Probabilistic Logic over Paths
AbstractWe introduce a probabilistic modal logic PPL extending the work of [Ronald Fagin, Joseph Y. Halpern, and Nimrod Megiddo. A logic for reasoning about probabilities. Information and Computation, 87(1,2):78–128, 1990; Ronald Fagin and Joseph Y. Halpern. Reasoning about knowledge and probability. Journal of the ACM, 41(2):340–367, 1994] by allowing arbitrary nesting of a path probabilistic operator and we prove its completeness. We prove that our logic is strictly more expressive than other logics such as the logics cited above. By considering a probabilistic extension of CTL we show that this additional expressive power is really needed in some applications

On the progress of the 2015-2016 El Ninõ event
It has been recently reported that the current 2015-2016 El Ninõ could become "one of the strongest on record". To further explore this claim, we performed the new analysis described in detail in Varotsos et al. (2015) that allows the detection of precursory signals of the strong El Ninõ events by using a recently developed non-linear dynamics tool. In this context, the analysis of the Southern Oscillation Index time series for the period 1876-2015 shows that the running 2015-2016 El Ninõ would be rather a "moderate to strong" or even a "strong" event and not g one of the strongest on record", as that of 1997-1998. © 2016 Author(s)

Graphie: A network-based visual interface for the UK's primary legislation [version 1; peer review: 2 approved]
Background: legislation.gov.uk is a platform that enables users to explore and navigate the many sections of the UK’s legal corpus through its well-designed searching and browsing features. However, there is room for improvement as it lacks the ability to easily move between related sections or Acts and only presents a text-only rendering of provisions. With Graphie, our novel navigational tool (graphie.quantlaw.co.uk), we aim to address this limitation by presenting alternative visualizations of legal documents using both text and graphs. Methods: The building block of Graphie is Sofia, an offline data pipeline designed to support different data visualizations by parsing and modelling data provided by legislation.gov.uk in open access form. Results: Graphie provides a network representation of the hierarchical structure of an Act of Parliament, which is typically organized in a tree-like fashion according to the content and information contained in each sub-branch. Nodes in Graphie represent sections of an Act (or individual provisions), while links embody the hierarchical connections between them. The legal map provided by Graphie is easily navigable by hovering on nodes, which are also color-coded and numbered to provide easily accessible information about the underlying content. The full textual content of each node is also available on a dedicated hyperlinked canvas. Conclusions: While we focus on the Housing Act 2004 for illustrative purposes, our platform is scalable, versatile, and provides users with a unified toolbox to visualize and explore the UK legal corpus in a fast and user-friendly way
Evidence of non-extensivity in the seismicity observed during the 2011-2012 unrest at the Santorini volcanic complex, Greece
During the period of October 2011-January 2012, an increase of earthquake activity has been observed in the volcanic complex of Santorini Island, Greece. Herein, the magnitude distribution of earthquakes as well as the temporal distribution of seismicity are studied. The statistics of both parameters exhibit complexity that is evident in the frequency-magnitude distribution and the inter-event time distribution, respectively. Because of this, we have used the analysis framework of non-extensive statistical physics (NESP), which seems suitable for studying complex systems. The observed inter-event time distribution for the swarm-like earthquake events, as well as the energy and the inter-event earthquake energy distributions for the observed seismicity can be successfully described with NESP, indicating the inherent complexity of the Santorini volcanic seismicity along with the applicability of the NESP concept to volcanic earthquake activity, where complex correlations exist. © Author(s) 2013. On the scaling of the solar incident flux
It was recently found that spectral solar incident flux (SIF) as a function of the ultraviolet wavelengths exhibits 1/f-type power-law correlations. In this study, an attempt was made to explore the residues of the SIF with respect to the Planck law over a wider range of wavelengths, from 115.5 to 629.5 nm. Using spectral, Haar and Detrended Fluctuation analyses, we show that over the range from 10-20 nm to the maximum lag (≈ 500 nm), the SIF residues have a scaling regime with fluctuation exponent H ≈ 0.37 but with high intermittency (C1 ≈ 0.16, multifractal index α ≈ 1.7) and spectral exponent ≈ 1.46. Over the shorter wavelengths range we found on the contrary low intermittency (C1 ≈ 0) with spectral exponent ≈ 1 and H ≈ 0. © Author(s) 2015
