Task-Guided and Semantic-Aware Ranking for Academic Author-Paper Correlation Inference

    No full text
We study the problem of author-paper correlation inference in big scholarly data, which is to effectively infer potential correlated works for researchers using historical records. Unlike supervised learning algorithms that predict relevance score of author-paper pair via time and memory consuming feature engineering, network embedding methods automatically learn nodes' representations that can be further used to infer author-paper correlation. However, most current models suffer from two limitations: (1) they produce general purpose embeddings that are independent of the specific task; (2) they are usually based on network structure but out of content semantic awareness. To address these drawbacks, we propose a task-guided and semantic-aware ranking model. First, the historical interactions among all correlated author-paper pairs are formulated as a pairwise ranking loss. Next, the paper's semantic embedding encoded by gated recurrent neural network, together with the author's latent feature is used to score each author-paper pair in ranking loss. Finally, a heterogeneous relations integrative learning module is designed to further augment the model. The evaluation results of extensive experiments on the well known AMiner dataset demonstrate that the proposed model reaches significant better performance, comparing to a number of baselines. We would like to thank Yuxiao Dong for suggestions. This research is aimed to identify and to reveal a hikayat as classic travel literature of Indonesia by the travel writing theory of Carl Thompson. To gain those purposes, this research used literary criticism and descriptive-analytic methods. The object of this study is Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah ke Mekah by Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi  (1854), focusing on the six elements of travel writing by Carl Thompson’s approach based on the hikayat. This study shows that the hikayat contains six elements of travel writing. Those are self, other, movement, space, encounter, and writing. Abdullah as a sailor puts himself in his hikayat as the main character by using “sahaya” and “aku” to articulate “self” in his hikayat. The “self” during travel met new and foreign things that the author had never seen before. He drew and expressed his point of view, feeling, and observation of all the encounters that he had met during sailing in to hikayat. Keywords: Carl Thompson, hikayat, travel writin

Dynamic augmentation of SCORM pre-authored course materials with adaptive links to supplementary resources

    No full text
In a SCORM compliant courseware, content and the pedagogic approach to be taken are predefined by the course author. As a consequence, users are unable to learn according to their preferences, and implicitly they will all encounter the same learning experience. Recent attempts to personalise learning in SCORM often resulted in either modifying or substituting SCORM specification elements. Nonetheless, SCORM is a widely-used solution to interoperability problems. For this reason, this work focuses on supplementing SCORM rather than redefining it. This is accomplished by dynamically associating each pre-authored learning material in a SCORM package with adaptive links to relevant supplementary resources upon delivery. As a result, we have developed a Personalised Link Service (PLS) to deliver these links into user’s SCORM-compliant learning environment. In this paper, we present the design of a PLS authoring architecture which enables the automatic generation of a concept map from a SCORM package and consequently links to alternative learning resources, and a PLS run-time service oriented architecture which delivers these alternative resources, alongside the SCORM defined resources, according to a user model. We demonstrate the feasibility of our architecture by implementing a service to support a simple notion of a user model (Preferred Learning style)

Observations on public space in the city: the Town Hall Square of Vigonza (Italy)

    No full text
This contribution examines the building complex planned and constructed in Vigonza, a populous town situated to the north-east of Padua, between 1937 and 1939. The almost exclusive use of exposed terracotta brickwork and the abstract sinusoidal design of the main façade make the architecture scenario characteristic and crystalised, a fundamental element in the identity of Vigonza although its inhabitants are not aware, today, of the issues that produced it. The authors of this article are deeply convinced that the public quality of life in the city is connected with the formal choices made by the project plan. They think that it is possible to trace a close relationship of identification between the community and the architectural forms that create a sense of belonging in those places. One of the identifying forms of the city is certainly provided by the piazza, the place par excellence throughout history in which the community recognises itself. From the city of classical times to the medieval city followed by the Renaissance city and continuing up to the present day, the piazza persists as a space of identity with continuity in the layout of the urban structure. Its maximum expression is seen in the Renaissance where the project of the city was planned as a place of the representation of civil life and its institutions were recognisable in the form of the places

Recovering Industrial Heritage in the Small Towns. The Disuses Gioppo Textile Factories in Montebelluna (Italy)

    No full text
One of the most important issues in current urban regeneration policies is the recovering and transformation of the industrial heritage in small Italian towns. The city of Montebelluna in the province of Treviso, especially the hamlet named Biadene-Pederiva, is still today a significant example of the numerous disused industrial areas, which the local administration is planning to convert into new functions. The aim of this research is to investigate new design strategies for the urban regeneration of these areas, through the protection of their morphological, historical and social values from contemporary changing city. The method of " research by design" adopted here includes the tools of urban and morphological analysis and the use of contemporary architecture expressive resources; it leads to rethinking the relationship between memory conservation and the representation of new social and manufacturing needs through an innovative and sustainable way. Moreover, some typical principles of sustainable architecture are applied in the design process, such as the reuse and recovery of existing areas and building materials, energy, efficiency, the use of low environmental impact materials, and local identity preservation. The research was carried out as part of an agreement between the municipality of Montebelluna and the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering of the University of Padua; the results are a series of innovative urban and architectural transformation projects, capable of turning abandoned areas into something new. The case study presented here is the Filatura Gioppo textile factory, a typical industrial building from the 1930s, made of reinforced concrete and brick structure, including its own hydroelectric power plant for energy production and brick structure, including its own hydroelectric power plant for energy production. The proposal of transformation promotes the local tradition through the opening of a textile manufacturing museum, as well as tourist information centre, providing visitors with information on the area’s attractions; other possibilities of functional conversion for commercial purposes were also explored, or for new educational activities aimed to preserve and revive traditional arts and crafts practices. In conclusion, this design and research experience confirms that the recovering of industrial heritage, provided that it is carried out following an approach open to the contemporary interpretation of the morphological features of the area, can give new vitality as well as a new identity to small urban towns
