A Study on the Symptomatology and Diagnostic Methodology of Vanni Pitham
Vanni Pitham a clinical entity was described by Sage Yugi in his wisdom. The study conducted has come out with excellent results validating the clinical features of Vanni Pitham elucidated in an ultra short poetic segment by Yugi. The study was aimed at evolving a set of exclusive Siddha diagnostic findings for Vanni Pitham with the observation and inference of various parameters like Naadi, Neikkuri and disease acquired season, it can be concluded that all of them point to the development or vitiation of humour leading to the disease Vanni Pitham. The patient reported with the symptoms of Vanni Pitham were subjected to the standard set of investigations, the results and findings of the investigations were suggestive of Vanni Pitham according to modern classification of disease. Manikkadai Nool and Nei kuri findings may help in the identifying of preponderance in a person to develop Vanni Pitham, hence it can be used as a screening measure to advise the preventive measures well in advance. Almost the patients who diagnosed as Vanni Pitham had significant study of colonoscopy evidence conforming to the correlation of disease with inflammatory bowel disease. From the analysis done between Vanni Pitham cases and control group, notable variations were observed in both Siddha and Modern parameters. Interestingly, it was found that the symptoms presented by the patients in the study were those of a constant subset of symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease explained in the present day classification. It correlated with all of the symptoms mentioned by Yugi muni under Vanni Pitham. Thus the author concludes by throwing lights on validation of symptomatology and exclusive Siddha diagnostic methodology for Vanni Pitham so that a physician can arrive at proper treatment procedures by rightly diagnosing the disease

Maestro Irripetibile : Vanni Pasca e il suo impatto nella storia del design
Vanni Pasca, a critic and university professor of design, was a pioneer in giving dignity and theoretical depth to design. He educated young scholars and promoted the history of design as a key discipline in the training of designers. Founder of the Italian Association of Design Historians in 2009, Pasca also organized the First International Conference on Historical Studies of Design in Milan in 1991. An author of influential texts, including an essay on Christopher Dresser, he developed the concept of “expanded design”, suggesting an evolution of design beyond its traditional boundaries. Despite his significant impact, his legacy in Palermo has been overlooked. This article emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating his contribution, highlighting his international influence in design and beyond
Martianus Capella’s "De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii" opens with a double prologue, written in verse and in prose. In the prose section, the author is questioned by his son about the meaning of the hymn he has just recited and which the young man considers to be the creation of an idler. The verb with which this kind of activity is defined is, in the manuscript tradition, the Greek neologism γυμνολογίζεις, which could be interpreted on the basis of another neologism, γυμνολογία, a term which appears in the theological disputes on the human and/or divine nature of Jesus
Luigi Papo (de Montona): Combattente e attivista per l’Istria italiana - dalla guerra alla pseudo-storia
Luigi Papo was the leader of the Motovun fascist group who participated in the War with other volunteers of fascist militias between 1943 and 1945 in Istria. At the end of the War, after a short imprisonment in Prestranek (Slovenia), he succeeded to escape to Italy to avoid the war crimes indictments launched against him by Yugoslavia. In the following years, now acting politically instead of militarily, Papo continued his activism in associations of Istrian exiles and in their journals. Papo was a prolific author: he wrote numerous publications about the early and modern history of Istria and about his experiences in the war. Through his constant activism, he participated in the development of the narrative discourse on the Istrian exodus and foibe and had a strong influence in the circles of exiles and later in the various sectors of the Italian public. This article presents some moments of Papo’s experience as a fighter, activist and writer, and in particular discusses his dichotomous view of linguistic and national relations in Istria. Relative contribution of iron burden, HFE mutations and insulin resistance to fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver
The mechanism(s) determining the progression from fatty liver to steatohepatitis is currently unknown. Our goal was to define the relative impact of iron overload, genetic mutations of HFE, and insulin resistance on the severity of liver fibrosis in a population of subjects with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) who had low prevalence of obesity and no overt symptoms of diabetes. In a cohort of 263 prospectively enrolled patients with NAFLD, 7.4% of patients had signs of peripheral iron overload and 9% had signs of hepatic iron overload, but 21.1% had hyperferritinemia. The prevalence of C282Y and H63D HFE mutations was similar to the general population and mutations were not associated with iron overload. Although subjects were on average only moderately overweight, insulin sensitivity, measured both in the fasting state and in response to oral glucose, was lower. Univariate analysis demonstrated that the presence of severe fibrosis was independently associated with older age, female sex, overweight, aspartate/alanine aminotransferase ratio, serum ferritin level, fasting glucose and insulin levels, decreased insulin sensitivity, and with histologic features (degree of necroinflammation and steatosis). After adjustment for body mass index (BMI), age, sex, and degree of steatosis, ferritin levels (odds ratio [OR] = 1.77; 95% CI = 1.21‐ 2.58; P = .0032) and the oral glucose insulin sensitivity (OR = 0.53; CI = 0.33‐0.87; P = .0113) were independent predictors of severe fibrosis. In conclusion, the current study indicates that insulin resistance is a major, independent risk factor for advanced fibrosis in patients with NAFLD. Increased ferritin levels are markers of severe histologic damage, but not of iron overload. Iron burden and HFE mutations do not contribute significantly to hepatic fibrosis in the majority of patients with NAFLD

Structured backward errors in linearizations
A standard approach to compute the roots of a univariate polynomial is to compute the eigenvalues of an associated confederate matrix instead, such as, for instance the companion or comrade matrix. The eigenvalues of the confederate matrix can be computed by Francis’s QR algorithm. Unfortunately, even though the QR algorithm is provably backward stable, mapping the errors back to the original polynomial coefficients can still lead to huge errors. However, the latter statement assumes the use of a non-structure exploiting QR algorithm. In [J. Aurentz et al., Fast and backward stable computation of roots of polynomials, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 36(3), 2015] it was shown that a structure exploiting QR algorithm for companion matrices leads to a structured backward error on the companion matrix. The proof relied on decomposing the error into two parts: a part related to the recurrence coefficients of the basis (monomial basis in that case) and a part linked to the coefficients of the original polynomial. In this article we prove that the analysis can be extended to other classes of comrade matrices. We first provide an alternative backward stability proof in the monomial basis using structured QR algorithms; our new point of view shows more explicitly how a structured, decoupled error on the confederate matrix gets mapped to the associated polynomial coefficients. This insight reveals which properties must be preserved by a structure exploiting QR algorithm to end up with a backward stable algorithm. We will show that the previously formulated companion analysis fits in this framework and we will analyze in more detail Jacobi polynomials (Comrade matrices) and Chebyshev polynomials (Colleague matrices).sponsorship: The work of Vanni Noferini was supported by an Academy of Finland grant (Suomen Akatemian paatos 331240) ; the work of Leonardo Robol was supported by an INdAM/GNCS research grant "Metodi low-rank per problemi di algebra lineare con struttura data-sparse". Protein kinase C facilitation of acetylcholine release at the rat neuromuscular junction
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a Ca2+-dependent enzyme involved in synaptic transmission, which can be experimentally activated by the phorbol ester, phorbol 12-myristate-13-acetate (TPA). We studied the effects of TPA application on acetylcholine (ACh) release at the rat neuromuscular junction by means of the focal recording technique; possible effects of TPA at the postsynaptic site had been ruled out in preliminary studies. In extracellular solutions containing 2 mM Ca2+ and at the stimulation frequency of 0.1 Hz, TPA increased endplate current (EPC) amplitude. In non-stimulated preparations spontaneous current frequency was increased at a similar rate. The similar time course of TPA action on evoked and spontaneous currents suggests that an increased presynaptic Ca2+ efficacy can be considered to be the probable mechanism of action. The interactions of PKC with ACh release were further investigated. In 0.1 mM Ca2+ extracellular solutions, TPA enhanced evoked currents only at stimulation frequencies (e.g. 40 Hz) that were themselves capable of inducing facilitation. This facilitation is classically associated with presynaptic Ca2+ accumulation, indicating that PKC interacts synergistically with Ca2+ to facilitate ACh release. In particular, since mean quantum size and release probability remained almost unchanged during TPA facilitation, it was concluded that PKC acted by enlarging the immediately available store. Interestingly, TPA also increased the presynaptic currents that were observed to be largely brought about by Ca2+-dependent K+ currents: evidence was obtained to suggest that increases in these currents provide negative feedback against excess release activation rather than being an expression of enhanced Ca2+ influ
