Women Veterans WW2 - Mildred A. Engelhardt
The following information and photograph were from a wall display presentation in Egg Harbor City, NJ, in honor of the women who served in the Armed Forces of the United States. The museum presentation was prepared for Memorial Day 2001, and remained until the end of the year. The photos were mounted on red construction paper and the narrative placed on white paper stars. Both were mounted on a blue background.
Mildred A. Engelhardt did her boot camp at Camp LeJuene, NC in February 1944. She was transferred to Parris Island, SC where she worked in a Captain's Office of a men's battalion. "I had guard duty with another lady marine once or twice a month. We had to patrol the women's area with a Billy club, usually at 2:00AM to 4:00AM. A Little Scary!" Mildred was discharged in March 1946 as a Corporal from the U. S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve

Engelhardt on the Family
Tristram Engelhardt, Jr. offers erudite and compelling arguments for the view that all families should try to realize the traditional family. Although I tend to agree with him from my personal standpoint, I doubt that this view can be justified to those with whom we are in reasonable disagreement about the family. I make three critical points. First, though Engelhardt stops short of saying that the state should encourage people to form traditonal families, or discourage those who do not, some state perfectionists might do so. From the perspective of public reason, it is unjust for the state to favor some conceptions of the good over others, if these conceptions are all reasonable. Moreover, those whose conceptions of the good are not favored would feel that they are disrespected. Second, insofar as Engelhardt thinks that all families should try to realize the traditional families, the traditional family would not be a good to those who do not like children. Moreover, it would be difficult to persuade those who have decided not to have children for reasons of career, burden, or more altruistic concern. Third, against Engelhardt’s stance against the “egalitarian aspirations” of liberalism, I argue that too often women sacrifice their possible careers for the sake of the family, even should they hold advanced degrees from prestigious universities, or professional qualifications. This kind of injustice is too uncomfortable to ignore

Unprecedented Borylene Insertion into a C–N Bond
Ghadwal R, Schürmann CJ, Engelhardt F, Steinmetzger C. Unprecedented Borylene Insertion into a C-N Bond. European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. 2014;2014(29):4921-4926.Carbenes are well established reactive intermediates and play an important role in organic synthesis, whereas the scope of borylenes is rather limited. Selective borylene insertion into a C–N bond to yield boryl‐functionalized N‐heterocyclic olefins (NHOs), [{N(Dipp)N(DippBH)CHCH}CCH2]2 (6) and [{N(Dipp)N(DippBPh)CHCH}CCH2][{N(Dipp)N(2‐iPr‐6‐CHMeCH2BC6H3)CHCH}CCH2] (8) (Dipp = 2,6‐iPr2C6H3) is reported for the first time. KC8 reduction of (IPrCH2)BRX2 adducts (IPrCH2 = {N(Dipp)CH}2CCH2; R = X = I (2); R = Ph, X = Cl (4)) affords compounds 6 and 8. Surprisingly, treatment of (IPrCH2)BHCl2 (3) with KC8 yields completely unexpected diborane compound (IPr)BH2BH2(IPr) (7). Compound 2 is unstable in THF and induces ring opening reaction to form the borenium ion [(IPrCH2)B{O(CH2)4I}2]I (5

Replication Data for: Racial Attitudes through A Partisan Lens
The conventional wisdom is that racial attitudes, by forming through early socialization processes, are causally prior to most things political, including whites’ party identifications. Yet, a broad literature demonstrates that partisanship can shape mass attitudes. I argue that this influence extends even to presumptively fundamental predispositions like racial attitudes. Applying cross-lagged models to panel data from the 1990s and 2000s, I demonstrate that whites align their racial attitudes with their party loyalties. Partisanship’s influence is more pronounced in the latter time period, results consistent with a view that changes in the political context can make partisanship a more likely causal force on other attitudes. Racial concerns not only provide a foundation for political conflict, but my results reveal that political processes can actually increase or decrease racial animus
