Yurtseven, Murat Kudret (Dogus Author), Ağaran, Berrin (Dogus Author)In this study, the design procedure and the performance analysis of a linear quadratic gaussian controller (LQGC) are presented. The controller is expected to regulate the production–inventory process of a manufacturing system along a pre-determined trajectory within the plant hierarchical control system; the hierarchical control structure is also described briefly in this chapter. The LQGC is based on a dynamic, discrete-time, and a stochastic model, aggregating products, and production processes. The simulation results show that the LQGC is well -suited for the intended purpose

The aim of this study is to examine the translation of Turkish version of Nadine Gordimer's first novel None to Acoompany Me written after receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature within the framework of style, language and theme. The reason why Nadine Gordimer was preferred in this study is to examine a South African woman author other than many important authors in the postcolonial period such as V. S. Naipaul, Chinua Achebe and Salman Rushdie. As None to Accompany Me has specific cultural elements, linguistic structures and postcolonial themes that are intrinsic to the postcolonial period, it is conceded to benefit from two translational approaches and one translation method during the analysis of translator's translation strategy. Paul Bandia's tripartite or three-tier translation approach will be used as the main method and Lawrence Venuti's foreignization and domestication approach and Vinay and Darbalnet's translation procedures will be considered as supporting methods during the qualitative comparison of two books. The first translation step of Bandia's approach will be analyzed within the framework of Vinay and Darbalnet's methods and the second and third steps of translation process will be assessed in terms of Lawrence Venuti's foreignization and domestication approach. In general, the aim of this study is to examine the transfer of indigenous style and thematic features that are specific to the postcolonial texts to the target culture and language that is unfamiliar to postcolonial spirit

Ülengin, Füsun (Dogus Author) -- Ağaran, Berrin (Dogus Author) -- Önsel, Şule (Dogus Author) -- Conference full title: IX International logistics & supply chain congress: international retail logistics in the value era: 27-29 October 2011, Çesme, İzmir, TurkeyThe economies of the world have become increasingly interdependent, and organizations have come under tremendous pressure to maximize productivity and profitability. Creating value through outsourcing has emerged as a popular competitive strategy for firms of all sizes in all types of industries. The aim of this research is to investigate the use of third party logistics in Turkish companies from the users’ perspective to identify the types of logistics services outsourced, problems encountered in outsourcing these services, logistics costs, decision makers in outsourcing logistics activities, and information sources used in the decision-making process. A structured survey was selected as the tool for data collection. The field study involved face-to-face interviews with 204 companies out of top 500 companies ranked in terms of turnover that are registered with industrial associations and chambers of commerce in Turkey. Moreover, a decision support system based on Bayesian Causal Map is proposed for 3PLs in order to assist them in their service proposals for different sectors. This study is a first attempt to reveal and compare the outsourcing perception of the companies in different sectors, to expose the firms’ underlying motives as well as the respective importance of these motives for outsourcing logistics activities in Turkey. The use of Bayesian Causal Map based on the survey results provides an important guide to the 3PL providers to pick a suitable strategy and to prioritize their operational activities in different sectors in such a way to achieve a competitive advantage

Ağaran, Berrin (Dogus Author) -- Ülengin, Füsun (Dogus Author) -- Önsel, Şule (Dogus Author) -- Conference full title: The 12th World Conference on Transportation Research, 11-15 July, 2010, Lisbon.Supply Chain Management is a management philosophy developed after realizing the necessity of coordinating the firms in order to increase profitability and survive in the market under the circumstances of rough and rapidly increasing global competition. According to this philosophy, all the processes from raw material procurement to final product sales and all the players who take place in these processes are the links of a chain. The success of the supply chain depends on the success of the each member across the chain, however the success of individual participants itself does not mean a successful SCM application is achieved. Hence the paper aims at analyzing the basic actors of the logistics sector in Turkey; namely logistics service providers, logistics service customers, the equipment and hardware providers, and logistics information system providers to reveal the snapshot of each party and to point out the gaps regarding requirements of different sectors and offered services. A field study involving face-to-face interviews with each of the 428 companies operating in the logistics sector as customers, service providers, information systems providers or equipment providers was performed for the research. The requirements for technological improvement in these four perspectives as well as in the logistics sector globally are identified by exposing open-ended questions of the interviews. The requirements are sorted according to the strategic considerations of the sector stakeholders. Finally a global result is established for the logistic sector by using order weighted averaging operator

In a perfect human settlement - providing food, shelter, communications, employment, an efficient environment for the occupants’ better performance - allhuman needs are satisfied without significantly polluting or destroying the naturalenvironment. The depletion and degradation of natural resources and their effects, diseases, and disasters must be taken into consideration. This is a global problemso there must be cooperation. The contents of this book are based on the differentarchitectural strategies that aim to achieve a low-energy, healthy, and sustainablebuilt environment using the extensive experience of the authors, researchers, andscientists in architecture, planning, and construction. In addition to covering primer passive design principles in different climaticconditions through examples, the book devotes sections to different sustainabilitypoint of views: environmental, social, and economic. Determining the neededstrategy according to function, economy, and occupant comfort and affordability isthe crucial step. Creating a framework for designing and building sustainable anddurable structures is important in order to reduce carbon emissions and operationcosts. This book helps the reader achieve a sustainable development withoutdestruction of the resources while also growing a universal awareness of protectingthe living and non-living environment. The book contains an introductory chapter and four chapters authored by severalacademicians and researchers in the housing field. Within every chapter, the readerwill be given an overview of determined parameters on the subject and, in manycases, a description of the authors’ original proposed solution. The content of thebook is organized as follows:Chapter 1: Introductory Chapter: Healthy and Affordable HousingStrategiesThis chapter focuses on healthy housing due to the sustainable design strategiesnot having any harmful results on human and environmental health. This chaptershows that according to sustainability criteria, not only the environmentalresponsiveness but also social and economic responsiveness should be taken intoconsideration.Chapter 2: Effects of Street Geometry on Airflow Regimes for NaturalVentilation in Three Different Street Configurations in Enugu CityIn this chapter, efficient natural ventilation, according to the micro climateconditions of an urban environment, is analyzed. Two different regions(recirculation region and ventilated region) in an urban street have differentcharacteristics because of the flow and the street geometry. This chapter looks atthese regions of airflow cultivation in a high-density residential settlement in atropical African city as a case study.XIVChapter 3: Fundamentals of Natural Ventilation Design withinDwellingsThis chapter presents the parameters that are intricate to occupant satisfaction;such as acoustical, lighting, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort. These occupantphase issues are generally ignored by the designers and constructers. It is statedin this chapter that natural ventilation is an excellent alternative to achieve anadequate indoor environment in a sustainable manner.Chapter 4: Comprehensive Strategy for Sustainable Housing DesignSustainable housing strategies, maximizing occupants’ well-being, and minimizingthe environmental load are the main concern of this chapter. In order to create aframework for this phenomenon, the author(s) generated a sustainability checklistand design guidelines. The chapter also presents a comprehensive visualization inorder to adjust sustainable housing design to suit different and changing situations.Chapter 5: Social Innovation and Environmental Sustainability in SocialHousing Policies: Learning from Two Experimental Case Studies in ItalyThe chapter discusses approaches and solutions developed by social housing incontemporary cities, using two Italian case studies. By analyzing housing strategiesin a broader perspective in terms of its procedural dimension, the author(s)focus on two Italian social housing case studies. The important measures such astemporariness, flexibility, and the coordination are examined. The social, planning, architectural, and environmental quality of these two cases are represented.Chapter 6: Socioeconomic Influences on Affordable Housing Residents:Problem Definition and Possible SolutionsThe last chapter focuses on socioeconomic status (SES) as a powerful socialdeterminant of health. After defining affordable housing, the author(s) discuss thefuture developments to improve the long-term health outcomes of these individualsand families due to survey data and geographical analysis. At the end they proposesolutions to identify potential changes to affordable housing to promoteSumming up the issues presented in the book, it is directed at academic researchers, practitioners, and students in the housing and construction field. The Homeobox B13 (HOXB13):Interleukin 17 Receptor B (IL17BR) index of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer (ER (+) BC) patients may be a potential biomarker of recurrence/ metastasis. However, effects of microRNA (miRNA) binding to the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of HOXB13 and IL17BR and its function on recurrence/metastasis in ER (+) BC remains elusive. The aims of this study were to determine the expression of miRNAs that bind to 3'UTR of HOXB13 and IL17BR in ER (+) BC patients and asess the effects of these miRNAs on recurrence/metastasis. The expression profiles of HOXB13 and IL17BR were evaluated using RTPCR in tumors and normal tissue samples from 40 ER (+) BC patients. The expression level of 4 miRNAs, which were predicted to bind the 3'UTR of HOXB13 and IL17BR using TargetScan, microRNA.org and miRDB online databases, were further evaluated with RT-PCR. Our findings demonstrated that high miR-1266 levels might be significant prognostic factor for recurrence/metastasis occurrence (3.05 fold p=0.004) and tamoxifen response (3.90 fold; p=0.2514) in ER (+) BC cases. Although we suggest that modulation of miR-1266 expression may be an important mechanism underlying the chemoresistance of ER (+) BC, advanced studies and validation are required
