Again it is my happy privilege to convey my sincere good wishes to students entering the University for the first time as well as to those who are resuming their studies. I convey the good wishes of the members of the Senate as well.
I hope that in one respect you will be the last of the pioneers of the University of Lethbridge and that this will be the last year in which you will experience the difficulties and discomforts occasioned by the use of a temporary campus.
Students attend university for various reasons. May you attain the goals and desires which you wish to attain here.
May you also feel that you are a part of the university the whole body of faculty and students working in the search for truth and knowledge whether it be in the Arts, the Sciences, or in the Faculty of Education.

THE ACTING PRESIDENT
As the Acting President and on behalf of Dr Smith who will be back soon, let me say that we are pleased you are at the University of Lethbridge.
In my view it is useless to spout great words of welcome, of praise for the University to describe the unique environment available here, to laud the qualities of the faculty to poor mouth the facilities, etc. You will discover the truth about a University in general and us in particular if you apply yourself in the years ahead.
There is only one thought I would like to leave with you now. We have changed a lot since 1967 We expect to change alot more. The direction of change and its worth to you depends in large measure on you.
You will find many parts of our operation unsatisfactory for your goal of a higher education. We want to know about your dissatisfaction If you cannot bring yourself to actively participate in our development even in your first year here, then you deserve what you get. If you do participate, even if you don't see the changes you want, you and we will have had a much more rewarding time together

CO-ORDINATOR OF STUDENT AFFAIRS G W Russell
In addition to administering the Student Affairs area, this office serves an OMBUDSMAN-type function for the benefit of students. The Coordinator's office will hear student grievances which have not been satisfactorily dealt with through existing channels and attempt to mediate a successful resolution in each case.
COUNSELLING CENTRE
A professional staff is available to offer a variety of service to prospective and enrolled students.
Personal vocational and academic counselling is offered on either an individidal or group basis.
A range of tests is administered by the Centre including aptitude, interest, personality and those frequently required of students seeking admission to Graduate Schools (i.e., G.R.E. and Miller Analogies Test). In this regard a collection of graduate School catalogues is maintained along with an extensive vocational library
Other aspects of the Centre include a program to improve reading skills and the formation of special interest groups.
FOREIGN STUDENT OFFICE D Jensen
The Foreign Student Advisor is available to all foreign students who require information or guidance. Foreign students attending the University of Lethbridge are invited to consult the Advisor for any assistance.
It should be noted that the University does not have funds to support foreign students.
STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES (Mrs.)W.L Jacobson, R.N
The university maintains a Health Services Clinic staffed by a Registered Nurse and a visiting physician which is concerned with the general health of all students. As the emphasis of the student health program is on preventive medicine, students are urged to avail themselves of this service before serious symptoms develop.
Emergencies and cases of severe illness will be directed to a physician or to the 24-hour emergency wards of Lethbridge's two major hospitals.
HOUSING SERVICES D Jensen
Residence Accommodation
The University of Lethbridge provides'residential accomodation for approximately 100 students. Application forms may be obtained by writing to the Director of Housing, and should be submitted early Completed application forms must be accompanied by a 30 damage deposit. Should a student wish to cancel he must do so in writing before September 1 or forfeit his deposit.
Off-Campus Housing
The University strongly recommends that those students not living with their parents or relatives live in university approved housing. Approval is given under these conditions:
1 That the premises be isted through the Housing Office of the University
2. That the premises and facilities offered be inspected and classified according to physical condition and arrangement.
In addition, students and landlords are encouraged to sign student-landlord rental agreements.)

#*PLACEMENT SERVICES
The Placement Office, operating in co-operation with Canada Manpower assists students in obtaining permanent, part-time and summer employment. The placement of teachers is handled by the Faculty of Education. (Enquiries may be made at Room 237 L.C.C. Admin. Bldg.
All students seeking permanent employment through the Placement Service are encouraged to register as early as possible during the fall semester as industry and government agencies begin recruiting in October
A limited number of part-time and summer jobs are available through the Placement Service. Because of the increasing number of students seeking summer positions, students are encouraged to seek such positions early by s

The Student Awards Office provides information on entrance, undergraduate and graduate awards tenable at the University of Lethbridge or other universities in Canada. Awards Brochures are available upon request.
Should you require financial assistance, the Student Awards Office will provide application forms, information and guidance to obtain loans, grants or scholarships under the Canada Student Loans Plan and the Province of Alberta Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Fund.

On behalf of your Student Society Council I am pleased to welcome you to the University of Lethbridge. The purpose of this short handbook is to provide you with basic information about our university If your orientation program was successful you will already have most of the information you need.
The student government at this institution trios to involve tself in areas where it can provide some useful service to the members of the Student Society Briefly here are some of those areas:
1 Publications

c) a Course Evaluation and Guide (proposed d a Yearbook (under review e a literary-artistic journal called The Bridge f the Survival Kit you recieved at orientation
2. Student representation on university committees e.g. the Board of Governors, the Senate General Faculty Council Arts and
Science Council etc;
— the Student Council chooses the student reps for these committees from nominations received from the student body usually in March and April
3. Clubs e.g. the Film Society the Campus Ftorsemen's Club the Flying Club the Economics Club etc.
Club activity on campus varies from year to year depending on your willingness to become interested and involved.
4. Activities e.g. dances, concerts, Western Days, Winter Carnival etc 5 A AS and WSS
Active U of L participation in the Alberta Association of Students and Western Student Services 6. A project to provide free legal advice of students 7 The sale of contraceptives
Your student government involves itself in other areas also as needs and demands change. The effectiveness of the Student Council is largely determined by your willingness to share your ideas, t me and effort with your elected represent atives. I sincerely hope that you will consider volunteering to serve on the various committees of the university contributing to the Meliorist and the Bridge, involving yourself in clubs and activities, dropping in and talking to us at the Council Offices in the Student Facilities Building, and attending our Council meetings.
In order to represent you properly we need to know what you want and how you feel about our operation which after all is YOUR business. If you are willing to participate we can dothings. If not? We're screwed and so are you.
In closing I would like to suggest two things.
1 ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR CALENDAR! It is the official book of information and regulations which pertain to this university If you are familiar with your CALENDAR you may avoid many difficulties. Pay particular attention to pages 13 and 16!
