No full textThis 1982 photograph shows Emma Taylor shaving down white oak splits to make weavers for a basket. Emma Squirrel Taylor (1920-2002) was a master basket weaver whose specialty was white oak baskets. She was raised in the Birdtown community on the Qualla Boundary, lands owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. She learned how to make baskets in 1927 and produced them for more than half a century. In 1952, Taylor joined Qualla Arts and Craft Mutual, a Cherokee artisan cooperative. Her work earned her recognition well beyond the Qualla Boundary in western North Carolina. An article about her appeared in the New York Times and she traveled to Japan to demonstrate Cherokee basket weaving to the World Craft Council. The name of the photographer who captured this shot is unknown

No full textThis four-page brochure was created by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, a division of the United States Department of Interior, to accompany a 1975 exhibition of "Basketry by Emma Taylor." The exhibitions were held at Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, an artisan cooperative in Cherokee, North Carolina. Emma Squirrel Taylor (1920-2002) was an accomplished basket maker who specialized in white oak baskets. The exhibition featured 16 white oak, 3 rivercane, and 3 honeysuckle baskets. A 1975 photograph of Taylor was included in the brochure. From 1969 through 1985, the Indian Arts and Crafts Board and Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, Inc. sponsored a series of exhibitions to promote Cherokee crafts. Taylor's exhibition also received support from the North Carolina Arts Council. The brochures for these exhibits were reformatted and republished as "Contemporary Artists and Craftsmen of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians" in 1987
