Early Propensity to Migrate: A Descriptive Analysis from A Survey of Schooled Teenagers in a Southern Italian City
The brain drain from the south of Italy is a well-known and unfortunately increasingly
alarming phenomenon. In recent times, the demographic decline due to migration
has been coupled by a worrying decrease in the average age at which this process starts.
While most of the existing literature has looked at the problem looking at migrant workers,
especially in relation to their level of schooling or education, here we look at the
propensity to migrate at an earlier stage of life while people are still in their secondary
school studies. Using a unique field survey conducted over a large sample of students
in the city of Palermo we uncover that more than three quarters of the interviewed sample
would consider moving far away from the family after completing their studies. We
perform a simple descriptive analysis to look at how this propensity to migrate changes
depending on some individual and family characteristics of the respondents

Agglomeration Externalities and the Productivity of Italian Firms
Despite the richness of contributions on the effects of agglomeration on economic activity, the empirical evidence still falls short, especially at the microeconomic level, where they should matter the most. This paper adds to this literature by performing an empirical exploration of the role of Marshallian, Jacobian, and Porterian externalities for the productivity of Italian firms. In particular, a large dataset of small and medium enterprises is first employed to estimate firm-level total factor productivity (TFP). Then dynamic panel and instrumental variables estimation methods are used to assess the effects of agglomeration externalities. The findings seem to suggest that these effects may vary depending whether the level or growth of TFP is considered. While the first is mostly influenced by the extent of Marshallian economies, the latter is higher when Jacobian and Porterian economies are at work
Local Tourism System in Sicily: a proposal for the identification through spatial classification with the constraints of contiguity
The theoretical approach to Tourism Economics is based on the systemic nature of tourism, stemming both from the heterogeneity of the tourist package and from the existing complex interactions among destinations, firms, tourists. The systemic nature of tourism and the identification with its geographical representation, that is the destination, introduce the concept of Local Tourist System (LTS). This systemic nature has also been recognized by the Italian legislation by creating of an economic policy instrument, named Local Tourist System: “We call local tourist systems, homogeneous or integrated tourist environments, which include territories belonging even to different regions characterized the offer integrated cultural, environmental and tourist attractions, including typical agricultural and local handicraft products, or by a widespread presence of individual or associated tourist firms” (National Tourist Law Reform, Law 29 March 2001 No. 135, Our Translation). Moving from the assumption, the aim of this paper is to propose a method to identify LTS. It is applied for identify LTS in Sicily. The method is articulated in two steps. In the first step we proposed use of Gearing’s approach (Gearing, 1976) to measure tourism attraction in Sicily and in the second step, we proposed to use spatial classification with the constraints of contiguity for identify LTS in Siciliy. This study will provide information for policy makers, researchers and whoever wants to implement the idea of collaborating networks in a context of local tourism development
Sistemi Turistici Locali in Sicilia: un approccio all’identificazione
all’individuazione dei Sistemi Turistici Locali attraverso l’applicazione
dell’algoritmo delle k-medie con vincolo di contiguità spaziale
Un nuovo testimone per le rime di Fazio degli Uberti
The paper aims to present a short fragment of a vernacular poetry manuscript (end of 14th c.), found in codex Lat. Z 478 (= 1661) of Venice's Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. In particular, the author studies the contribution of this unknown witness to the text of the canzone Io guardo i crespi e i biondi capelli by Fazio degli Uberti, in the light of the stemma codicum Lorenzi had drawn in his recent critical edition of Fazio's poems (Pisa, 2013). Furthermore, the author examines the text transmitted by the Marcian codex of the pseudo-Boccaccian canzone Subita volontà, nuovo accidente. The essay is followed by the critical edition and by the commentary (focusing on linguistic, philological and literary aspects) of two unpublished sonnets
