An Evaluation of Bank Workers Welfare in Post Consolidation Era in Nigeria
The bank consolidation exercise that came in form of merger and acquisition or complete buy-over in some cases in Nigeria put the banks in vantage position in terms of increased capital base, competitive strength and arguably improved performance. Furthermore, many scholars had written so much about how the exercise led to employee downsizing through retrenchment, rationalization and cost reduction with other attendant consequences on job security, employee motivation and on the long run decreased productivity. However, there is dearth of research in terms of bank workers welfare after the consolidation exercise. Hence this study examined employee’s welfare after the banking reforms in Nigeria. A sample size of four hundred and seven (407) employees from ten (10) selected banks in Ilorin metropolis was purposively chosen in order to achieve the objectives of the study. Primary data were obtained with the aid of questionnaire administered to bank workers. Secondary data were obtained from the official book of the various banks. Data were analyzed with appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Results revealed that employee welfare were compromised in spite of the increase in capital base that accrued to the banks from the consolidation exercise. Consequently, the study recommended that regulatory agencies and managements of banks should incorporate factors of job security and motivational incentives in subsequent reforms. Nigerian Immigrants and Xenophobic Violence in South Africa
The author argues that in many parts of Africa identity-politics and “nativist” narratives link migration to crime by making mobility a contentious political issue. This study exemplifies this by examining the experiences and adaptation of Nigerian migrants in South Africa and the confrontation with xenophobic violence this frequently involves. In South Africa, stereotypic reproduction represents the past in the present within the context of nation-building and contradictions of “African Renaissance.” Despite the leading roles Nigeria and South Africa are playing in African politics and business, the xenophobia against African immigrants undermines the prospect of regional and continental development

Factors influencing students’ choice of a federal university: a case study of a Nigerian federal university
The factors affecting students’ choice of higher education is essential for the university’s management. Various research across the world has been carried out to understand how students select their preferred universities for tertiary study; however, there is a shortage of insight from an African perspective. Specifically focusing on a federal university in Nigeria, this study aims to explore factors influencing students’ interest in the school and why they selected it as their study location. A structured questionnaire from 282 undergraduate students based on stratified random sampling was used to understand these choice factors. The study found that personal interest greatly influenced students’ decisions, followed by parental influence, university reputation, university ranking, and fees. The results provide an understanding of students’ choices for universities in a Nigerian context, which is a loose representation of the general influences of students’ choice for study sites on the continent. This would enable stakeholders working in the Nigerian education sector including academics, administrators and practitioners and international collaborators to understand the most effective ways to reach out to prospective students and draw useful lessons for universities' marketing strategies, which could be recommended not only in Nigeria but in Africa at large
CORRELATION OF AGE AND SEX IN RELATION TO SERUM CALCITONIN, CREATININE AND URIC ACID ON CKD PATIENTS WITH THYROID ABNORMALITY COMPLICATION
Abstract: This study evaluated the serum calcitonin, creatinine and uric acid levels in chronic kidney diseases (CKD) complicated by dysthyroidism. A total of 119 participants were recruited in this study, majority of who were males. Majority of the participants in this study were between the ages of 30 to 68 years with a median of 49 years. The high prevalence of CKD among this age group can be attributed to underlying pathologies such as hypertension, diabetes or both. The level of serum calcitonin, T3, T4, TSH,creatinine and uric acid of study participants according to age range, for age 41 years, Calcitonin(71.2±11.3), T3 (0.765±0.0396), T4 (7.45±0.255), TSH (8.11±0.529), Creatinine (7.01±0.66), Uric Acid (13.4±0.801).from the result of this study calcitonin, creatinine and uric acid proved to be statistically significant (p≤0.05), however T3, T4, TSH showed no statistical significance.
Keywords: serum calcitonin, uric acid levels, chronic kidney diseases (CKD).
