoea, airflow obstruction) index (p= 0.01) were higher, whereas predicted FEV1 (p< 0.001) and eosinophil count (p= 0.003) were lower in patients who died of COVID-19. Each 0.755 unit increase in the ADO index increased the risk of death by 2.12 times, and each 0.007 unit increase in the eosinophil count decreased the risk of death by 1.007 times. The optimum cut-off ADO score of 3.5 was diagnostic with 94% sensitivity and 40% specificity in predicting mortality.Interpretation: Our study suggested that the ADO index recorded in the stable period in patients with COPD makes a modest contribution to the prediction of mortality due to COVID-19.
