By analysing the possibilities and the limits of the theories in the field, the author wonders whether and to which extent talking about "language as a code" or about "literal meaning" makes sense. To answer this question, the book brings in front of the tribunal of the philosophical analysis - but also in front of the tribunal of the empirical research - the main contemporary trends in philosophy of language.Il libro di Claudia Bianchi, Pragmatica cognitiva. I meccanismi della comunicazione (2009), fornisce al lettore una mappa ragionata delle principali posizioni degli studiosi che indagano il nostro sistema di aspettative nell’attribuzione di significato alle parole altrui. Attraverso un'analisi delle possibilità e dei limiti delle diverse teorie in campo, l'autrice si chiede se e in che misura abbia ancora senso parlare di "lingua come codice" o di "significato letterale". Il presente libro è un tentativo di rispondere a queste domande, attraverso un percorso introduttivo ai contenuti centrali della riflessione sul rapporto tra mente e comunicazione. Dopo un attento esame delle possibilità e dei limiti del modello del codice, viene presentato un modello alternativo: il modello inferenziale. Si discute dapprima la proposta filosofica di Grice, e in seguito quella dei contestualisti contemporanei, tra cui i teorici della pertinenza, più interessati alla spiegazione dei meccanismi mentali che guidano la comunicazione. Si propone infine una ridefinizione delle competenze necessarie alla comprensione di quanto non è direttamente espresso tramite il linguaggio, ma implicitamente comunicato, come nei casi di metafora e ironia

No full textThe paper investigates the role of social stereotypes in figurative language comprehension. The paper focuses on metaphors and argues that, being class-inclusion statements, metaphors are ipso facto ways of categorising (social) reality. Forms of categorisation and stereotypical knowledge are present in literal language as well, therefore it is worth exploring the nature of metaphorical categorisation that distinguishes literal from figurative expressions bearing social stereotypes. The paper argues that, on the one hand, metaphors are a peculiar way of creating stereotypical structures of beliefs, as they can implicitly offer people a frame to interpret the social world from a specific perspective. However, on the other, metaphors might also be a tool to challenge tacitly shared stereotypical knowledge by offering a new perspective which reveals previous strategies of framing

No full textIn the last years, plenty of studies have brought classical pragmatic theories in front of the tribunal of experience, to test their power of explanation and prediction. The result has been the growth of a flourishing inter-discipline, called “Experimental Pragmatics”, which uses experimental techniques coming from psycholinguistics, cognitive sciences and developmental psychology to bring to light the comprehension mechanisms of figurative language. The objective of this issue is to consider the main empirical results of Experimental Pragmatics in one of its most important research subjects, such as theories of metaphor and irony, and to explore, in particular, its theoretical influence on the discussion of the correlation between communicative and meta-representational competencies

No full textThis essay highlights the theoretical tension between the concept of the norm and another notion which has recently generated interest within Translation Studies: the notion of universal. The tension between the concept of norm and the concept of universal arises because the existence of norms implies situations which allow for different kinds of behaviour, while the notion of universal in translation theory implies invariable behaviour. The essay is an attempt to establish what we mean by the terms "norm" and "universal" in Translation Studies, in order to identify the nature of "translation universals"
