New York in collezione privata, 1626).The author analyses a painting by Leandro bassano, through a print of the late eighteenth century, and empahsizes the connections between the figuration used in Venetian concert painting and the language applied in the musical paintings by Caravaggio a nd his followers.
Finally the analysis of a drawing found by the author, and tradinally attributed to Rutilio Manetti, opens up interesting questions in regard to the history of the paioonting Concert with Characteres and a Drinker by Valentin de Boulogne, now in private collection in New York
Climate impact evaluation of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cathode material through the creation of a dynamic model
This thesis was developed at the PEM (Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components) institute of RWTH University in Aachen. The work focuses on the development of a model that simulates the production chains of the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cathode material and calculates its manufacturing emissions. This stems from the need to have a tool to reliably and dynamically assess the environmental impact of lithium-ion battery production chains especially by giving manufacturing companies the opportunity to know more precisely their scope 3 emissions (other indirect emissions along the value chain, outside the direct control of the organization). To date, indeed, companies and policymakers can only rely on "static" values, i.e. those relating to a specific case that are difficult to decontextualise or too generic for applications in different situations. The data on which the operation of the model is based are derived from careful consultation of scientific papers combined with calculations made by the author to establish the values of the parameters. The results obtained using the developed tool are satisfactory and to be considered fairly aligned with the results stated by other studies pertaining to the subject. Thus, the model is effective in establishing material, energy and emission flows of precursor materials but has some weaknesses in relation to the parameters used for the final production processes that aggregate these precursors to produce the cathode paste. This is due to the secrecy of these methods, considered a strategic asset of manufacturing companies, as well as the rapid evolution of these methods. The model is an early version of what could become a powerful tool for companies and policymakers if a collaboration of researchers and developers is created to come up with a more comprehensive open-source program with more features
Industrial Heritage in Rome: Valorization and Reuse of Abandoned Industrial Areas
In recent decades, abandoned industrial sites have emerged in areas affected by deindustrialization. The lifecycle of buildings, from construction to operation to abandonment, is simultaneous with substantial changes affecting urban and natural landscapes and quality of life. This paper focuses on the urban regeneration of industrial sites and their valorization and reuse as an alternative to urban sprawl. The author applies her architectural and academic background to describe application studies within the urban area of Rome, Italy, where urban growth is no longer sustainable and the presence of abandoned industrial sites is critical. A methodology is proposed to address this challenge and select optimal architectural and urban renewal strategies. This process involves a multilayered ethical/aesthetic assessment of cultural, environmental, economic, and social issues. In-depth studies of heritage sites are illustrated; these demonstrate how the proposed methodology results in greater resiliency, flexibility, and sustainability, thereby improving the area’s quality of life
Operator equations and invariant subspaces
Banach space operators acting on some fixed space X are considered. If two such operators A and B verify the condition A2=B2 and if A has nontrivial hyperinvariant subspaces, then B has nontrivial invariant subspaces. If A and B commute and satisfy a special type of functional equation, and if A is not a scalar multiple of the identity, the author proves that if A has nontrivial invariant subspaces, then so does B.</p
Effect of the crystal chemistry of swelling clay minerals on their cationic exchange and dissolution properties. Implications in a context of remediation of acid mining environment
Swelling clay minerals, in particular smectites, are present in many surface and subsurface environments in which they have a major impact on the mobility of major cations and trace elements due to their adsorption capacity. In context of remediation of mining environments operated by acid leaching, these smectites can act as pH buffer and play a role in the immobilization of soluble elements. The type of clay minerals present in the poorly consolidated sands of an aquifer leached by acid solutions was studied. The presence of beidellite type smectites (di-octahedral, tetrahedral charge) was evidenced. However, few studies exist on the ion exchange properties or the dissolution of beidellite, as most of them deal with montmorillonite properties (di-octahedral, octahedral charge). Then, an ion-exchange model involving 5 major cations of natural waters (Na, K, Ca, Mg, H) and one trace element (226Ra) was proposed for a reference beidellite. Dissolution rates and interfacial mechanisms in acidic solutions were investigated in order to check for the validity the ion-exchange model at low pH. Moreover, effects due to the texture/aggregation of particles in suspension were evidenced on the ion-exchange and dissolution properties. This study was focused on the impact of the crystal chemistry on reactive property of the smectites, by comparison of the properties of beidellite with those of montmorillonitic minerals. Results indicate that smectites crystal chemistry has a significant impact on their properties, and such parameter could be considered in reactive transport models when they take into account cation exchange and dissolution properties of smectites
François Antoine Valentin Riccoboni (1707-1772) : Life, theatrical activity, and poetry of an actor-author in the Europe of the Enlightenment
François Antoine Valentin Riccoboni (1707-1772) exemplifies the intersection between Italian and French theatrical cultures in the 18th century in terms of staging practices, dramaturgy, poetics, and the theory of acting. Rooted in the Italian aesthetic, his acting aimed to achieve a style that was simpler and more natural and would be echoed in a number of ways in the reform of French stagecraft, contemporary criticism and the theory of acting. His work develops in alignment with the tradition of the Comédie Italienne in Paris, thus demonstrating the longevity of the process of poetic composition characteristic of the Italian artistic expertise. Dancer and ballet master, Riccoboni experiments with the possibilities of the ballet-pantomime at the juncture of influences from English dance, fairgrounds, and Italien pantomime. His Art du Théâtre (1750) proposes the transposition of his stage techniques in the areas of theory and aesthetics. A practical handbook designed for aspiring actors, it claims also to be a theory based solely on stage experience. It articulates, for the first time, a theory of acting based on the rational and imitative qualities of the actor, which will influence notably Diderot in Le Paradoxe. Divided in four parts, this doctoral dissertation retraces Riccoboni’s life (Part I); attempts to understand his stage craft in Italian all’improvviso, in French, in song and dance (Part II); analyzes his dramatic works (Part III); and studies his Art du Théâtre (Part IV). Two volumes of appendices offer previously unpublished archival sources as well as the annotated inventory and edition of previously unpublished texts by Riccoboni. Obraz «Veny-Vavilona» v romane “Hotel zum Türken” Konstantina Kuz’minskogo
This article examines Konstantin Konstantinovich Kuzminsky’s meta-novel Hotel zum Türken in the context of artistic and publishing strategies of the third wave of emigration. In particular, the analysis focuses on the image of “Vienna-Babylon” created by the author through experimentation with multilingualism. Drawing on textual evidences, this article shows how Kuzminsky independently continued (and strengthened) some general trends of the domestic underground of the 1960 and 1970s, such as the fascination with collage as a genre. On the other hand, Kuzminsky’s novel seems to tie in with the discourse about life of Russian emigrants abroad, initiated by a prominent representative of the “forgotten avant-garde” of the beginning of the twentieth century, namely Valentin Parnakh, in his memoirs Pension Maubert. Keywords: underground, third wave of emigration, Russian Vienna, Konstantin Kuzminsky, Valentin Parnakh
An unusual right atrial mass: Case report and review of the literature
An 80-year-old woman presented with dyspnoea. Laboratory test results and ECG were normal but echocardiography revealed a right atrial round mobile mass measuring about 20 mm. CT scan and cardiac MRI showed a mass appending on the right atrial free wall above the tricuspid annulus, enhanced by contrast, without any thoracic or abdominal extension, and confirmed the diagnosis of a tumour. After surgical treatment, the pathological examination revealed a cardiac papillary fibroelastoma. This small primary cardiac benign neoplasm usually occurs on cardiac valves, but can also appear, as described here, in a non-valvular localization. The diagnosis is, up to now, usually made by echocardiography, but CT and MR imaging could lead to a better description and analysis of this under-estimated tumour.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
Numerical study of tides in Ontario Lacus, a hydrocarbon lake on the surface of the Saturnian moon Titan
In the context of the emergence of extra-terrestrial oceanography, we adapted an existing oceanographic model, SLIM (www.climate.be/slim), to the conditions of Titan, a moon of Saturn. The tidal response of the largest southern lake at Titan's surface, namely Ontario Lacus, is simulated. SLIM solves the 2D, depth-averaged shallow water equations on an unstructured mesh using the discontinuous Galerkin finite element method, which allows for high spatial resolution wherever needed. The impact of the wind forcing, the bathymetry, and the bottom friction is also discussed. The predicted maximum tidal range is about 0.56 m in the southern part of the lake, which is more than twice as large as the previous estimates (Tokano, 2010). The patterns and magnitude of the current are also markedly different from those of previous studies: the tidal motion is not aligned with the major axis of the lake and the speed is larger nearshore. Indeed, the main tidal component rotates clockwise in an exact period of one Titan day and the tidal currents can reach 0.046 m/s close to the shores depending on the geometry and the bathymetry. Except for these specific nearshore regions, the current speed is less than 0.02 m/s. Circular patterns can be observed offshore, their rotational direction and size varying along the day
Petticoat Government
CATALOGUE - PETTICOAT GOVERNMENT PAVILLON BELGE - Giardini | Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles 60e Exposition Internationale d'Art – La Biennale di Venezia 20.04 – 24.11.2024 Commissaire: Le collectif : Sophie Boiron, Valentin Bollaert, Simona Denicolai, Pauline Fockedey, Pierre Huyghebaert, Antoinette Jattiot, Ivo Provoost For the 2024 Art Biennale in Venezia, the collective (Denicolai & Provoost, Antoinette Jattiot, Nord, Spec uloos) has developed a multidisciplinary scenario based on the participation of existing folkloric giants from different communities. Unlike a finished work, the project treats the Belgian Pavilion in Venezia as a point of transit, representing the journey so far and yet to come in kaleidoscopic perspective. The elevated staging of the giants and the accompanying sound installation create an ungrounded space, a terrain of freedom where emphasis on the oral and the co-construction of narratives invites reconsideration of both ancient tales and modern myths. Petticoat Government is a choral work, in movement, led by a collective and multidisciplinary body that incarnates the possibility of shared, joyful governance. The position of author is shared by seven members (Sophie Boiron, Valentin Bollaert, Simona Denicolai, Pauline Fockedey, Pierre Huyghebaert, Antoinette Jattiot and Ivo Provoost) who form a team, assisted and accompanied by many others. ──── Catalogue ┐ In the Pavilion’s copy shop in Venezia, the catalogue of Petticoat Government was printed on-demand from the website (https://petticoatgovernment.party). This printing practice aims to avoid unnecessary over-production and to give a physical dimension to the performative edition. The website is developed by http://variable.club and takes the side of a stubborn code ecology described in chapter 11 of the Digital Ethics publication (https://cloud.encc.eu/s/dXYWA7LN95dtDgn). This makes it possible to offer a wide and narrow screen (cell phone) web interface, on the one hand, and quality pdf outputs, on the other. This pdf serves to print the catalogue. The printed catalogue that you could buy in the Pavilion was packaged in a copy of the newspaper L'Petti Lion (download the full pdf on https://petticoatgovernment.party/i/gazzetta.pdf). In its current version, as printed on-demand, the catalogue consists of notes written by the Young Curators Storytellers and contributions from authors, researchers, anthropologists, socio-cultural facilitators and art critics: Jean-Baptiste Carobolante, Manah Depauw, Benoît Dusart, eli lebailly and Maximilien Atangana, l'art même (Christine Jamart), Silvia Mesturini, Alexis Zimmer. These invitations to authors from disciplines outside the field of art, strictly speaking, reflect the diversity of the project’s biotope. The content of the published version has been augmented throughout the presentation at the Biennale. From December on, the printed and packaged catalogue is available from MOREpublishers (https://morepublishers.be)
